What a full-stack developer does

A full-stack developer takes a feature from idea to production on their own: the form the user fills in, the API that receives it, the database table that keeps it, the email that confirms it, and the release. Nobody waits for another team to finish their half.

Few people are equally deep on every layer, and ads know it. Most full-stack developers lean to one side and are good enough on the other to ship without help. Small companies and start-ups hire them most, because one person can move a whole feature; larger companies use them in product teams that own a part of the product end to end.

Job titles vary: Full Stack Developer, Fullstack Engineer, Software Engineer (Full Stack), Web Developer, sometimes a stack in the title such as "MERN developer" (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js). We count them as one role. The ladder goes up to senior and lead full-stack developer, solutions architect, engineering manager and head of engineering; see the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Your CV for a full-stack developer job

A full-stack CV must answer one question quickly: can this person ship a feature on their own? The hiring software looks for the stack words of the ad; the engineer reading after it looks for features you took from the screen to the database and into production.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the stack as the ad does, both halves: "React and Node.js", "Angular and Spring Boot", "Vue and Laravel". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Put a skills line near the top in two parts, frontend and backend, plus the database and the cloud: TypeScriptAsked in 46% of full-stack developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).One type system from the database query to the screen, so a changed field shows everywhere., ReactAsked in 38% of full-stack developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The most common frontend in full-stack ads: components, state, data loading and forms., Node.jsAsked in 13% of full-stack developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).JavaScript on the server: APIs, background jobs and server rendering, in the same language as the UI., PostgreSQLAsked in 29% of full-stack developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The usual database of new full-stack products: tables, indexes, JSON fields and migrations., DockerAsked in 29% of full-stack developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Run the whole app, database included, the same way on every laptop and in production., AWSAsked in 11% of full-stack developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Deploy and run the app: compute, a managed database, file storage and a CDN..
  • Say honestly which side you lean to. "Backend-leaning full-stack developer" is a fair line, and interviewers respect it.
  • Link a product you built and deployed yourself, small is fine, with sign-in and a database.

Prove each skill

"Full-stack development with modern technologies" proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: a feature you built across the layers, and what it did for users or the business.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
End to endFull-stack development.Built team invitations end to end, from the React form to the Node.js API, PostgreSQL and email; 22% of new accounts now invite a colleague.
React and Node.jsExperience with React and Node.js.Built the booking flow in React with a Node.js API in TypeScript; bookings per visit up 15%.
SQLAsked in 21% of full-stack developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Design tables, write joins, read a query plan, and change a schema without losing data.Database design.Designed the schema for subscriptions and wrote safe migrations; 2 years without a data fix by hand.
DeploymentDeployed applications to the cloud.Set up Docker builds and preview deploys for every pull request on AWS; releases from weekly to several a day.
OwnershipWorked in a start-up.Only engineer for the first 9 months; built and ran the product that signed the first 40 paying customers.

Never claim what you did not do. If you built the frontend and a colleague the API, say so; "full-stack" on a CV is tested in the interview.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the full-stack developer jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a full-stack developer do?
Builds whole features: the screen, the API, the database and the release, so one person or one small team can ship without waiting for others.
Which stack should I learn?
TypeScript with React and Node.js is asked for most. If the jobs near you are at large companies, React or Angular with Java and Spring is the safer pair.
Do I have to be an expert on every layer?
No. Most full-stack developers lean to one side. Be able to ship on both, and be honest about which is deeper.
Is full-stack a good first job?
Yes, especially at small companies, where you learn the whole product quickly. Guard against knowing a little of everything and nothing well.
What should a full-stack CV show first?
Two or three features you built from screen to database to production, each with a result, then a skills line split into frontend, backend, database and cloud.
