What a test manager does

A test manager answers one question for the business: how sure are we that this release works? To answer it, the test manager writes the test strategy, plans the testing of each release, decides what is tested by hand and what by machine, and leads the testers, in-house or from a vendor. At the end comes the recommendation: ship, ship with known risks, or wait.

The work is part planning, part people and part judgement. A test manager spends less time testing and more time on estimates, test environments and test data, metrics, budgets and talks with product owners and developers. Titles vary: Test Manager, QA Manager, Test Lead, Quality Engineering Manager. The steps up to test lead are on the test engineer career paths; the steps from test lead to head of QA are in the career paths of this role.

The skills the ads ask for

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

16% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 5% are fully remote.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €51,000 to €57,284 a year
  • Mid-level: €54,400 to €74,200 a year
  • Senior: €69,509 to €92,498 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level runs from StepStone's starting figure to Gehalt.de's figure for three to six years of work; mid-level is StepStone's range; senior runs from Gehalt.de's figure for more than nine years to the top of Indeed's range. Stuttgart leads StepStone's city figures, Cologne and Munich lead Indeed's.

Titles and certificates: US ads more often say QA manager or quality engineering manager. The ASTQB, the US board of the ISTQB, runs the ISTQB exams in the US, but many US ads ask for years of leading test teams rather than for an exam.

Regulated work: software in US medical devices is tested under the design controls of the FDA, the US regulator, which ask for test records that trace back to each requirement.

United Kingdom

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: £52,500 to £77,500 a year
  • Mid-level: £61,250 to £98,500 a year
  • Senior: £79,625 to £118,125 a year

Total pay: ITJobsWatch gives advertised base pay only, and none of the sources separates bonuses.

Certificates: in the UK, BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, offers software testing certificates, ISTQB ones among them, and UK ads often say "ISTQB or equivalent".

How the work is bought: many UK test managers work on fixed programmes in government, banking and insurance, often hired by the day for the length of one programme.

Switzerland

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: CHF 105,530 to CHF 125,825 a year
  • Mid-level: CHF 105,530 to CHF 150,024 a year
  • Senior: CHF 125,825 to CHF 150,024 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives Swiss test managers bonuses of about CHF 5,000 to CHF 10,000 a year, from few salaries.

No Swiss source gives the test lead or head of QA level with enough salaries, so all three levels come from Indeed's test manager range: entry from its low end to its average, senior from its average to its top. Baden, Zollikofen and Aarau lead the city figures.

Sources: Indeed (Oct 2026), Indeed: lead tester (Feb 2026), Payscale (Mar 2025).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Certificates and sectors: the Swiss Testing Board runs the ISTQB exams in Switzerland. Banks and insurers employ many Swiss test managers and keep strict test records for FINMA, the Swiss financial regulator. Language needs depend on the region: German, French or Italian, and English in international teams.

India

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: ₹7.79 lakh to ₹20 lakh a year
  • Mid-level: ₹10 lakh to ₹30 lakh a year
  • Senior: ₹20.46 lakh to ₹30 lakh a year

Total pay: Payscale gives test managers in India bonuses of about ₹92,000 to ₹4.85 lakh a year.

Entry level is Payscale's software test lead and mid-level its test manager. Senior is the upper part of the test manager range; no source in India gives head of QA pay on its own.

Sources: Payscale: software test lead (Aug 2026), Payscale: test manager (Sep 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Certificates and work: the Indian Testing Board runs the ISTQB exams in India. Many test managers in India lead teams that test for head offices or clients abroad, so they plan hand-overs across time zones and report to people they rarely meet.

Certificates and standards

The ISTQB, the International Software Testing Qualifications Board, publishes the most widely used tester exams, run in each country by a national board. Its levels are Foundation, then Advanced, with a Test Management module for test managers, then Expert. Many ads in Europe name a level; others ask only for experience. No certificate is required by law to work as a test manager.

Two international frameworks describe the test process itself: the international standard ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 for test processes and test documentation, and TMMi, an international model for judging and improving how mature an organisation's testing is. Regulated industries often build their test process on one of them.

Your CV for a test manager job

A test manager CV is read twice: by hiring software, which looks for the words of the ad, and by a head of QA or delivery manager, who looks for releases you were accountable for and teams you led. Show both the words and the accountability.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as ads name it: "test strategy", "test management", "risk-based testing", "test automation strategy", "UAT", "defect management". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Put the size next to each claim: how many testers you led, how many teams or vendors, how often the product shipped.
  • Write a certificate as its body names it, and one you are preparing for as "in progress", such as "ISTQB Advanced Test Management, in progress".
  • Name the test tools you ran, not every tool you have seen: JiraAsked in 33% of test manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Run test and defect workflows in Jira and its test add-ons, and build reports a release meeting can use. with its test add-on, your automation stack, your pipeline.

Prove each skill

A management line proves itself with a scope, a decision and a result: fewer escaped defects, a shorter regression, a release on time, a vendor brought back on track, a tester promoted.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the test manager jobs in our job search (test manager, QA manager, test lead and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a test manager do?
Writes the test strategy, plans the testing of each release, leads the testers, reports quality in plain words and recommends whether a release is ready.
Is a test manager the same as a test lead?
Not quite. A test lead usually runs the testing of one team or release; a test manager answers for several teams, the strategy, the budget and the people.
Do I need an ISTQB certificate?
No law asks for one. Many ads in Europe name a level, often Advanced Test Management, while others ask only for experience of leading test work.
Which tools should a test manager know?
A test management tool such as Jira with a test add-on or TestRail, the team's automation stack at a high level, and the pipeline the tests run in.
What should a test manager CV show first?
The releases you were accountable for, the teams you led and two or three results with figures, such as fewer escaped defects or a shorter regression.
