What a clinical research associate does

A clinical research associate, in German often a Klinischer Monitor, works for the sponsor of a clinical trial or for a contract research organisation and looks after the trial sites: the hospitals and practices where patients take part. A CRA helps choose the sites, trains them at the start, visits them during the study to check consent forms, data and safety reports against the patients' records, and closes them at the end. Between visits come calls, queries, reports and a lot of travel.

The role sits between others. The study nurse and the study doctor at the site care for the patients and enter the data; those are different jobs, with no page here. The clinical project manager above the CRAs runs the trial as a project, much as a project manager runs any other, and the regulatory affairs manager uses the trial's results in the dossier. The steps from clinical trial assistant to director of clinical operations are in the career paths of this role.

One guideline is international: ICH-GCP, the Good Clinical Practice guideline of the International Council for Harmonisation, which trials in many countries follow. The laws are national or regional, and each country's section names its own: the EU CTR in the EU, US FDA rules with an IND and IRBs in the US, the MHRA in the UK, Swissmedic with the Swiss ethics committees, and the CDSCO in India. This page describes the work; it is not medical or regulatory advice.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €45,200 to €50,527 a year
  • Mid-level: €52,872 to €61,011 a year
  • Senior: €63,197 to €69,949 a year

Total pay: neither German source gives a bonus figure for clinical research associates.

Entry level runs from the low end of StepStone's range to Gehalt.de's figure for under three years of experience; mid-level from Gehalt.de's figure for three to six years to its middle figure. The senior range is an estimate as well, from StepStone's figure for experienced CRAs to Gehalt.de's upper quarter. Both sites give estimates and say nothing of how many salaries they rest on.

Sources: Gehalt.de: Clinical Research Associate (CRA) (2026), StepStone: Clinical Research Associate (2026).

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

Rules and titles: trials of medicines in Germany run under the EU CTR, the EU Clinical Trials Regulation, with applications through the EU portal CTIS; the German BfArM or the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut and an ethics committee (Ethik-Kommission) assess each one. Device studies follow the EU MDR and the German MPDG. Ads say Clinical Research Associate, CRA or Klinischer Monitor.

Language and travel: most German ads ask for GermanAsked for in most German ads, for sites, patients' documents and German authorities. and EnglishThe language of most protocols, systems and sponsors; most ads ask for it., and many for a driving licenceAsked for in many ads, as visits to sites are often by car. for visits to sites.

United States

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: $66,932 to $79,451 a year
  • Mid-level: $79,451 to $99,040 a year
  • Senior: $104,144 to $120,000 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives clinical research associates bonuses of about $600 to $10,000 a year; a bonus depends on the employer and the year.

Entry level runs from Payscale's figure for CRAs in their first year to its average for the role; mid-level from there to its average for senior CRAs; senior from Indeed's average for CRA ads to the upper tenth of Payscale's range for senior CRAs.

Sources: Payscale: clinical research associate (Oct 2026), Payscale: senior clinical research associate (Sep 2026), Indeed (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment, often home-based with travel. Under US FDA rules a new drug is tested in people under an IND, an investigational new drug application, and each study is approved by an IRB, an institutional review board. ACRP and SoCRA, US-based associations, offer CRA certifications some US ads name as welcome.

United Kingdom

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: £28,102 to £36,967 a year
  • Mid-level: £36,967 to £43,568 a year
  • Senior: £51,000 to £67,546 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives UK clinical research associates bonuses of about £490 to £7,000 a year.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's range to Payscale's average; mid-level from there to Indeed's average; senior from the upper tenth of Payscale's range to the top of Indeed's. Both UK pages rest on few salaries.

Sources: Payscale (Jan 2026), Indeed (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

Rules: in the UK the MHRA and a research ethics committee review each trial application together, and the UK has updated its own clinical trial regulations since it left the EU system. Many UK CRAs visit hospitals of the NHS, where the research and development office of each trust also approves the study.

Switzerland

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: CHF 81,000 to CHF 85,091 a year
  • Mid-level: CHF 86,000 to CHF 88,707 a year
  • Senior: CHF 94,900 to CHF 99,000 a year

Total pay: neither Swiss source gives a bonus figure for clinical research associates.

Entry level runs from Medi-Karriere's figure for up to two years of experience to Payscale's figure for CRAs in their first year; mid-level from Medi-Karriere's figure for three to eight years to Payscale's average; senior from Medi-Karriere's figure for nine to eleven years to the upper tenth of Payscale's range. Payscale's Swiss page rests on few salaries and was last updated in 2025, and Medi-Karriere draws on other sites' figures, so the Swiss figures are thin.

  • Senior: ₹7.33 lakh to ₹8.63 lakh a year

Total pay: Payscale gives clinical research associates in India bonuses of about ₹5,000 to ₹1.45 lakh a year.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's range, a monthly figure times twelve, to Payscale's figure for CRAs in their first year; mid-level from there to Payscale's average; senior from the top of Indeed's range, again times twelve, to the upper tenth of Payscale's. Indeed's page rests on very few salaries.

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

Rules: in India the CDSCO approves trials under the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules of 2019, an ethics committee registered with it reviews each site, and every trial is registered in the CTRI, the Clinical Trials Registry of India, before the first patient is enrolled.

A site through a trial, step by step

  1. Selection: visit possible sites, check that they have the patients, the staff and the equipment, and report which can do the study.
  2. Initiation: train the site team on the protocol, the systems and the safety reporting before the first patient.
  3. Monitoring: visit regularly or remotely, check consent, eligibility and data against the patients' records, and follow up every finding.
  4. Safety and quality: make sure adverse events are reported on time and that deviations are recorded and fixed.
  5. Close-out: check that every query is closed, the files are complete and the drug or device is accounted for, then close the site.

Around the plan come the surprises: a site that recruits no one, a finding that points to careless work or worse, an inspection announced at short notice. A good CRA is trusted by sites for being helpful and by the sponsor for reports that tell the truth.

Your CV for a clinical research associate job

A clinical research associate's CV is read by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and then by a CRA manager who wants to know which phases and therapy areas you monitored, how many sites you held and how your sites did in audits. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as the ad does: "monitoring visits", "ICH-GCP", "source data verification", "site management", "risk-based monitoring", and the systems you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say what kind of trials: phases, therapy areas, medicines or devices, and the countries of your sites.
  • Show results the way CRAs are judged: sites opened on time, recruitment, open queries, audit and inspection outcomes.
  • Name a CRA course or a certification in progress as in progress, with the month you expect it.

Prove each skill

A CRA line proves itself with sites, a phase and an outcome: what you monitored and what happened in the audit or at database lock.

Safety reportingMake sure sites report adverse events correctly and on time, and follow serious ones up.Checked adverse events.Checked every serious adverse event at my sites against the records; all reported within the deadline.
Site selectionKnow how a trial runs from protocol to report, and what each site and each document is for.Selected sites.Ran feasibility for twelve sites and opened seven, all of which reached their recruitment target.

Keep confidential details out: no study codes, drug names or patient details a sponsor has not made public.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the clinical research associate jobs in our job search (clinical research associates and CRAs, clinical trial and clinical project managers, and the German titles Klinischer Monitor and Studienkoordinator in clinical trials), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; study nurse and study doctor ads are not counted here. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a clinical research associate do?
Selects, trains and visits the sites of a clinical trial, checks consent, data and safety reports, and follows every finding until it is fixed.
Is a CRA the same as a study nurse?
No. A study nurse works at the hospital or practice and cares for the trial's patients; a CRA works for the sponsor or a research organisation and checks the site's work.
Do I need a science or nursing degree?
Most ads ask for a degree in life sciences, pharmacy, medicine or nursing, and some trial experience.
How much do CRAs travel?
Often a lot, to sites by car, train or plane; remote monitoring has reduced it in many trials.
What should a CRA's CV show first?
The phases, therapy areas and sites you monitored, and how they did in audits and at database lock.
