What a regulatory affairs manager does

A regulatory affairs manager, often called an RA manager or in German a Zulassungsmanager, is the link between a company that makes medicines, medical devices or diagnostics and the authorities that let them be sold. The work starts early, with a plan of which approvals a product needs and what evidence they will ask for, runs through the submission and the questions that follow, and goes on for as long as the product is sold: every change, every new market and every safety report has its own rules.

The role sits next to three others. The quality manager runs the quality system that auditors check, and much of the evidence an RA manager submits comes from it. The compliance officer watches laws such as anti-bribery and data protection across the company, while RA owns the product rules. The clinical research associate monitors the trials whose results go into the dossier. The steps from regulatory affairs specialist to VP of regulatory affairs are in the career paths of this role.

The rules belong to each market, and each country's section names its own: the EU MDR and IVDR for devices and diagnostics in the EU with the EMA for many medicines, national agencies such as the German BfArM and the Swiss Swissmedic, the US FDA with its 510(k) and PMA routes for devices, the UK MHRA and India's CDSCO. This page describes the work; it is not legal or regulatory advice.

The skills the ads ask for

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

Authorities and titles: German manufacturers bring devices to the EU market under the EU MDR and IVDR with a notified body's certificate, while the BfArM, the German federal institute for drugs and medical devices, takes vigilance reports on devices and approves many medicines, with the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut for vaccines and blood products. Ads say Regulatory Affairs Manager, Zulassungsmanager or Referent Regulatory Affairs.

Language: German ads mostly ask for GermanAsked for in most German ads, for labels, instructions and contact with German authorities., for labels and authorities, and nearly always for EnglishThe language of most dossiers, guidance and contact with authorities and notified bodies..

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment. Devices reach the US market through the FDA, mostly by a 510(k) premarket notification, by De Novo for a new kind of lower-risk device, or by a PMA for the highest-risk class; medicines need an approved application to the US FDA. RAPS, the US-based professional society, runs the RAC certificate some US ads name as welcome.

Authorities: Swissmedic, the Swiss agency for therapeutic products, approves medicines and supervises devices. Swiss device rules follow the EU MDR closely, but Switzerland is outside the EU single market for devices, so Swiss makers name a representative in the EU and foreign makers one in Switzerland. Authorities: in India the CDSCO, under the Drugs Controller General of India, approves new drugs and clinical trials and licenses devices under the Medical Devices Rules of 2017, with state authorities for lower-risk manufacturing licences. Many Indian RA roles also prepare dossiers for export markets.

A submission, step by step

  1. Strategy: decide with development which markets come first, what class the product falls into and which route each authority offers.
  2. Evidence: collect what the route asks for, from test reports and the risk file to clinical data, and spot the gaps early.
  3. Dossier: write and assemble the file in the format each authority wants, and check that every claim points to its evidence.
  4. Questions: answer the authority's or the notified body's questions within their deadlines, with the experts who own each topic.
  5. After approval: keep registrations valid, assess every change, report incidents, and update labels when the rules move.

Around the plan come the surprises: a rule that changes during the project, a supplier change that touches a certified product, a deficiency letter with a short deadline. A good RA manager is trusted by the authorities for complete files and by the business for saying early what a plan will need.

Your CV for a regulatory affairs manager job

A regulatory affairs manager's CV is read by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and then by a head of RA who wants to know which products you brought to which markets, by which route, and how the questions went. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as the ad does: "regulatory affairs", "EU MDR", "technical documentation", the US "510(k)", "CTD", "post-market surveillance", and the systems you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say what kind of products: medicines, devices or diagnostics, their risk class, and the markets you covered.
  • Show results the way RA is judged: approvals won, deadlines met, questions closed in one round, audits passed without a major finding.
  • Name a course or a certificate in progress as in progress, with the month you expect to finish.

Prove each skill

An RA line proves itself with a product, a route and an outcome: what you submitted, to whom, and what came back.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the regulatory affairs manager jobs in our job search (regulatory affairs managers and specialists, RA managers, and the German titles Zulassungsmanager and Referent Regulatory Affairs), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; quality manager and compliance officer jobs are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a regulatory affairs manager do?
Plans and wins the approvals a medicine, device or diagnostic needs in each market, and keeps them valid through changes, safety reports and new rules.
Is regulatory affairs the same as quality?
No, but they work closely. Quality runs the system that makes the product right every time; RA proves to the authorities that the product may be sold.
Do I need a science degree?
Most ads ask for one in pharmacy, life sciences, engineering or medicine; the products decide which.
Do I need a certificate?
Rarely to be hired. Associations such as RAPS in the US and TOPRA in the UK offer courses and a certificate; experience with real submissions counts first.
What should an RA manager's CV show first?
The products, the markets and the routes you worked on, and what the authorities decided.
