What a scrum master does
A scrum master makes Scrum work for one team, sometimes two or three. In the words of the Scrum Guide, the short rule book of Scrum by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, the scrum master is accountable for the team's effectiveness. In practice that means running sprint planning, the daily scrum, the sprint review and the retrospective well, helping the product owner keep a clear product backlog, and removing impediments the team cannot remove alone.
The rest of the job is coaching: helping developers organise their own work, helping managers see what the team needs from them, and making problems visible early. Titles vary: Scrum Master, Agile Delivery Lead, Team Coach, and above it Agile Coach. The ladder runs up to head of agile transformation; see the career paths.
The skills the ads ask for

Germany
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: €47,900 to €66,400 a year
- Mid-level: €53,540 to €92,415 a year
- Senior: €69,200 to €95,077 a year
Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.
Entry level is StepStone's scrum master range and mid-level Indeed's. Senior runs from StepStone's figure for experienced scrum masters to the top of Indeed's agile coach range; StepStone puts experienced agile coaches at about €85,000. Stuttgart leads StepStone's city figures; Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich lead Indeed's.

Works council: in Germany, a tool that can be used to watch how staff perform, which can include boards, time tracking and team metrics, needs the agreement of the Betriebsrat, the German works council, under the German BetrVG. A scrum master who brings in a new tool or a new team measure checks this first with the employer.

- Entry level: $74,000 to $95,306 a year
- Mid-level: $79,319 to $167,716 a year
- Senior: $102,000 to $198,000 a year
Total pay: Payscale gives scrum masters bonuses of about $3,000 to $18,000 and profit sharing of about $1,000 to $17,000 a year; agile coaches report bonuses of about $4,000 to $28,000.
Entry level runs from the low end of Payscale's scrum master range to its figure for the first four years; mid-level is Indeed's scrum master range; senior is Payscale's agile coach range. Jersey City and Charlotte lead Indeed's city figures.

Certificates: Scrum Alliance, which awards the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), and Scrum.org, which awards the Professional Scrum Master (PSM), are both based in the US, and US ads often name one or the other. Ads for large programmes also name SAFe.
United Kingdom
Pay (Base salary)

- Senior: £65,000 to £82,000 a year

Contract work: many UK scrum masters work as contractors, paid by the day. For contractors in the UK, the IR35 rules decide whether a contract is taxed like a job, so UK ads often say whether a role is "inside" or "outside IR35".
Switzerland

- Senior: CHF 110,963 to CHF 147,026 a year
Total pay: the Swiss sources give base pay only; Lohncheck counts a 13th monthly salary in its figures.
Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's scrum master range to its average, mid-level is Lohncheck's range, and senior is Indeed's agile coach range. Indeed's Swiss figures rest on few salaries, so read them as a guide.

Methods: Swiss public bodies often run projects with HERMES, the Swiss federal project management method, which has its own agile way of working, so Swiss public sector ads may name it next to Scrum. Language needs depend on the region: German, French or Italian, and English in international teams.
India
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: ₹6.82 lakh to ₹9.41 lakh a year
- Mid-level: ₹9.93 lakh to ₹15.32 lakh a year
- Senior: ₹10 lakh to ₹40 lakh a year
Total pay: Payscale gives scrum masters in India bonuses of about ₹40,000 to ₹3.08 lakh a year, and agile coaches about ₹1.02 lakh to ₹6.61 lakh.

Distributed teams: many scrum masters in India run teams whose product owners and stakeholders sit abroad, so the events are planned across time zones and much of the team's talk is written rather than spoken.
Frameworks and certificates
No certificate is required to work as a scrum master, and the Scrum Guide does not ask for one. Many ads still name one. The two most widely named come from Scrum.org, which awards the Professional Scrum Master (PSM), and from Scrum Alliance, which awards the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM); they differ in format, as the PSM is an online exam and the CSM starts with a course.
SAFe, the Scaled Agile Framework, is a way to run many teams as one programme, with its own roles, such as the release train engineer, and its own certificates. Ads from large companies name it most. Other ways to scale exist, such as LeSS and Nexus; a team uses whichever fits its product.
Your CV for a scrum master job
A scrum master CV is read by hiring software, which looks for the words of the ad, and then by an agile coach or delivery lead, who looks for teams that got better while you were there. Write for both.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Use the words of the ad: "Scrum", "Kanban", "retrospectives", "impediments", "SAFe", "Jira", "stakeholder management". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say what kind of teams you served: how many, how big, building what, in which setting.
- Write a certificate exactly as its body names it, and one you are preparing for as "in progress", such as "PSM I, in progress".
- Skip long lists of ceremonies; every scrum master runs them. Show what changed because of how you ran them.
Prove each skill
A scrum master line proves itself with the team's change: delivery more predictable, waiting time shorter, fewer surprises in the review, a problem gone for good.
