What a database administrator does

A database administrator, a DBA, answers for the databases a business runs on: that they are backed up and can be restored, that a second copy takes over when the first fails, that they are fast enough, patched and upgraded, and that only the right people and programs can read or change the data. When a database stops in the night, the DBA on call brings it back.

The job is changing. Cloud providers now run much of the routine work, so DBAs spend more time on design, automation, performance, security and cost, and work closely with developers. Titles vary: Database Administrator, Database Engineer, Database Reliability Engineer, and product titles such as Oracle DBA or SQL Server DBA. The steps from junior to head of database engineering are in the career paths of this role.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

SkillWhat is expected
SQLRead and tune any query: joins, indexes, execution plans, transactions and locks, in the dialect of your product.
LinuxMost databases run on Linux: storage, memory, file systems, services and the logs that explain a crash.
PostgreSQLRun it in production: replication, backups with point-in-time recovery, vacuum, upgrades and extensions.
OracleRun Oracle Database: backup and recovery tools, standby databases, patching and performance reports.
AzureManaged databases on Azure: service tiers, backups, failover groups and what the provider runs for you. depends on the provider
MySQLRun MySQL or MariaDB: replication, backups, the storage engine's settings and slow query analysis.
Windows ServerMicrosoft SQL Server usually runs on Windows Server, with Active Directory for logins and permissions.
BashScripts for backups, checks and routine jobs, written so another DBA can read and rerun them.
AWSManaged databases on AWS: instance sizes, snapshots, read replicas and the limits of a managed service. depends on the provider
PowerShellAutomate SQL Server and Windows tasks: backups, permissions, checks across many instances.
PythonAutomation and tooling: migrations, reports, checks against many servers, glue for the pipeline.
ITILIncidents, changes and problems in large IT departments; a database change usually passes a change process.
MongoDBA document database: replica sets, sharding, indexes and backups follow rules of their own.
ISO 27001Security controls auditors check: access reviews, encryption, backups, logging and documented procedures.
EnglishThe working language of database documentation, vendor support and most international teams.
GermanAsked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where DBAs work closely with business departments.

DBA ads ask for three groups of skills. The databases come first: SQLRead and tune any query: joins, indexes, execution plans, transactions and locks, in the dialect of your product. in depth and one or two products run in production, such as PostgreSQLRun it in production: replication, backups with point-in-time recovery, vacuum, upgrades and extensions., Oracle DatabaseRun Oracle Database: backup and recovery tools, standby databases, patching and performance reports., MySQLRun MySQL or MariaDB: replication, backups, the storage engine's settings and slow query analysis. or Microsoft SQL Server, and sometimes MongoDBA document database: replica sets, sharding, indexes and backups follow rules of their own. or RedisAn in-memory store for caches and queues; know its persistence options and what is lost on a crash.. The platform comes second: LinuxMost databases run on Linux: storage, memory, file systems, services and the logs that explain a crash. or Windows ServerMicrosoft SQL Server usually runs on Windows Server, with Active Directory for logins and permissions., scripts in BashScripts for backups, checks and routine jobs, written so another DBA can read and rerun them., PowerShellAutomate SQL Server and Windows tasks: backups, permissions, checks across many instances. or PythonAutomation and tooling: migrations, reports, checks against many servers, glue for the pipeline., and managed databases on AzureManaged databases on Azure: service tiers, backups, failover groups and what the provider runs for you. depends on the provider or AWSManaged databases on AWS: instance sizes, snapshots, read replicas and the limits of a managed service. depends on the provider.

Operations come third: change and incident processes, often under ITILIncidents, changes and problems in large IT departments; a database change usually passes a change process., and security controls auditors check, often against ISO 27001Security controls auditors check: access reviews, encryption, backups, logging and documented procedures.. EnglishThe working language of database documentation, vendor support and most international teams. is the language of the documentation and vendor support, and GermanAsked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where DBAs work closely with business departments. is asked for in most ads in German-speaking countries.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Incident rules: CERT-In, India's national computer emergency response team, asks organisations in India to report many kinds of cyber incidents within six hours and to keep system logs for 180 days; DBAs help to meet both. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP) adds rules for personal data.

Database products and certificates

The relational products most ads name are Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL and MySQL with its offshoot MariaDB, with Db2 in some large banks and insurers. Document and key-value stores such as MongoDB and Redis often run beside them, and every large cloud offers managed versions of these products. Each has its own tools and terms; an ad names the products the company runs, and the skills carry over between them more than the tools suggest.

Product makers offer their own certificates, for example Oracle's database administration certifications and Microsoft's Azure Database Administrator Associate. Some ads name them; more ask for years of running the product. No certificate is required by law to work as a DBA.

Your CV for a database administrator job

A DBA CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a lead DBA who wants to know which databases you kept running, how large and how critical they were, and what you did when they failed. Show both: the keywords and the scale.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name each product and version as the ad does: "PostgreSQL", "Oracle 19c", "SQL Server", "MySQL", "Always On", "Data Guard", "RMAN", "replication". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Give the scale in plain terms: the size of the databases, how many instances, the hours of service promised, whether you were on call.
  • Write a vendor exam you are preparing for as "in progress" with the planned month, and keep the product experience next to it.
  • Name the processes you worked in, such as change management or audits, because regulated employers look for them.

Prove each skill

A DBA line proves itself with a risk removed or a figure improved: a restore tested, downtime cut, a query made faster, an audit passed, money saved on the cloud bill.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
PostgreSQLRun it in production: replication, backups with point-in-time recovery, vacuum, upgrades and extensions.Administered PostgreSQL databases.Ran 40 PostgreSQL clusters with streaming replication and point-in-time recovery; tested a full restore every month.
Performance tuningTuned SQL queries.Rewrote the 10 slowest queries of the order system with new indexes; month-end batch fell from 6 hours to 50 minutes.
High availabilitySet up high availability.Built Always On availability groups for the payment database; failover in under 30 seconds, no data lost.
Cloud migrationManaged databases on AWS: instance sizes, snapshots, read replicas and the limits of a managed service. depends on the providerMigrated databases to the cloud.Moved 25 databases to managed cloud services with under an hour of downtime each; hosting cost fell by a third.
AutomationAutomated routine tasks.Automated patching and health checks for 120 instances with Ansible; patch weekends went from two days to four hours.

Write only what you ran or changed yourself. If a team owned the platform, say which databases, which incidents and which changes were yours.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the database administrator jobs in our job search (database administrator, DBA and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a database administrator do?
Keeps databases backed up, available, fast and secure: backups and restores, replication and failover, tuning, patches and upgrades, access control and on-call support.
Which database should I learn?
The one the jobs you want name. SQL and the ideas of backup, replication and tuning carry over between products; the tools differ.
Do I need a certificate?
No law asks for one. Some ads name a vendor certificate; most ask for experience running the product in production.
Is the DBA job disappearing with the cloud?
It is changing. Managed services take routine work, while design, performance, security, automation and cost need more attention.
What should a DBA CV show first?
The products and versions, the size and importance of the databases, and results such as restores tested, downtime cut or queries made faster.
