What a product manager does
A product manager owns a product or a part of one. They find out which problems are worth solving, decide what to build first, and work with engineers and designers until it ships and works for users. They do not manage the engineers. They lead by being clear about the goal, the users and the reasons.
Job titles vary: Product Manager, Product Owner (often the same work inside one Scrum team), Technical Product Manager, Digital Product Manager. We count them as one role. The ladder goes up to senior and group product manager, head of product and CPO (chief product officer); see the career paths.
Product manager or product owner?
Product Owner is a role in ScrumAsked in 13% of product manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know the roles and meetings; a product owner in Scrum owns the backlog and accepts the work., not a job grade. The Scrum Guide makes it one person who is accountable for the value of the product and for the Product Backlog: its goal, its items and their order. Often the product manager is also the product owner of one team; in larger companies a product manager sets the direction and product owners run the backlogs of the teams.
The ads differ in weight. As a rule, a product owner ad asks most for Scrum, backlog refinement, user stories with acceptance criteria and daily work with one or two teams. A product manager ad asks more for discovery, strategy, the market, pricing and results for the business.
So do the CVs. For a product owner job, show the backlog you owned, how you ordered it, the sprint reviews you ran and what the team shipped, and a PSPO or CSPO certificate if the ads ask for one. For a product manager job, lead with the problems you chose, the roadmap and the results in numbers. Keep your real job titles either way.

Your CV for a product manager job
A product manager CV is read by two readers: the hiring software, which looks for the words of the ad, and a head of product, who looks for proof that what you shipped changed something for users and the business. Write for both.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the skills the way the ad names them: "product discovery", "roadmap", "stakeholder management", "Agile", "OKRs". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Put the core skills in a short line near the top: discovery and user researchAsked in 6% of product manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Work with designers on flows and research; test ideas with users before they are built., data analysisAsked in 6% of product manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Define metrics, read funnels and cohorts, and tell a real change from noise., AgileAsked in 7% of product manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Work in short cycles with a team: small releases, learning from each one, and a backlog that changes. and ScrumAsked in 13% of product manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know the roles and meetings; a product owner in Scrum owns the backlog and accepts the work., JiraAsked in 10% of product manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Write clear stories and acceptance criteria, keep the backlog tidy, and read a board to see risks., your domain (payments, B2B software, e-commerce).
- Add a Scrum or product certificate if the ads in your market ask for one, such as a Scrum certificateScrum certificates (CSM, PSM, or PSPO for product owners) are asked for by some employers, mostly corporate..
- Only list what you can talk about for ten minutes. Every word on the CV is a question in the interview.
Prove each skill
A skill in a list proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: the problem, what you decided and shipped, and one result in numbers, such as conversion, retention, revenue, cost or time saved.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Conducted user research. | Interviewed 30 customers and tested 3 prototypes; dropped one planned feature and built the one that lifted activation by 18%. |
| Data analysis | Data-driven product decisions. | Found the onboarding step where 40% of new users left; a redesign cut that drop by half. |
| Roadmap | Owned the product roadmap. | Set the roadmap for the payments area with 3 teams; shipped 2 quarters of goals on time and grew revenue 12%. |
| StakeholdersAsked in 14% of product manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Keep sales, support, legal and leadership informed and on side, and say no with reasons. | Stakeholder management. | Aligned sales, legal and support on a pricing change; launched in 6 weeks with no rise in churn. |
| Launch | Launched new features. | Launched self-service invoicing to 8,000 customers; support tickets on billing fell by a third. |
Never claim what you did not do. If you were one of several people, say what was yours: "I led the research", "I wrote the spec".
How we read our data
- The jobs: the product manager and product owner jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
- Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a product manager do?
- Decides what a team builds and why: finds the problems worth solving, sets priorities, works with engineering and design to ship, and measures whether it worked.
- Is a product owner the same as a product manager?
- Often close. Product owner is the Scrum role that owns one team's backlog; product manager usually covers more of the strategy, the market and the results. Many companies use the titles for the same job.
- Which skills matter most?
- Agile ways of working, stakeholder management and communication lead in the ads, then data analysis, user research and tools such as Jira.
- Do I need a technical background?
- Not always. Technical product manager roles ask for one; most others ask that you can work closely with engineers and understand trade-offs.
- What should a product manager CV show first?
- Two or three things you shipped, each with the problem and a result in numbers. Then a short skills line in the words of the ads.
