What a communications manager does

A communications manager protects and builds the reputation of an organisation by what it says. The work has three parts: the press and the public outside, the employees inside, and the plan for the day something goes wrong. Around them sit speeches and posts for the leaders, the news on the website and the intranet, and the measures that show whether people understood.

The job sits next to marketing but is not the same. The marketing manager and the product marketing manager sell products to buyers; communications speaks for the organisation as a whole, to journalists, employees, neighbours and investors, and much of what it does is never paid for. Internal communications works closely with the HR manager when jobs, pay or offices change. German ads often say Pressesprecher for the spokesperson. The steps from communications specialist to chief communications officer are in the career paths of this role.

Some rules decide what may be said and when, and they differ by place. Listed companies must publish news that could move their share price at once and to everyone, under rules named in each country's section; employee news in Germany may need the works council first; and personal data in newsletters and photos falls under the EU's GDPR. This page describes the job and is not legal advice.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

A press announcement, step by step

  1. The story: what happened, why it matters to readers, and the one sentence a journalist should remember.
  2. The facts and approvals: figures checked with the owners, legal and, for a listed company, investor relations, and the order in which people hear it.
  3. The material: the press release, questions and answers for the spokesperson, a post for the company channels and a note for employees, who hear it first or at the same time.
  4. The release: sent to the right journalists, sometimes earlier under an embargo, a date before which they agree not to publish.
  5. The follow-up: answers to questions, interviews, and a short report on what was published and how it read.

Around the announcements come the steady tasks: the intranet and the employee newsletter, speeches for the chief executive, the crisis manual and its rehearsals, and the measures of tone and reach. A good communications manager is trusted by journalists because the facts are right and by leaders because the advice is honest.

Your CV for a communications manager job

A communications manager's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of communications who wants to see stories placed, crises handled and employees who understood a change. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as the ad does: "press relations", "internal communications", "crisis communications", "spokesperson", "intranet", and the tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say for whom you spoke: the kind of organisation, listed or not, and its size and markets.
  • Give results the way your team measured them, such as coverage in the target media or reach of employee news, without confidential figures.
  • Name a course in progress, such as a public relations diploma, as in progress with the month you expect to finish.

Prove each skill

A communications line proves itself with something that was published, understood or avoided: a story in the press you aimed at, a change employees knew about before rumours, a crisis that stayed small.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the communications manager jobs in our job search (communications and PR managers, press officers and spokespeople, and the German titles Kommunikationsmanager, Pressesprecher and Referent Unternehmenskommunikation), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; marketing and product marketing jobs are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a communications manager do?
Plans what an organisation says to the press, to its employees and in a crisis, writes or edits it, and checks how it was understood.
Is communications the same as marketing?
No. Marketing sells products to buyers; communications speaks for the whole organisation, to journalists, employees and the public. Many teams work side by side.
Do I need a journalism degree?
Not always. Many come from journalism, others from marketing, politics or the field they now speak for.
Is a spokesperson the same job?
Often part of it: the spokesperson speaks for the company to the press, and in smaller teams the communications manager does both.
What should a communications manager's CV show first?
The stories you placed, the employee changes you explained and any crisis you helped handle.
