What a data architect does

A data architect designs the data landscape of a company: which data exists, what each field means, where it is kept, how it moves from the systems that create it to the people who use it, who owns it, and how long it stays. The result is a set of models, standards and decisions that engineers build and analysts rely on, written down so they outlast the people who made them.

The title covers several jobs. In one company the data architect designs the warehouse and its models; in another the whole platform, with its lake, streams and catalogue; in a third the rules for master data across many systems. Ads also say Data Platform Architect, Data Warehouse Architect or Enterprise Data Architect. Most data architects come from data engineering or database work, and the steps above the role are in the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €59,778 to €81,058 a year
  • Mid-level: €80,000 to €87,498 a year
  • Senior: €87,498 to €111,000 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives data architects in Germany bonuses of about €5,000 to €10,000 and profit sharing of up to €4,000 a year.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's data architect range to its average; mid-level from Payscale's figure for five to nine years of work to its average; senior from that average to the upper tenth of Payscale's range. Payscale's figures rest on few salaries; Frankfurt and Munich lead Indeed's city figures.

Sources: Indeed (Oct 2026), Payscale: data architect (Apr 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Titles and language: German ads say Data Architect or Datenarchitekt, sometimes Data Warehouse Architekt, and most ask for GermanAsked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where architects work with business departments. next to EnglishThe working language of the platforms' documentation and of most international data teams..

Data protection: in Germany the BDSG, the German federal data protection act, adds rules to the EU's GDPR, for example on employee data, so architects there plan who may see which personal fields.

United States

4% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 51% are fully remote.

100% of the ads that say are full-time.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: $97,792 to $136,651 a year
  • Mid-level: $136,651 to $158,376 a year
  • Senior: $158,376 to $210,555 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives data architects bonuses of about $2,000 to $29,000 and profit sharing of about $3,000 to $23,000 a year; Built In gives about $42,000 of extra cash on average.

Sources: Indeed (Oct 2026), Payscale: data architect (Sep 2026), Built In (2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

State privacy laws: the US has no single federal privacy law; California's CCPA, as amended by the CPRA, and the laws of other US states set rights to see and delete personal data, which a data platform must be able to answer.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment; contract roles exist for migrations and platform builds.

  • Senior: £89,999 to £110,000 a year

Total pay: the UK sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's range to the lower tenth of the pay ITJobsWatch gives for data architect jobs over six months; mid-level is the middle half of that range; senior runs from its middle to its top tenth. London's figure sits above the UK's.

Sources: ITJobsWatch: data architect (Oct 2026), Indeed (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Data protection: the UK GDPR, kept from the EU's rules after Brexit, and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply in the UK, with the ICO, the UK's information regulator, as the authority architects answer to when personal data is involved.

Switzerland

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: CHF 99,191 to CHF 126,000 a year
  • Mid-level: CHF 126,000 to CHF 138,369 a year
  • Senior: CHF 138,369 to CHF 161,086 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives data architects in Switzerland bonuses of about CHF 8,000 to CHF 23,000 a year.

No Swiss source gives figures by level, and both rest on few salaries: entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's range to the lower quarter of Payscale's, mid-level from there to Payscale's average, and senior from that average to the top of Indeed's range. Payscale's Swiss page was last updated in 2024.

Sources: Indeed (Oct 2026), Payscale: data architect (Sep 2024).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Data protection: Switzerland's revised data protection act, the FADP, in force since September 2023, asks for records of processing and privacy by design, which shape how Swiss data platforms are built.

India

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: ₹10 lakh to ₹24.46 lakh a year
  • Mid-level: ₹23.58 lakh to ₹28.49 lakh a year
  • Senior: ₹28.49 lakh to ₹40 lakh a year

Total pay: Payscale gives data architects in India bonuses of about ₹60,000 to ₹6.55 lakh and profit sharing of up to ₹50,000 a year.

Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's data architect range to its average for data warehouse architects, an older page with few salaries; mid-level from Payscale's figure for five to nine years of work to its average; senior from that average to the upper tenth, which Payscale rounds. Indeed's Indian page rests on too few salaries to use.

Sources: Payscale: data architect (Aug 2026), Payscale: data warehouse architect (Oct 2022).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Data protection: India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, the DPDP Act of 2023, with its rules being brought in by stages, sets consent and deletion duties that data platforms in India must support.

Platforms, standards and data laws

Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery and Microsoft Fabric appear in most platform ads, each with its own way of storing data, charging for compute and sharing tables; companies choose by the cloud they already use, their skills and their contracts, and some run two. The DAMA body of knowledge and frameworks such as TOGAF describe the craft in general terms; a few ads name them, most ask for designs you led.

Personal data brings the law into the design. In the EU the GDPR asks for a purpose, as little data as needed, limited storage and proven deletion, and the EU Data Act adds rules on sharing data from connected products. Elsewhere, California's CCPA in the US and India's DPDP Act set rules of their own, and each country section below names its law. This page is general information, not legal advice: the company's data protection officer and lawyers decide what applies.

Your CV for a data architect job

A data architect's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of data who wants to know which landscape you designed, for how many teams, and what changed because of it. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the methods and platforms as the ad does: "data modelling", "data warehouse", "lakehouse", "data governance", "Snowflake", "Databricks", "Azure". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say how big it was: the number of source systems, domains, users of the models, and the size of the data where it matters.
  • Write a course or a certification you are working towards as "in progress" with the planned month, next to the design work it supports.
  • Name the governance and privacy work you led, such as a data catalogue or a deletion process, because regulated employers look for it.

Prove each skill

An architecture line proves itself with something people now rely on: a model many reports use, one definition where there were three, a platform that replaced several, a cost or a delay that went away.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Data modellingConceptual, logical and physical models; dimensional models for reporting; naming and keys that last for years.Designed data models.Designed the customer and contract model for 9 source systems; 40 reports now use one definition of an active customer.
Data warehouseLayers from raw to curated, history kept on purpose, and a design that answers the business's questions fast.Responsible for the data warehouse.Re-layered the warehouse into raw, cleaned and business tables; a new source now takes two weeks instead of two months.
Data governanceOwners and stewards for each domain, agreed definitions, access rules and a catalogue people actually use.Introduced data governance.Set up owners and stewards for 6 data domains with a shared glossary; disputes over figures in board packs stopped.
LakehouseLakehouse tables, notebooks and jobs, the catalogue and the cost of the clusters behind them. depends on the provider platformBuilt a data platform.Led the design of a lakehouse on Databricks that replaced three warehouses; running cost fell by a third.
Privacy by designWorked on GDPR topics.Designed deletion and masking across the platform so a customer's data can be removed in a day, as the EU's GDPR asks.

Write only what you designed or decided yourself. If a team built it, say which part was yours: the model, the standard, the decision record, the review.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the data architect jobs in our job search (data architect, data platform architect and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a data architect do?
Designs how a company's data is modelled, stored, moved and governed, so that reports, products and AI rest on figures people can trust.
How is a data architect different from a data engineer?
The data engineer builds and runs the pipelines; the data architect sets the models, standards and platform choices they follow. Many architects were data engineers first.
Which platform should I learn?
The one the jobs you want name. Modelling, governance and cost thinking carry over between Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery and Microsoft Fabric.
Do I need a certification?
No law asks for one. Some ads name a framework or a platform certificate; most ask for designs you led.
What should a data architect's CV show first?
The models and platforms you designed, how many systems and teams they served, and what became faster, cheaper or more reliable.
