What a consultant does
A consultant is hired from outside, or from an in-house team, to solve a problem a company cannot solve alone in the time it has. The work comes in projects: a few weeks to a year, with a team, a deadline and a client who pays for an answer. A typical week mixes interviews with the client's staff, analysis, a slide document, and a meeting where the findings are tested.
Management consulting answers questions about the business: should we enter this market, why are margins falling, how should the organisation be set up. Technology consulting puts systems in place or changes them: an ERP such as SAPAsked in 8% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The ERP many clients run; technology consultants configure it, move data into it and train its users., a move to a cloud such as AWSAsked in 2% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).One of the large clouds; cloud consultants plan which systems move there and in what order. or AzureAsked in 5% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Microsoft's cloud, common in companies that already run Microsoft software., or a data platform. Many projects need both: the business case first, then the system. The ladder runs from analyst to director or partner; see the career paths.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

How consultants are hired
Most consulting firms hire through the case interview: the interviewer describes a client's problem, and you work through it out loud. There are three common kinds: market sizing (how big is a market), profitability (why are profits falling) and market entry (should the client go into a new market). Technology consulting adds cases about choosing or moving a system.
What is tested is not a known answer but the way you get there: a clear structure, a hypothesis to test, sensible numbers, and a recommendation at the end. A fit interview checks why you want consulting and how you work with people. The interview questions walk through each kind with a worked answer.

Your CV for a consultant job
A consultant's CV is read twice: by the hiring software, on the words of the ad, and by a consultant who asks one question of every line: what changed for the client because of you? Write for both.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the work the way consulting ads name it: "project management", "business case", "process improvement", "workshop facilitation", "stakeholder management", "S/4HANA migration". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Name the systems and the clouds with what you did in them: "configured SAP FI/COThe finance part of SAP; asked for in many technology consulting ads for finance projects. for three entities", not "SAP" in a list.
- Write a certification exactly as it stands, and an exam not yet passed as "in progress", such as "AWS Solutions Architect Associate, in progress".
- Keep client names out unless you may use them; write the sector and the size instead, such as "a European insurer with 4,000 staff".
Prove each skill
A consultant's line proves itself with three parts: the client's problem, what you did, and what it changed, ideally with a number the client would recognise.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Problem solvingAsked in 11% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Break a vague client question into parts, form a hypothesis and test it with facts. | Strong analytical skills. | Found why a retailer's margin fell 2 points in a year: 60 percent was discounts no one approved; new rules recovered half. |
| PresentingAsked in 1% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Build slides whose headlines tell the story on their own, and present them to a client's leaders. | Excellent presentation skills. | Presented the target operating model to a client's board; approved in one meeting with a phased start. |
| Project managementAsked in 4% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Run a workstream: a plan by week, owners for each task, risks raised early and a deadline that holds. | Managed projects. | Ran a 12-week cost project with 5 client teams; savings of 8 million euros signed off by the CFO. |
| SAPAsked in 8% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The ERP many clients run; technology consultants configure it, move data into it and train its users. | SAP experience. | Moved order-to-cash for 3 countries to SAP S/4HANA; went live on the planned weekend with no lost orders. |
| ExcelAsked in 6% of consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Model a business case, size a market and clean client data quickly, with checks that catch errors. | Advanced Excel. | Built the market model for a market-entry case; used by the client to choose 2 of 6 countries. |
Never claim the whole project when you led a part. Say what was yours: "my workstream", "I built", "I ran the workshops".
How we read our data
- The jobs: the consultant jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
- Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a consultant do?
- Solves a client's problem in a project: gathers the facts, analyses them, recommends what to do, and often helps put it in place.
- What is the difference between management and technology consulting?
- Management consulting answers business questions such as strategy, costs or organisation; technology consulting puts systems in place, such as an ERP, a cloud or a data platform.
- What is a case interview?
- An interview where you solve a short business problem out loud: sizing a market, explaining falling profits or judging a market entry. The way you think counts more than the final number.
- Which skills matter most?
- Structured problem solving, project management, presenting and clear writing; for technology consulting, the system or cloud the firm sells.
- What should a consultant CV show first?
- Two or three projects with the client's problem, your part and what changed, each with a number, in the words of the ads.
