What a data analyst does

A data analyst answers questions with data: why sales fell last month, which campaign brought the best customers, where people give up in the sign-up form. The work is getting the data, checking it, analysing it, and showing the answer in a report, a chart or a dashboard, then explaining what it means for the decision at hand.

Job titles vary: Data Analyst, BI Analyst (business intelligence: reports and dashboards for the business), Reporting Analyst, Marketing or Product Analyst. Senior titles add Lead or Principal. We count the general titles as one role.

The skills the ads ask for

Your CV for a data analyst job

A data analyst CV is read twice: first by the hiring software, which looks for the words of the ad, then by a manager, who looks for decisions your analysis changed. Write for both.

Use the words the ads use

  • Name your tools exactly as the ad does: "SQL", "Power BI", "Tableau", "Excel", "Python". Say which database or warehouse you queried, such as SnowflakeAsked in 13% of data analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).A cloud data warehouse: large tables, fast SQL, and costs that depend on how you query. depends on the provider or BigQuery.
  • Put a short skills line near the top: SQLAsked in 57% of data analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The core tool: joins, grouping, window functions and checking your own results, on real company data., ExcelAsked in 16% of data analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Pivot tables, lookups, clean formulas and charts; still where many business users read and check numbers., your dashboard tool such as Power BIAsked in 36% of data analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Build reports and dashboards: data models, measures and refresh schedules; common where firms run Microsoft. depends on the provider, and PythonAsked in 40% of data analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Python for analysis: pandas for tables, charts, and scripts that automate a monthly report. or RR for statistics and reports; common in research, health and public-sector teams. if you use them.
  • Name the kind of analysis: reporting, dashboards, A/B tests, forecasting, funnel or cohort analysis.
  • Only list what you could discuss for ten minutes. Every tool on the CV can become an interview question.

Prove each skill

A tool in a list proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: the question, what you built or found, and what changed because of it, such as money, time, customers or a decision.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
SQLAdvanced SQL.Wrote the SQL behind the weekly sales report for 40 stores; finance stopped its manual checks, saving a day a week.
Power BIBuilt dashboards.Built a Power BI dashboard used by 60 sales managers each week; stock-outs fell by 12% after its launch.
ExcelExcel expert.Replaced 9 linked spreadsheets with one checked model; month-end close went from 5 days to 3.
A/B testingAsked in 12% of data analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Averages and spread, sampling, significance and confidence intervals; enough to say how sure a finding is.Analysed experiments.Analysed 20 email A/B tests; the winning subject lines raised opens by a fifth.
PythonPython.Automated a monthly report in Python; 2 days of copy and paste became a 5-minute run.

Never claim what you did not do. A portfolio project counts: say what it is, link it, and describe its results the same way.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the data analyst jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a data analyst do?
Gets, checks and analyses data to answer business questions, and shows the answers in reports, charts and dashboards that people use to decide.

SQL, then Excel, then one dashboard tool such as Power BI or Tableau. Python or R come next and set you apart.
Do I need a degree to become a data analyst?
Many ads ask for one, often in a numerate subject, but proof counts: a portfolio of real analyses with clear results can open doors.
What should a data analyst CV show first?
Two or three analyses or dashboards with the decision they changed, then a short skills line in the words of the ad.
