What a brand manager does

A brand manager, a Markenmanager in many German ads, is responsible for a brand as if it were a small business: its position against competitors, its look and voice, its campaigns, its new products and pack designs, and its results in sales, share and brand health. The role is common in consumer goods, where a company runs many brands side by side, and grows in retail, finance, technology and health. Brand managers rarely make the ads themselves; they brief agencies, judge the work and answer for the budget.

The role sits among the other marketing roles. The marketing manager runs marketing as a whole, often with several brand managers in the team; the product marketing manager launches and positions products, mostly in technology; the communications manager handles press and corporate voice; the digital marketing manager runs the online channels a brand's campaigns use. Brand ambassadors, who promote products at events or in shops, do other work and are not covered here. The steps from brand coordinator to brand director are in the career paths of this role.

Advertising and trademark rules differ by place; each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Advertising: India's ASCI, the Advertising Standards Council of India, sets the advertising code and the labels influencers must use for paid posts; Indian brand teams often plan for several languages, with EnglishAsked in 47% of brand manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The language of most international brand teams, agencies and global brand guidelines. for the team.

The advertising rules a brand meets are named side by side, each with its place. In the EU the directive on empowering consumers for the green transition applies from 27 September 2026: generic environmental claims such as "eco-friendly" need recognised proof, and sustainability labels need a certification scheme or a public authority behind them. Claims are also judged under the German UWG, by the US FTC, by the UK ASA under its CAP Code, by the Swiss Fairness Commission and under India's ASCI code. The company's legal team says which apply to a claim or a campaign.

One brand year, step by step

  1. Look back: sales, share, brand health and what competitors did last year.
  2. Decide: who the brand is for, the one thing it must stand for, and the few goals for the year.
  3. Plan: campaigns, launches, pack changes, promotions and the budget behind each.
  4. Brief and build: with agencies, the sales team and the supply chain, to fixed dates.
  5. Read the results: sales, tracking and campaign measures, and change the plan mid-year if needed.

The hard part is rarely the creative idea; it is saying no to the many good ideas that do not fit the brand, and keeping the brand the same in every channel while the people around it change.

Your CV for a brand manager job

A brand manager's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a marketing director who wants to see which brands you ran, in which markets, and what moved. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Write the work as the ads do: "brand management", "brand strategy", "campaigns", "consumer insight", "launches", "agency management". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the brands, the categories and the markets, where you may.
  • Show results the business recognised: sales, share, margin, brand health, a launch that stayed.
  • A marketing qualification still under way goes on the CV as in progress, with the module you take next.

Prove each skill

A brand line proves itself with a brand, a decision and a result someone outside marketing would accept.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the brand manager jobs in our job search (brand managers, brand management roles, heads of brand and the German title Markenmanager), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; marketing manager titles are counted on the marketing manager's page. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a brand manager do?
Owns a brand: what it stands for, its campaigns and launches, its budget and its results.
Is a brand manager the same as a marketing manager?
Close, but narrower: the brand manager runs one brand or a few, the marketing manager often all of marketing.
Do I need a degree in marketing?
Many have one in business or marketing, but brands you grew count for more than the subject.
Is a qualification required?
Rarely; some ads name one, and a record of brands and launches says more.
What should a brand manager's CV show first?
The brands and markets you ran, the decisions you took and what moved in sales and brand health.
