What an e-commerce manager does
An e-commerce manager, an Onlineshop-Manager in some German ads, answers for a company's online sales: the shop platform and its features, the range and its product data, prices and promotions online, traffic from search, ads and email, the checkout and payments, delivery and returns, and often the company's presence on marketplaces. The role is found at retailers and brands that sell to consumers, and more and more at wholesalers and manufacturers that sell to businesses online. Ads for an e-commerce specialist describe the same work at an earlier step, with a part of the shop rather than all of it, and are covered here too.
The role sits between several others. The digital marketing manager brings visitors through search, ads and social media; the e-commerce manager turns them into orders and repeat customers. The category manager decides the range and its prices with suppliers; the marketing manager owns the brand and its campaigns; a product manager may own the shop's software in larger companies. The steps from e-commerce assistant to e-commerce director are in the career paths of this role.
Online-selling rules differ by place; each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice.
The skills the ads ask for

One shop year, step by step
- Look at the funnel: visits, product views, baskets, orders, returns and repeat buyers.
- Pick the leaks: the few steps where most customers or most margin get lost.
- Plan: platform changes, tests, campaigns and range work for the year, with a budget for each.
- Run: releases with IT and agencies, promotions with buying and marketing, peaks with logistics.
- Measure: sales, margin and customer numbers each week, and move effort to what works.
The hard part is rarely a single feature; it is getting buying, marketing, IT and logistics to treat the shop as one business, so a great campaign does not meet an empty warehouse or a slow checkout.
Your CV for an e-commerce manager job
An e-commerce manager's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a head of e-commerce or a commercial director who wants to see which shop you ran, how big it was in words that fit, and what changed in sales and margin. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the work as the ads do: "e-commerce", "online shop", "conversion rate", "marketplaces", "product data", and the platform by name. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Name the shop, its market and whether it sold to consumers or businesses.
- Show results the business recognised: online sales, conversion, average order value, returns, margin.
- A course or certificate still under way goes on the CV as in progress, with the module you take next.
Prove each skill
A shop line proves itself with a problem in the funnel, the change you made and what it did to sales or margin.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| ConversionFind where visitors drop out of the shop and test changes that bring more of them to order. | Optimised the shop. | Rebuilt the mobile checkout after testing three versions; orders from phones rose the next quarter. |
| PlatformRun the shop on its platform day to day and judge when a change of platform is worth it. | Managed the shop system. | Led the move of a fashion shop to a new platform with no lost search traffic and no day of downtime. |
| MarketplacesSell on marketplaces with the right range, prices and content, and know what it costs. | Sold on marketplaces. | Opened two marketplaces for the core range with its own prices and content; they now bring new buyers. |
| Product dataKeep product names, images, attributes and prices complete and correct in every channel. | Maintained product data. | Cleaned the attributes of the whole range; filters worked again and fewer customers searched in vain. |
| ReturnsWork with the warehouse and carriers on delivery times, costs and returns. | Handled returns. | Added size advice to product pages with the warehouse team; returns for size fell in the main category. |
Keep confidential details out: no sales figures your employer has not published, no supplier terms and no customer data.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the e-commerce manager jobs in our job search (e-commerce managers in every spelling, online shop managers, heads of e-commerce, e-commerce specialists and the German title Onlineshop-Manager), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; online marketing and SEO titles are counted on the digital marketing manager's page. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an e-commerce manager do?
- Runs an online shop as a business: the platform, the range online, traffic, the checkout, delivery and results.
- Is an e-commerce manager the same as a digital marketing manager?

- Do I need to know how to code?
- No; you work with developers and agencies, but you should know how the shop platform and its data work.
- Is a certificate required?
- Rarely; platform courses help, and a shop whose numbers you improved says more.
- What should an e-commerce manager's CV show first?
- The shop you ran, its platform and market, and what changed in sales, conversion and margin.
