What an SAP consultant does

An SAP consultant, an SAP Berater in German ads, makes the SAP system fit the way a company works. Most are functional consultants for one area: finance and controlling, purchasing and inventory, sales and billing, production, the warehouse or HR. They run workshops with the business, set the system up through its own settings, write what developers must build where the standard is not enough, test, move the data from the old system, train the key users and stay on after go-live. They work for consultancies and SAP partners, or in-house in the company that runs SAP.

Much of the work today is the move to S/4HANA, SAP's current system. SAP has said that mainstream maintenance for its older ECC system ends in 2027, so many companies plan the change now, either as a fresh start or by converting what they have.

Some titles sit next to this one. An ABAP developer writes code for SAP and is a software developer; an SAP Basis administrator runs the technical system and is not covered here. The IT consultant advises on IT in general, the business analyst works out requirements without one product in mind, and the consultant advises on strategy and organisation. The Salesforce consultant does similar work on a CRM platform. Many accountants, buyers and controllers work in SAP every day; they keep their own roles, and SAP is a skill on their pages. The steps from junior SAP consultant to head of SAP are in the career paths of this role.

Tax and legal rules differ by country, and each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal, tax or career advice.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Projects and rules: SAP is a German software maker, so German ads ask for SAP consultants in almost every industry, and the DSAG, the German-speaking SAP user group, is where many German customers compare notes. German companies have had to accept electronic invoices from other businesses since 2025, and many German SAP finance projects handle that change. German ads say SAP Berater or SAP Inhouse Consultant.

Rules and work: SAP finance consultants in India set up India's GST, the goods and services tax, and its e-invoicing rules for Indian clients. India also has large SAP delivery teams that work for clients abroad, often across time zones.

Local rules shape every SAP finance project, and they are named side by side, each with its place. In the EU, VAT rules and the GDPR apply in every member state; German companies have had to accept electronic invoices since 2025; US public companies keep the controls of the US Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX); UK businesses file VAT under the UK's Making Tax Digital rules; Swiss companies use the Swiss QR-bill; and India has its GST and e-invoicing. A consultant asks the client's tax and legal experts how each rule applies.

One SAP rollout, step by step

  1. Explore: show the standard processes to the business and note where they fit and where they do not.
  2. Design: decide the settings, the few custom pieces and the interfaces, and write them down.
  3. Build and test: configure, have developers build the gaps, then test the processes end to end with key users.
  4. Migrate and go live: load and check the data, switch over on a planned weekend, and support the users closely in the first weeks.
  5. Run: handle change requests, new releases and the next country or company that joins.

The work that decides a project is often the least visible: clean master data, an honest list of what the standard cannot do, and key users who understand the new process before the first month-end close.

Your CV for an SAP consultant job

An SAP consultant's CV first meets software that searches it for the ad's words, then a lead consultant who wants to know which modules you set up, in how many projects, and what you did yourself. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the modules and the system as the ads do: "SAP FI/CO", "SAP MM", "SAP SD", "S/4HANA", "customizing", "data migration". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say which project phases you worked in: workshops, design, build, testing, cutover, hypercare.
  • Name the scope: the number of company codes, countries or plants and the processes, such as procure-to-pay or order-to-cash.
  • An SAP certification exam you are preparing goes on the CV as in progress, with the module and the planned date.

Prove each skill

An SAP line proves itself with a process, what you configured and what changed for the business.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the SAP consultant jobs in our job search (SAP consultants, SAP Berater, SAP functional and module consultants and SAP inhouse consultants), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; a job that names SAP only as a skill counts for its own role. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
