What a marketing manager does

A marketing manager brings in customers and makes the brand worth choosing. The work starts with positioning: who the buyers are, what problem the product solves for them, and why it beats the alternatives. From that come the messages, the channels, the budget and the campaigns, and every month the figures that show what worked.

Most jobs today mix brand and performance marketing. Brand work makes people know and trust the company; performance work turns attention into leads and sales through measurable channels such as search, social and email. In business-to-business companies, marketing works closely with sales on the leads it hands over. The ladder runs from marketing specialist to marketing director and CMO, the chief marketing officer; see the career paths.

Your CV for a marketing manager job

A marketing manager's CV is read by hiring software, on the words of the ad, and then by a marketing leader who asks of every campaign: what did it bring, and at what cost? Write for both.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the channels and methods the way marketing ads name them: "SEO", "SEA", "performance marketing", "lead generation", "marketing automation", "go-to-market", "brand strategy". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the tools with what you did in them: "built lead scoring in HubSpotAsked in 4% of marketing manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Run campaigns, forms, lead scoring and automated emails in HubSpot, linked to the sales team.", "set up conversion tracking in GA4Asked in 8% of marketing manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Set up GA4 events and conversions, and read where visitors come from and where they drop out.", not a list of logos.
  • Write a course or certificate as it stands, and one not yet finished as "in progress", such as "CIM Diploma in Professional Marketing, in progress".
  • Add a link to a portfolio or a campaign you can show, if the employer allows it.

Prove each skill

A marketing line proves itself with the goal, the channel and the result in a figure the business cares about: leads, customers, cost per customer or revenue, not only clicks.

Never claim the whole result of a team or an agency. Say what was yours: "I planned", "I briefed", "my campaign".

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the marketing manager jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a marketing manager do?
Decides whom to sell to and what to say, plans the channels and the budget, runs campaigns with a team or agencies, and reports what they brought.
What is performance marketing?
Marketing judged on measurable results, such as leads or sales from search, social and email, with the budget moved to what works.
Which tools do ads ask for?
GA4 for web analytics, Google Ads, HubSpot or Salesforce for leads and automation, and a CRM shared with sales.
Do I need a marketing qualification?
Rarely. A degree and results count most; the CIM in the UK and short courses in tools such as Google Ads help as proof.
What should a marketing manager CV show first?
Two or three campaigns with the goal, the channel and the result in leads, customers or cost, then the tools, in the words of the ads.
