What a pricing manager does
A pricing manager, a Preismanager in some German ads, owns the prices a company charges: list prices and price lists, the discounts sales may give, promotions in retail, prices by channel and country, and the yearly price change. Pricing analysts do the analysis behind it; the pricing manager turns it into decisions and wins the business for them. The role is common in industry, wholesale, retail, software, transport and insurance. A hotel revenue manager does the same work for rooms, setting prices by date and demand, and is covered here too.
We list the role under Marketing & sales, not Finance: its daily work is the price customers pay, set with sales, marketing and category teams and judged by margin and volume, with finance as a partner. The sales manager sells within the price and discount rules a pricing manager sets; the category manager sets ranges and often retail prices for a category; the financial analyst and the FP&A manager plan and report the company's results, which prices feed. Revenue operations, the sales team's own processes and systems, is other work and is not covered here. The steps from pricing analyst to pricing director are in the career paths of this role.
Price-display and competition rules differ by place; each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Prices and competition: India's Legal Metrology rules ask for the maximum retail price on packaged goods, and India's CCI, the Competition Commission of India, enforces competition law; Indian pricing teams often work for other countries too, in EnglishThe language of most international pricing teams, tools and price lists..
The rules on showing prices and on competition are named side by side, each with its place, as far as the sources say. In the EU the Omnibus Directive amended the price indication rules: a shop that announces a price reduction must show the earlier price, which is the lowest price it charged in the 30 days before. The German PAngV carries that rule into German law. Agreeing prices with competitors is banned under EU and German law, by the US Sherman Act and by the UK's competition law, enforced by the CMA; the UK Price Marking Order sets how prices are shown, as the Swiss Price Indication Ordinance does in Switzerland and India's Legal Metrology rules do for packaged goods in India. The company's legal team says which apply to a price or a promotion.
One price change, step by step
- Understand: today's prices, discounts and margins by product, customer and channel.
- Model: what a change does to volume, revenue and margin, and how customers and competitors may react.
- Agree: the change with sales, marketing and finance, and the rules for exceptions.
- Launch: new price lists, system updates, sales guidance and customer letters, on one date.
- Track: what customers actually paid, where discounts grew back, and adjust.
The hard part is rarely the model; it is the moment when a large customer pushes back and the sales team wants an exception, and the price either holds or quietly leaks away.
Your CV for a pricing manager job
A pricing manager's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a head of pricing or a commercial director who wants to see which prices you set, for which business, and what happened to margin. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the work as the ads do: "pricing strategy", "price setting", "price elasticity", "discount management", "price increase", "margin". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Name the business, the products and the customers: industry, retail, software, hotels.
- Show results finance recognised: margin gained, discounts reduced, a price increase that held.
- A pricing certificate still under way goes on the CV as in progress, with the module you take next.
Prove each skill
A pricing line proves itself with a price decision, the evidence behind it and what it did to margin.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| StrategySet how a company prices: by value, by cost or by market, and the rules each price follows. | Responsible for pricing. | Moved spare parts from cost-plus to value-based prices; margin on the range rose within a year. |
| DiscountsKeep discounts inside agreed limits and see where the price leaks between list and invoice. | Managed discounts. | Set discount limits and an approval path for the sales team; average discounts fell without lost customers. |
| ElasticityEstimate how sales react to a price change, and what customers will accept for a product. | Analysed price sensitivity. | Estimated how volume reacted to past changes and found the products where a rise would hold. |
| Price increaseSet and change prices for products, customers and channels, and explain each change in margin terms. | Implemented price increases. | Ran the yearly price change across four countries with letters, sales training and weekly tracking. |
| RevenuePrice fixed capacity, such as rooms or seats, by date and demand to fill it at the best margin. | Did revenue management. | Set room prices by date and demand for a city hotel group; occupancy held while the average rate rose. |
Keep confidential details out: no actual prices, no customer terms and no names of contacts.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the pricing manager jobs in our job search (pricing managers, pricing analysts, heads of pricing, revenue managers and the German title Preismanager), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; financial analyst and sales titles are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a pricing manager do?
- Sets the prices and discount rules of a company, so it sells enough and keeps its margin.
- Is a pricing manager a finance role?
- It sits between sales, marketing and finance; the daily work is the commercial price, so we list it under marketing and sales.
- Is a hotel revenue manager a pricing manager?
- Close: a revenue manager sets room prices by date and demand, the same craft for fixed capacity.
- Is a certificate required?
- Rarely; some ads name one, and prices that held up in the market say more.
- What should a pricing manager's CV show first?
- The prices you set, for which business, and what happened to margin and volume.
