What a business analyst does

A business analyst stands between the people who run the business and the people who build or change its systems. They find out what the problem really is, map how the work is done today, agree what must change, and write it down so clearly that a team can build it and test it. Then they check that what was built solves the problem.

Job titles vary: Business Analyst, IT Business Analyst, Requirements Engineer, Process Analyst, Functional Analyst, Systems Analyst. We count them as one role. The ladder goes up to senior and lead business analyst, business architect and head of business analysis; see the career paths.

Your CV for a business analyst job

A business analyst CV is read by two readers: the hiring software, which looks for the words of the ad, and a hiring manager, who looks for proof that your analysis changed something: a better process, a system that was used, money or time saved. Write for both.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the skills the way the ad names them: "requirements engineering", "process modelling", "BPMN", "user stories", "stakeholder management". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Put the core skills in a short line near the top: stakeholder managementAsked in 16% of business analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Find everyone a change affects, learn what each needs, and keep them informed and on side., requirements and process modelling, AgileAsked in 12% of business analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Work in short cycles with a team: requirements written as stories, refined and accepted sprint by sprint., JiraAsked in 18% of business analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Write clear stories with acceptance criteria and keep the backlog tidy; Confluence for the documents., SQLAsked in 25% of business analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Answer your own questions from the data: joins, filters and counts, without waiting for a developer., and the business system and sector you know.
  • Add a certificate if the ads in your market ask for one, such as IIBA's CBAP or the IREB's CPRE, a requirements engineering certificate common in Germany and Switzerland.
  • Only list what you can talk about for ten minutes. Every word on the CV is a question in the interview.

Prove each skill

A skill in a list proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: the problem, what you analysed and agreed, and one result in numbers, such as time saved, errors cut, cost reduced, or adoption.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
RequirementsGathered requirements.Ran 8 workshops with claims staff and wrote 60 user stories; the new claims screen went live with 2 change requests instead of the usual 20.
ProcessProcess mapping.Mapped the order-to-cash process in BPMN and removed 3 handovers; invoices go out 4 days sooner.
SQLData analysis skills.Sized the problem with SQL on 2 years of orders; showed one region caused half the returns.
StakeholdersStakeholder management.Agreed scope with finance, sales and IT for a pricing change; signed off in 3 weeks instead of 3 months.
TestingSupported UAT.Planned user acceptance tests with 12 users; 95% of cases passed before go-live, no rollback.

Never claim what you did not do. If you were one of several people, say what was yours: "I ran the workshops", "I wrote the requirements".

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the business analyst jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a business analyst do?
Finds out what a business needs, maps how the work is done, writes clear requirements for the team that builds the change, and checks that the result solves the problem.
Is a business analyst the same as a data analyst?
No. A data analyst answers questions with data; a business analyst changes processes and systems, and uses data as one source of evidence.
Which skills matter most?
Stakeholder management and communication lead in the ads, then agile ways of working, requirements tools such as Jira, and data skills such as SQL and Excel.
Do I need a technical background?
Not always. IT business analyst roles ask that you understand systems and data; many analysts come from the business side of their sector.
What should a business analyst CV show first?
Two or three changes you analysed, each with the problem and a result in numbers. Then a short skills line in the words of the ads.
