What a customer success manager does

A customer success manager, or CSM, looks after a group of customers once they have signed. The work is to make sure each one reaches the result it bought the product for: a good start, real use across the team, regular reviews with its leaders, early warning when something goes wrong, and a renewal that feels like the obvious next step. Most CSMs work for software firms that sell subscriptions, where a customer who leaves after a year costs more than a lost first sale.

The job is not customer service. The support team fixes individual problems as they come in; the CSM owns the whole relationship and plans ahead. It is not sales either: the sales manager and the account executives win the first contract, the sales engineer wins the technical decision, and the CSM takes over after the signature, often working with an account manager on renewals and growth. Customer feedback goes to the product manager. The steps from associate CSM to chief customer officer are in the career paths of this role.

Where the roles are: in India, many customer success managers work for software firms that serve customers abroad, often in their working hours, and others for firms that sell to Indian businesses.

A customer's year, step by step

  1. Handover from sales: what the customer bought, why, who decided and what they were promised.
  2. Onboarding: a plan for the first weeks with goals, set-up, training and a first visible result.
  3. Adoption: more teams using the product, and the features that matter used well.
  4. Reviews: regular meetings with the customer's leaders about results against their goals.
  5. Renewal and growth: risks dealt with early, the renewal prepared months ahead, and room to grow handed to the account manager.

Between these steps come the surprises: a champion who leaves, an outage, a price change, a competitor's offer. A good CSM hears about them first because the customer trusts them, and tells their own company early when an account is at risk.

Your CV for a customer success manager job

A customer success manager's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of customer success who wants to know which customers you looked after, how many stayed and what you did when one wanted to leave. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as the ad does: "customer success", "onboarding", "adoption", "renewals", "churn", "QBR", and the CRM or platform you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say what your portfolio was: the product, the kind and size of customers, and whether you ran a few large accounts or many small ones.
  • Give your results the way your company counted them, such as renewal rate, retention or growth in your portfolio, without confidential figures.
  • Keep a line on where you came from, such as support, sales, consulting or the industry you now serve, because it explains your strengths.

Prove each skill

A customer success line proves itself with a customer who stayed or grew: a rescue before renewal, an onboarding that started faster, a review that led to a larger contract.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the customer success manager jobs in our job search (customer and client success managers and the German title Kundenerfolgsmanager), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; customer service and call-centre jobs are not counted. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a customer success manager do?
Looks after customers after the sale: onboarding, adoption, regular reviews, early warning of risk, and renewals and growth together with sales.
Is customer success the same as customer service?
No. Support fixes individual problems as they come in; a CSM owns the relationship and plans ahead.
Is customer success a sales job?
Partly. Many CSMs have renewal or growth targets, but the main work is the customer's results; an account manager or account executive often handles the commercial side.
How are customer success managers paid?
Usually a base salary and often a variable part tied to renewals or growth; the pay sources by country are listed above, and each offer states its own plan.
What should a customer success manager's CV show first?
The customers you looked after, how many stayed or grew, and what you did when one was at risk.
