What a backend developer does
A backend developer builds the part of a product that users never see. When someone places an order, the backend checks the stock, takes the payment, saves the order, and tells the warehouse. It does that correctly when two people order the last item at once, when the payment provider is slow, and when traffic is ten times the usual on a sale day.
The work is APIs (the doors other programs use to talk to the service), databases, background jobs, connections to other systems, and keeping all of it secure, observable and fast. Frontend and mobile developers are the backend's first customers.
Job titles vary: Backend Developer, Backend Engineer, Java Developer, Python Developer, API Developer, Server-side Developer. We count them as one role. The ladder goes up to senior, staff and principal engineer, lead backend developer and software architect; see the career paths.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.
| Skill | Share of ads | What is expected |
|---|---|---|
| Java | 36% | The most common backend language in large companies: the JVM, collections, threads and memory. |
| Python | 31% | Services and APIs with Django or FastAPI, background jobs and scripts; typing helps large codebases. |
| SQL | 31% | Joins, indexes, query plans and transactions; reading why a query is slow and fixing it. |
| REST APIs | 34% | Design clear resources, status codes, pagination, versioning and error messages. |
| Docker | 24% | Package a service and its dependencies so it runs the same in testing and production. |
| Spring | 20% | Spring Boot for services: dependency injection, data access, security and configuration. |
| Microservices | 29% | Small services that deploy on their own; know when they help and what they cost. |
| PostgreSQL | 36% | The most asked-for open-source database: indexes, locks, migrations and backups. |
| AWS | 28% | The common services of AWS: compute, managed databases, queues, storage and permissions. |
| Kubernetes | 12% | Run services on a cluster: deployments, health checks, scaling and configuration. |
| Node.js | 4% | JavaScript or TypeScript on the server; good at many small requests, weaker at heavy computing. |
| Kafka | 2% | A log of events that many services read in order; for high volumes and replay. |
| English | 40% | The working language of most backend teams and of all the tools' documentation. |

Your CV for a backend developer job
A backend CV is read by the hiring software, which looks for the language, framework and database of the ad, and by a senior engineer, who looks for systems you built and ran: how much traffic, how reliable, and what you changed when something went wrong.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the stack as the ad writes it: "Java 21", "Spring Boot", "PostgreSQL", "Kafka", "AWS", "Kubernetes". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Put a short skills line near the top: your main language such as JavaAsked in 36% of backend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The most common backend language in large companies: the JVM, collections, threads and memory. or PythonAsked in 31% of backend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Services and APIs with Django or FastAPI, background jobs and scripts; typing helps large codebases., its framework, your databases with SQLAsked in 31% of backend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Joins, indexes, query plans and transactions; reading why a query is slow and fixing it., your messaging tool, and your cloud.
- Name the practices if you have done them: API design, automated tests, monitoring, on-call. Interviewers ask about each.
- Keep languages you used once for a weekend off the list; each word on the CV can become a question.
Prove each skill
"Developed microservices" proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: the service, its load, and one result in numbers: response time, error rate, cost, uptime, or time saved for the teams that use it.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Java and SpringAsked in 20% of backend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Spring Boot for services: dependency injection, data access, security and configuration. | Java backend development. | Built the order service in Java and Spring Boot; handles 900 orders a minute on sale days with errors under 0.1%. |
| SQL | Good database skills. | Added two indexes and rewrote the report query; p95 response of the account API down from 1.8 s to 140 ms. |
| KafkaAsked in 2% of backend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).A log of events that many services read in order; for high volumes and replay. | Experience with event-driven systems. | Moved stock updates from nightly files to Kafka events; shop stock now correct within seconds. |
| Reliability | Ensured high availability. | Added timeouts, retries and a circuit breaker to the payment calls; failed checkouts during provider outages down 70%. |
| AWSAsked in 28% of backend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The common services of AWS: compute, managed databases, queues, storage and permissions. | Cloud experience. | Moved 8 services to managed databases on AWS with Terraform; hosting cost down 25%. |
Never claim what you did not do. If you were one of several engineers, say which part was yours: "I designed the API", "I led the database migration".
How we read our data
- The jobs: the backend developer jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
- Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a backend developer do?
- Builds and runs the services behind an app: the APIs, business rules, databases and connections to other systems, so they stay correct, secure and fast under load.
- Which language should I learn for backend jobs?
- Java is asked for most at large companies, Python at product companies; C#, Go and Node.js follow. Learn one well, with SQL.
- Do I need to know Kubernetes?
- Often not in depth. Know Docker, how your service is deployed and monitored, and what a health check is; platform teams run the cluster.
- Do I need a computer science degree?
- It helps with data structures and concurrency questions, but many backend developers come from other studies. Services you built and ran count for more.
- What should a backend CV show first?
- Two or three services you built or improved, with their load and one result in numbers, then a short stack line in the words of the ads.
