What a biomedical engineer does
A biomedical engineer, a Medizintechnik Ingenieur in German ads, develops medical devices: infusion pumps, monitors, implants, surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment and the software inside them. The work runs from user needs and requirements to design, risk management, prototypes, verification and validation, and the documents that prove the device is safe and does what it claims. Every step leaves a record, because the device must be traceable for its whole life.
Several titles sit next to this one. The regulatory affairs manager takes the device through approval with the authorities; the quality manager runs the quality system; the clinical research associate monitors clinical studies; the mechanical engineer designs mechanics in many industries. A Medizintechniker in Germany is often a service technician who installs and repairs devices, and doctors, nurses and other clinical staff use the devices; neither is covered here. The steps from junior biomedical engineer to head of medical device engineering are in the career paths of this role.
Device rules differ by country, and each country's section names its own. This page describes device development in general; it is not regulatory, legal or career advice.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Rules and work: devices sold in Germany fall under the EU MDR, the EU's Medical Device Regulation, and all but the lowest-risk ones need a certificate from a notified body, an organisation the EU designates to assess devices; the BfArM, the German federal institute for drugs and medical devices, is one of the German authorities. German ads say Medizintechnik Ingenieur or Medizintechnikingenieur; a Medizintechniker is often a service technician, not covered here.
Language: most German device makers work in German, so the ads mostly ask for GermanAsked for in most German device ads, for teams, suppliers and authorities in Germany., and international teams add EnglishThe language of the standards, most device documentation and international teams..
United States
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: $61,000 to $83,357 a year
- Mid-level: $83,357 to $94,882 a year
- Senior: $89,100 to $154,079 a year
Total pay: Payscale puts the yearly bonus of US biomedical engineers at about $1,000 to $9,000, and that of senior biomedical engineers at about $3,000 to $10,000.
Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's US range for biomedical engineers to its average, and mid-level from that average to the average of Indeed's range for biomedical engineer ads. - Entry level: £25,000 to £31,160 a year
- Mid-level: £31,160 to £56,311 a year
- Senior: £56,311 to £80,019 a year
Total pay: the UK sources name no bonus for biomedical engineers, and Payscale's UK figures for total pay match its base pay.
Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's UK range for biomedical engineers to its average; that page rests on few salaries and is from 2025. Mid-level runs from that average to the average of Indeed's UK range for biomedical engineer ads, and senior from there to its top. UK figures include hospital clinical engineers, who are paid on the NHS scales.
Sources: Payscale: biomedical engineer (Nov 2025), Indeed: biomedical engineer (Oct 2026).
Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.
Rules: the MHRA regulates medical devices in the UK; devices for Great Britain carry the UKCA mark, and the UK still accepts CE-marked devices for a transition period. Some UK biomedical engineers work in hospital clinical engineering departments, which this page touches only in passing.
Switzerland
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: CHF 84,729 to CHF 94,000 a year

- Senior: CHF 109,978 to CHF 142,751 a year
Total pay: no Swiss source gives a bonus figure for biomedical engineers.
Payscale's Swiss page for biomedical engineers rests on few salaries and its own range is not usable, so only its averages are used. Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's Swiss range for engineer ads to Payscale's average for biomedical engineers with one to four years, including bonuses; mid-level from Payscale's average for all biomedical engineers to the average of Indeed's engineer range; senior from there to its top.
Sources: Payscale: biomedical engineer (Feb 2026), Indeed: engineer (Oct 2026).
Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.
Rules: Swissmedic supervises medical devices in Switzerland under the Swiss Medical Devices Ordinance, the MedDO, which follows the EU's rules; since the Swiss and EU agreement stopped covering devices in 2021, makers from abroad need a Swiss representative. Swiss ads often ask for German or French next to EnglishThe language of the standards, most device documentation and international teams..
India
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: ₹1.19 lakh to ₹3.47 lakh a year
- Mid-level: ₹3.47 lakh to ₹5.3 lakh a year

Total pay: Payscale puts the yearly bonus of biomedical engineers in India at ₹3,000 to ₹3.21 lakh.
Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's range for biomedical engineers to its average, and mid-level from that average to twelve times the top monthly figure of Indeed's India range for biomedical engineer ads. Senior runs from there to the salary below which Payscale puts nine in ten. Both sources mix design engineers with hospital equipment engineers, and Payscale's page is older, from 2025.
Sources: Payscale: biomedical engineer (Sep 2025), Indeed: biomedical engineer (Feb 2026).
Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.
Rules and work: India's CDSCO regulates medical devices under India's Medical Devices Rules of 2017. In Indian ads, a biomedical engineer is often a hospital engineer who installs and maintains equipment; this page covers design and development.
Device rules and bodies are named side by side, each with its place. In the EU, the EU MDR sets the rules and notified bodies assess most devices; the German BfArM is one of the German authorities; in the US, the FDA clears or approves devices, many through a 510(k); in the UK, the MHRA regulates devices under the UKCA mark; in Switzerland, Swissmedic supervises them under the Swiss MedDO; and in India, the CDSCO regulates them under the Medical Devices Rules. Which route a device takes is a question for regulatory affairs.
The standards behind the design are international: ISO 13485 for the quality system, ISO 14971 for risk management, IEC 60601 for electrical safety, IEC 62304 for device software, IEC 62366 for usability and ISO 10993 for biocompatibility.
One device, step by step
- Needs: collect the users' needs and the intended use, and turn them into design inputs.
- Design: build the device and its risk file side by side, with design reviews at each stage.
- Verify: test that the design meets every input: bench tests, electrical safety, software, biocompatibility.
- Validate: show with real users, and where needed clinical data, that it meets their needs.
- Transfer: hand the design to production with its specifications, tests and the complete file.
The hardest part is rarely the clever design; it is keeping every decision traceable from the first need to the last test, through every change.
Your CV for a biomedical engineer job
A biomedical engineer's CV first meets software that searches it for the ad's words, then a lead engineer who wants to know which devices you worked on, which part was yours and whether they reached the market. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the work as the ads do: "ISO 13485", "design controls", "risk management", "verification", "EU MDR", the standard you worked to. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Name the device class and type: active device, implant, software, diagnostic.
- Say how far the work went: concept, verification, market approval, on the market.
- A standards course or a quality training you are still taking goes on the CV as in progress, with the planned date.
Prove each skill
A device line proves itself with the device, your part in it and what came of it.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| TestingPlan and run the tests that prove the device was built right and is the right device. | Did verification testing. | Planned and ran the verification of an infusion pump's flow accuracy, with every test traced to its design input. |
| RiskRun risk management for a device: hazards, risks, controls and the proof that each control works. | Worked on risk management. | Led the hazard analysis of a patient monitor and closed every high risk with a tested control. |
| SafetyDesign electrical medical equipment to pass its safety and electromagnetic tests. | Handled IEC 60601. | Prepared a monitor for its electrical safety tests, which it passed at the first lab visit. |
| DesignRun a design through inputs, outputs, reviews, verification, validation and transfer, with records. | Followed design controls. | Kept the design history file of a surgical instrument complete through two design changes and an audit. |
| UsabilityStudy how users handle the device and design out the mistakes they could make. | Did usability work. | Ran formative usability studies with nurses that removed two use errors before the summative test. |
Leave out what the employer keeps confidential: no unreleased devices, no patient data.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the biomedical engineer jobs in our job search (biomedical engineers, medical device engineers, and the German titles Medizintechnik Ingenieur, Medizintechnikingenieur and Biomedizintechniker (Ingenieur)), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; regulatory affairs managers, quality managers and clinical research associates are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a biomedical engineer do?
