What a mobile developer does
A mobile developer turns a design and a backend into an app that opens in a second, works on a weak signal and survives a phone call in the middle of a payment. The work covers the screens, the data kept on the phone, the calls to the server, notifications, and the release through Apple's App Store and Google Play.
Most teams split by platform: iOS developers write SwiftThe language of modern iOS: value types, async and await, and SwiftUI or UIKit for the screens. with SwiftUI or UIKit, Android developers write KotlinThe language of modern Android: coroutines for background work, null safety, and Jetpack Compose for the screens. with Jetpack Compose. Other teams build both apps from one code base with Flutter or React NativeReact Native builds iOS and Android apps from one JavaScript or TypeScript code base; know where it needs native code.. Titles vary: Mobile Developer, iOS Developer, Android Developer, Mobile Engineer. The steps from junior to head of mobile are in the career paths of this role.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.
| Skill | What is expected |
|---|---|
| Swift | The language of modern iOS: value types, async and await, and SwiftUI or UIKit for the screens. |
| Kotlin | The language of modern Android: coroutines for background work, null safety, and Jetpack Compose for the screens. |
| Git | Branches, reviews and release tags; one history for both platforms and their release branches. |
| Agile | Ship in small steps with product and design, and plan around store review times. |
| REST APIs | Call the backend well: timeouts, retries, paging, caching and errors a person can understand. |
| Java | Still found in older Android code; read it well enough to maintain it and move parts to Kotlin. |
| CI/CD | Every change built, tested and signed by the pipeline; store uploads and test builds without manual steps. |
| Unit Testing | Tests for view models, parsing and business logic that run in seconds on every change. |
| Scrum | Work in sprints with a team that often has separate iOS and Android developers on one backlog. |
| TypeScript | The usual language of React Native teams; typed props, state and API calls keep a shared code base safe. |
| React | React Native builds iOS and Android apps from one JavaScript or TypeScript code base; know where it needs native code. |
| UX Design | Know the platform conventions of iOS and Android, so the app feels at home on each. |
| Figma | Read the designs, their spacing and states, and talk to designers before a screen is built. |
| English | The working language of most app teams, of the platform documentation and of both stores' rules. |
| German | Asked for in many ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, often for work with business teams and clients. |
Mobile ads ask for three groups of skills. Accessibility law: since June 2025 the German Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG), the German law that puts the EU's European Accessibility Act into force, covers many consumer apps, such as banking and shopping apps, so accessible screens are now a legal duty for them in Germany.

Children and privacy: apps for children in the US fall under COPPA, the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, which asks for parents' consent before personal data of children under thirteen is collected. California adds its own privacy law, the CCPA, for US users there.
How the work is offered: US ads name full-time employment most often, with contract roles for single app projects; agencies that build apps for clients hire developers for both.

Data protection and scale: India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP) sets the rules for consent and personal data in apps for users in India. Many Indian apps serve users on low-cost Android phones and slow networks, so app size and offline work matter there.
The two stores and their rules
Every public app passes a review before it reaches users. Apple publishes the App Store Review Guidelines, and Google Play publishes its Developer Program Policies; both cover privacy, payments inside the app, content, and what an app may do on the phone, and both change several times a year. A mobile developer reads both sets of rules for the platforms the team ships on.
In the EU, the Digital Markets Act lets apps on iPhones also be offered outside Apple's store, under conditions Apple sets for the EU. No certificate is needed to publish an app; each store asks for a developer account and a review of every new version.
Your CV for a mobile developer job
A mobile CV is read twice: by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, and by a lead developer who looks for apps that real people use. Give them both: the keywords, and the apps with their size and results.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the platform and the stack as the ad does: "iOS", "Swift", "SwiftUI", "Android", "Kotlin", "Jetpack Compose", "Flutter", "React Native". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Link the apps you built in the stores, and say what part was yours: the payment flow, the offline mode, the release pipeline.
- List a course or certificate you are still working on as "in progress", with the month you expect to finish it.
- Show quality with the figures stores and crash tools give you: rating, crash-free sessions, start time, app size.
Prove each skill
An app line proves itself with a feature, a figure and what users felt: faster start, fewer crashes, a better rating, a release cycle cut from weeks to days.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Swift and SwiftUIThe language of modern iOS: value types, async and await, and SwiftUI or UIKit for the screens. | Developed iOS features in Swift. | Rebuilt the checkout of a retail iOS app in SwiftUI; checkout drop-outs fell by a fifth in two months. |
| KotlinThe language of modern Android: coroutines for background work, null safety, and Jetpack Compose for the screens. | Worked on the Android app. | Moved the Android order history to Kotlin and Compose; the screen opens twice as fast on low-end phones. |
| Crash reduction | Fixed bugs and crashes. | Took crash-free sessions from 97.1 to 99.6 percent by fixing the top 15 crash groups in one quarter. |
| Release pipelineEvery change built, tested and signed by the pipeline; store uploads and test builds without manual steps. | Set up CI/CD. | Automated signing and store uploads for both apps; a release went from two days of manual work to one hour. |
| Offline mode | Implemented offline functionality. | Built offline drafts with sync for a field-service app used by 400 technicians; no lost work orders since. |
Keep each line to work you did yourself. If a whole team shipped the app, say which part you built and which decision you took.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the mobile developer jobs in our job search (mobile, iOS, Android and app developer and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a mobile developer do?
- Builds and maintains apps for iOS, Android or both: the screens, the data on the phone, the calls to the server, and each release through the app stores.
- Should I learn iOS, Android or a cross-platform tool?
- Read the ads where you want to work. Many teams hire for one platform in Swift or Kotlin; others use Flutter or React Native for both. Knowing one platform deeply helps with either path.
- Do I need a certificate to publish apps?
- No. Each store asks for a developer account and reviews every new version against its own rules.
- Which tools should a mobile developer know?
- Xcode for iOS, Android Studio for Android, Git, a crash reporting tool, and the build pipeline that signs and uploads the app.
- What should a mobile developer CV show first?
- The apps you worked on with links to them, the part you built, and figures such as crash-free sessions, start time or ratings.
