What a frontend developer does

A frontend developer turns a design into screens that work: in every browser, on a phone and a large monitor, with a keyboard or a screen reader, on a fast connection and a slow one. They connect the screens to the backend's APIs, handle what happens while data loads or fails, and keep the page fast as the product grows.

The work sits between design and backend. A good frontend developer asks the designer what happens when a name is very long or a list is empty, and asks the backend developer for the data in a shape the screen can use.

Job titles vary: Frontend Developer, Frontend Engineer, UI Developer, React Developer, Angular Developer, Web Developer. We count them as one role. The ladder goes up to senior, lead and staff frontend engineer, frontend architect and engineering manager; see the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

SkillShare of adsWhat is expected
JavaScript54%The language of the browser: closures, promises, the event loop, and reading a stack trace calmly.
TypeScript48%Types for props, API responses and state, so mistakes show in the editor before they reach users.
React37%Components, hooks, state and effects; knowing why a component renders, and how to stop it rendering too often.
HTML/CSS59%Semantic HTML, Flexbox and Grid, responsive layouts, and CSS that a team can still change next year.
Angular41%Common at banks, insurers and large companies: modules, services, RxJS streams and strict structure.
Vue.js24%A lighter framework popular with agencies and smaller product teams; components and reactive state.
Git35%Small branches, clear commits and reviews; resolving a merge conflict without losing work.
REST APIs33%Call APIs well: loading and error states, retries, caching, and agreeing the response shape with backend.
Unit Testing11%Test components by what the user sees and does, not by their inner workings.
CI/CD25%Every change is built, tested and previewed automatically, so a release is boring.
English43%The working language of most frontend teams, of documentation and of the frameworks themselves.

Your CV for a frontend developer job

A frontend CV is read by the hiring software, which looks for the framework and language words of the ad, and by a senior engineer, who looks for screens you shipped and what got better for users. A link to work they can open helps more than in most roles.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Write the framework the way the ad does: "React", "Next.js", "Angular", "Vue.js", "TypeScript". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Put a short skills line near the top: TypeScriptAsked in 48% of frontend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Types for props, API responses and state, so mistakes show in the editor before they reach users., your framework such as ReactAsked in 37% of frontend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Components, hooks, state and effects; knowing why a component renders, and how to stop it rendering too often., HTML and CSSAsked in 59% of frontend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Semantic HTML, Flexbox and Grid, responsive layouts, and CSS that a team can still change next year., your test tools, and FigmaRead a design file: spacing, tokens, states and variants, and spot what the design forgot. if you work from designs.
  • Name accessibility (WCAG, the web's accessibility guidelines) and performance (Core Web Vitals, Google's page speed measures) if you have done the work; interviewers ask about both.
  • Add a link to a live project or a public repository, and make sure it works on a phone.

Prove each skill

"Built responsive UIs" proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: what you built, for how many users or pages, and what changed: faster loading, fewer errors, more sign-ups, or less time for other teams to build a screen.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
ReactDeveloped React applications.Rebuilt the checkout in React with TypeScript; abandoned checkouts down 18% in the first quarter.
PerformanceOptimised website performance.Split the product page bundle and lazy-loaded images; largest content shown in 1.9 s instead of 4.2 s on mobile.
AccessibilityKnowledge of accessibility.Fixed keyboard and screen reader issues across 40 screens; passed an external WCAG 2.1 AA audit.
AngularAsked in 41% of frontend developer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Common at banks, insurers and large companies: modules, services, RxJS streams and strict structure.Worked with Angular.Moved the claims portal from AngularJS to Angular in 4 releases without a feature freeze.
Design systemCreated reusable components.Built 35 shared components with designers in Figma; new screens built in days instead of weeks.

Never claim what you did not do. If a team built it, say which part was yours: "I built the form components", "I led the move to TypeScript".

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the frontend developer jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a frontend developer do?
Builds the screens of a website or web app in the browser, from a design, connected to the backend's APIs, and makes them fast, accessible and reliable on every device.
Which framework should I learn first?
React is asked for most. Angular is strong at banks and large companies, Vue at agencies. Learn one in depth; the second takes weeks, not months.
Is TypeScript required now?
In most new projects, yes. Many ads name it, and teams that use React or Angular at scale almost all use it.
Do I need a computer science degree?
No. Many frontend developers come from design, bootcamps or self-study. Shipped work you can show counts for more.
What should a frontend CV show first?
Two or three things you shipped, each with a result for users, a link to live work, and a short skills line in the words of the ads.
