What a BI developer does

A BI developer, short for business intelligence developer, turns the data in a warehouse into reports and dashboards people use to run the business: sales by region, stock levels, hours worked, cash. The work is the requirement behind the report, the data model under it, the measures that calculate each figure, the refresh that keeps it current, the access rules, and the dashboard on top.

The role sits next to the data analyst. Analysts answer questions with data, often once; BI developers build what answers the same questions every day, for many people, in a way that is fast and correct. Many people move between the two; the analyst's page is the data analyst page, and the steps above the BI role are in the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

SkillWhat is expected
Power BIData models, measures, row-level security, refresh and sharing; knowing why a report is slow. depends on the provider
SQLWrite and tune the queries behind reports, and read the warehouse's tables without help.
Data WarehouseKnow the layers and tables reports read from, and ask the engineers for the right changes.
ETLHow data reaches the warehouse and when; where a transformation belongs and who maintains it.
ExcelStill where many users live: connect it to the shared model instead of copying data into it.
Data ModellingStar schemas with clear facts and dimensions, at a stated grain, that many reports can share.
Data VisualizationCharts that answer one question each, readable in seconds, honest about scale and gaps.
TableauData sources, calculated fields, dashboards and their performance, and publishing for others. depends on the provider
AzureWhere many Power BI setups get their data: storage, databases and identity for access. depends on the provider
SAPMany companies report from SAP; know its main modules and how its data reaches the warehouse. depends on the provider
PythonUseful for data checks and the odd preparation step the BI tool does poorly.
LookerA semantic layer of shared definitions and the dashboards built on it, often next to BigQuery. depends on the provider
QlikData loads, the associative model and apps that let users explore, with sections for access. depends on the provider
EnglishThe working language of the tools' documentation and of many international data teams.
GermanAsked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where BI developers work with departments.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €42,000 to €52,000 a year
  • Mid-level: €48,000 to €66,800 a year
  • Senior: €56,400 to €71,000 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives BI developers in Germany bonuses of about €2,000 to €4,000 a year.

Entry level is the starting range StepStone gives for graduates; mid-level is StepStone's range for BI developers; senior runs from StepStone's middle figure to the upper tenth of Payscale's range, which rests on few salaries.

Sources: StepStone (2026), Payscale: BI developer (Nov 2025).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Titles and language: German ads say BI-Entwickler, BI Developer or Business Intelligence Entwickler, and most ask for GermanAsked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where BI developers work with departments. next to EnglishThe working language of the tools' documentation and of many international data teams..

Works council: in Germany a company's works council, the Betriebsrat, has a say before reports that could monitor employees' performance are introduced, so HR and sales dashboards often wait for its agreement.

United States

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: $67,000 to $91,420 a year
  • Mid-level: $91,420 to $109,606 a year
  • Senior: $109,606 to $153,754 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives BI developers bonuses of about $2,000 to $15,000 and profit sharing of about $1,000 to $10,000 a year.

Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's BI developer range to its average; mid-level from there to the average Indeed gives from job ads; senior from that average to the top of Indeed's range.

Sources: Indeed (Oct 2026), Payscale: BI developer (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Financial reporting: at US-listed companies, reports that feed the financial statements fall under the internal controls of the US Sarbanes-Oxley Act, SOX, so changes to them are tested, approved and logged.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment; contract roles are common for migrations between BI tools.

United Kingdom

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: £31,552 to £37,500 a year
  • Mid-level: £42,500 to £65,000 a year
  • Senior: £65,000 to £81,500 a year

Total pay: the UK sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's range to the lower tenth of the pay ITJobsWatch gives for business intelligence developer jobs over six months; mid-level is the middle half of that range; senior runs from its upper quarter to its top tenth.

Sources: ITJobsWatch: business intelligence developer (Oct 2026), Indeed (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Personal data in reports: the ICO, the UK's information regulator, enforces the UK GDPR, which follows the EU's rules, so UK reports that show people's data limit who can see which rows.

Switzerland

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: CHF 62,000 to CHF 99,010 a year
  • Mid-level: CHF 88,083 to CHF 110,001 a year
  • Senior: CHF 99,425 to CHF 137,372 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives BI developers in Switzerland bonuses of up to about CHF 10,000 a year.

Both Swiss sources rest on few salaries, Indeed's on very few, so treat these as a guide: entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's range to its figure for one to four years, mid-level is the lower half of Indeed's range, and senior runs from Payscale's average to the top of Indeed's range.

Sources: Indeed (Sep 2026), Payscale: BI developer (Jul 2025).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Data protection: Switzerland's data protection act, the FADP, applies to reports that show people's data, so Swiss BI teams record what personal data each report uses.

India

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: ₹3.89 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh a year
  • Mid-level: ₹4.98 lakh to ₹8.76 lakh a year
  • Senior: ₹8.76 lakh to ₹15.42 lakh a year

Total pay: Payscale gives BI developers in India bonuses of about ₹10,000 to ₹2.05 lakh a year.

Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's BI developer range to its average; mid-level from the low end of Indeed's range to its average; senior from the average to the top. Indeed's figures rest on few salaries, and Payscale's upper tenth reaches about ₹20 lakh.

Sources: Payscale: BI developer (Aug 2026), Indeed (Sep 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Data protection: India's DPDP Act of 2023 sets duties for personal data, which reaches customer and HR dashboards in India as its rules come into force.

Tools, licences and rules

Power BI, Tableau, Looker and Qlik each have a desktop or web designer, a server or cloud service to share reports, and their own way to license users. Power BI often comes with the Microsoft setup a company already has, increasingly inside Microsoft Fabric; Looker sits close to Google Cloud and BigQuery; Tableau and Qlik run with many sources. The vendors offer certificates; a few ads name one, most ask for reports you built.

Reports often show personal data, such as names in a sales or HR dashboard. In the EU the GDPR applies to them: show only the people a viewer needs to see, and keep exports under control. Reports that feed financial statements may fall under internal control rules. Each country section below names its own rules; this page is general information, not legal advice.

Your CV for a BI developer job

A BI CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a BI lead who wants to know which reports you built, who used them, and whether the figures were right and fast. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the tools and methods as the ad does: "Power BI", "Tableau", "SQL", "data model", "star schema", "DAX", "row-level security". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say who used your work: departments, number of users, the decisions it supported.
  • Write a certification or course you are working towards as "in progress" with the planned month, next to the reports that use the skill.
  • Name the business areas you know, such as sales, finance or supply chain, because BI ads often ask for one.

Prove each skill

A BI line proves itself with use and trust: reports people open every day, figures that stopped being argued about, refreshes that became faster.

Power BIData models, measures, row-level security, refresh and sharing; knowing why a report is slow. depends on the providerCreated Power BI reports.Built the sales model and twelve reports in Power BI used by 300 people each morning; the monthly reporting pack was retired.
Data modelStar schemas with clear facts and dimensions, at a stated grain, that many reports can share.Worked on data models.Rebuilt a tangle of joined tables into one star schema; the slowest page now opens in two seconds instead of thirty.
SQLWrite and tune the queries behind reports, and read the warehouse's tables without help.Good SQL skills.Wrote and tuned the SQL views behind the finance reports; the nightly load finishes before the first user logs in.
Row-level securityHandled report access.Set up row-level security so each region sees only its own customers; one report replaced eleven copies.
TableauData sources, calculated fields, dashboards and their performance, and publishing for others. depends on the provider migrationTook part in a tool change.Moved 40 Tableau dashboards to the new BI tool with figures checked side by side; no report went dark during the switch.

Write only what you built yourself. If a team built it, say which part was yours: the model, the measures, the security, the dashboard.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the BI developer jobs in our job search (BI developer, business intelligence developer and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a BI developer do?
Builds the data models, measures, reports and dashboards a company runs on, with refreshes and access rules, so people see the same correct figures.
How is a BI developer different from a data analyst?
An analyst answers questions with data, often one at a time; a BI developer builds what answers the same questions every day for many people. Many move between the two.
Which BI tool should I learn?
The one the jobs you want name. Models, measures and clear pages carry over between Power BI, Tableau, Looker and Qlik.
Do I need a certification?
No law asks for one. Some ads name a vendor certificate; most ask for reports you built and who used them.
What should a BI CV show first?
The tools, the reports and models you built, who used them, and what became faster or more trusted.
