Test manager career path: from test lead to head of QA
Each step up from test lead, through test manager and senior test manager, to head of QA and, in large groups, VP of quality engineering: what changes in the job, the gap to close, how to show it on your CV and in interviews, and a realistic plan.

The ladder at a glance
| Step | What you are measured on next | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Test lead to test manager | The testing of a product or several teams, with its people and budget | 2 to 3 years |
| Test manager to senior test manager | A programme of releases, vendors and many teams | 3 or more years |
| Senior test manager to head of QA | Quality across the company, its testers and its tools | After leading a large programme |
| Head of QA to VP of quality engineering | Quality engineering as a function of a large group | Only in large groups |
The steps from junior tester up to test lead are on the test engineer career paths. The two ladders meet at test lead, so the first step below is on both pages, each with its own advice.
From test lead to senior test manager
Test lead to test manager
What changes: you stop answering for one release and start answering for how a product is tested, release after release. The test strategy is yours, so are the estimates, the tools budget and the testers' reviews, and senior people ask you whether a product is ready.
The gap: writing a test strategyAsked in 41% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know test design well enough to judge a plan, review test cases and see which risks nobody tests yet. others follow, estimates you can defend, line managementAsked in 3% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Lead testers: hire, coach, review work, share it out fairly and keep the team learning. with one-to-ones and reviews, a test automationAsked in 36% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Decide what to automate, at which level, and what it costs to keep; read the results like a dashboard. plan with its costs, and reports in plain wordsAsked in 18% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Say the state of quality in plain words, with the risk and the choice, not a page of test counts. for people who never read a test case.
On the CV and in interviews: the products and teams whose testing you planned, the testers you led, and a release decision you made under pressure. Expect a case: write a test strategy for a described product, and defend your estimate when it is cut.
Plan (9 to 12 months, on the job): write the test strategy for your product and have it agreed by product and development; take over one or two testers' reviews; build a monthly quality report with escaped defects and their causes; study the ISTQB Advanced Test Management syllabus if your market names it.
Test manager to senior test manager
What changes: you run testing for a programme: many teams, often several vendors, a fixed budget and a long plan. Your test managers or test leads report to you, and you sit with programme and delivery leadership when dates and scope are traded.
The gap: planning across teams and suppliers, vendor contracts and service levelsAsked in 3% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Agree scope, price and service levels with test vendors, and dates with project managers., budgets over a year, test environments and data shared by many teams, and stakeholdersAsked in 10% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Agree what good enough means with product, development, operations and the business before testing starts. at director level who want different things.
On the CV and in interviews: the size of the programme, its budget and teams, and a turnaround you led, such as a late vendor brought back on plan. Expect questions on the trade between scope, date and risk, and on a hard conversation with a supplier.
Plan (12 months or more): take on the testing of one large programme or two products at once; run a vendor review with service levels; own the environment and data plan for several teams; present the test status to programme leadership every month.
Head of QA and above
Senior test manager to head of QA
What changes: you own quality as a function across the company. You decide where testers sit and how many there are, which tools and vendors the company uses, and which standards every team follows. You report to the head of engineering or the CTO.
The gap: organisation design, a budget across departments, a quality strategy tied to business goals, audits and the quality systemAsked in 23% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Link testing to the quality system: reviews, audits, records and the changes made after a failure. in regulated work, and board-level reportingAsked in 2% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Show a release recommendation or a quality report to managers in a few slides they can decide on. on risk.
On the CV and in interviews: a change you led across many teams and its result, the size of the function and the budget you held. Expect a case: releases are slow and customers complain about defects; what do you do in your first ninety days?
Plan (12 months or more): lead one company-wide change, such as moving testers into delivery teams with a shared community; set two or three quality goals with engineering leadership; find a mentor who already runs a department.
Head of QA to VP of quality engineering
What changes: in large groups, several heads of QA or quality engineering report to you, across business units or countries. The work is strategy, budget and people at scale: what the group builds once and shares, and how quality is measured everywhere.
The gap: leading leaders, group-wide budgets and tool contracts, quality in mergers and new markets, the rules of several countries, and a seat in technology leadership.
On the CV and in interviews: a function you built or rebuilt, its scale, and results the business felt, such as fewer outages or faster releases. Expect a discussion of your operating model and how you would measure it in the first year.
Plan (several years): run quality for a second business unit or a country; lead a group-wide tool or vendor decision; present to the executive team each quarter. This step only exists in groups large enough to need it.
Your CV for the next step
A step up in test management shows on a CV as proof of a wider scope: more teams, more money, bigger decisions. Three rules:
- Keep your titles as they were. Show the bigger work in the lines under each job.
- Use the next level's words. A test manager role wants "test strategy", "line management", "estimates"; a senior role wants "programme", "vendors", "budget"; head of QA wants "organisation", "quality strategy", "board".
- One result per line. Escaped defects, release speed, money saved, people grown.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Line managementAsked in 3% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Lead testers: hire, coach, review work, share it out fairly and keep the team learning. | Led testers. | Line-managed 6 testers and 2 test leads; three promotions in 18 months, yearly reviews all on time. |
| Programme testing | Tested a large programme. | Ran testing for a 14-team core banking programme with 2 vendors; cut-over on the planned weekend, no rollback. |
| Quality strategyAsked in 23% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Link testing to the quality system: reviews, audits, records and the changes made after a failure. | Improved quality. | Set three company quality goals with the CTO; critical customer incidents fell from 9 to 3 a quarter. |
| Budget | Responsible for the test budget. | Held a test budget of 2.4 million euros; moved a fifth from vendor hours to automation without new hires. |
Key takeaways
- This ladder starts at test lead, where the test engineer ladder meets it, and only goes up.
- Test manager means owning how a product is tested; senior test manager means owning a programme.
- Head of QA owns quality as a function; VP of quality engineering exists only in large groups.
- Each step is won with proof of the wider scope, not with another tool learned.
- Write the proof in the next level's words, one result per line, under real jobs.
Frequently asked questions
- What comes after test manager?
- Senior test manager for a programme, then head of QA for the company, and in large groups VP of quality engineering.
- How do I go from test lead to test manager?
- Own a test strategy, estimates and the reviews of a few testers, and report quality to people outside testing. The steps before test lead are on the test engineer career paths.
- Do I need a certificate to move up?
- No law asks for one. Many European ads name the ISTQB Advanced Test Management level; proof of leading test work counts at least as much.
- Is head of QA the same as director of QA?
- Mostly yes: the title depends on the company. Both own quality across the company and report to engineering leadership.
- What should the CV show for head of QA?
- A change you led across many teams, the size of the function and its budget, and results the business noticed.
