What a project manager does
A project manager is responsible for delivering a change that has a start, an end and a goal: a new system, a new product line, an office move, a merger of two teams. They agree what will be delivered, plan the work, find the people and the money, manage the risks, keep everyone informed, and close the project when the result is handed over.
The same job runs IT projects, such as a new system or a move to the cloud, and business projects, such as a new process, a reorganisation or a construction site. The methods and most of the skills are the same; what differs is the subject the project manager must understand. This guide covers both.
Job titles vary: Project Manager, Project Lead, IT Project Manager, Technical Project Manager, Projektleiter. We count them as one role. The ladder goes up to senior project manager, programme manager, PMO lead and head of delivery; see the career paths.

Your CV for a project manager job
A project manager CV is read by two readers: the hiring software, which looks for the words of the ad, and a hiring manager, who looks for proof that your projects were delivered: their size, the result, and how you handled what went wrong. Write for both.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the skills the way the ad names them: "project planning", "risk management", "budget responsibility", "stakeholder management", "agile", "PRINCE2". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Put the core skills in a short line near the top: project managementAsked in 79% of project manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Plan, run and close a project: scope, schedule, budget, risks, people and reporting., your methods such as AgileAsked in 7% of project manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Run work in short cycles with a team that plans, delivers and adjusts every few weeks. or PRINCE2Asked in 5% of project manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).A method and certificate for running projects in stages, common in the UK, Europe and the public sector., your tools such as JiraAsked in 6% of project manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Plan and track the team's work, read a board to spot risks, and report progress from it. or MS Project, your certificate, and the kind of projects you run (IT, construction, marketing, operations).
- Add the certificate the ads in your market ask for, such as PMPAsked in 2% of project manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The PMI's project management certificate; named in many ads in the US, India and at large companies., PRINCE2 or IPMA.
- Only list what you can talk about for ten minutes. Every word on the CV is a question in the interview.
Prove each skill
A skill in a list proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: the project, its size (budget, team, length), what you did, and the result, such as on time, under budget, or a benefit delivered.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Managed IT projects. | Led the move of 300 users to a new CRM; 9 months, budget of 1.2 million euros, live on the planned date. |
| Budget | Budget responsibility. | Ran a 2.5 million euro office move; finished 4% under budget, with no day of lost work. |
| Risk | Risk management. | Kept a weekly risk log with owners; spotted a supplier delay 6 weeks early and switched without moving go-live. |
| StakeholdersAsked in 11% of project manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Find everyone a project affects, agree what each needs, and keep them informed and on side. | Stakeholder management. | Reported monthly to a steering committee of 6 directors; scope changes agreed in one meeting each. |
| Agile | Agile project management. | Moved a 3-team project from yearly releases to releases every 2 weeks; customer complaints down a third. |
Never claim what you did not do. If you were one of several people, say what was yours: "I ran the plan", "I managed the supplier".
How we read our data
- The jobs: the project manager and project lead jobs in our job search, IT and business alike, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
- Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a project manager do?
- Delivers a change with a start, an end and a goal: agrees the scope, plans the work, manages the budget, risks and people, keeps everyone informed, and hands the result over.
- Is an IT project manager a different job?
- The methods are the same; an IT project manager also needs to understand systems, suppliers and the handover to IT operations. Many project managers work on both kinds of project.
- Which certificate should I get, PMP or PRINCE2?
- Look at the ads in your market: PMP is named more in the US, India and at global companies; PRINCE2 more in the UK, Europe and the public sector. A Scrum certificate helps for agile projects.
- What is the difference between a project manager and a product manager?
- A project ends when its result is delivered; a product manager looks after a product for as long as it lives and decides what it should become.
- What should a project manager CV show first?
- Two or three projects you led, each with its size and a result: on time, on budget, a benefit delivered. Then a short skills line in the words of the ads.
