What an IT consultant does

An IT consultant stands between a client's business and its technology. In a typical project the consultant runs workshops to learn how the client works today, writes down what the new system must do, compares it with what a platform does out of the box, configures it or guides the developers, plans the tests and the move of the data, and stays with the users through go-live. Some consultants work for a consultancy and serve several clients a year; others work in-house for one company, or freelance.

Most projects are built on a business platform: SAP, Salesforce, ServiceNow or Microsoft Dynamics for the core processes, and AWS, Azure or Google Cloud underneath. Each is a career of its own, and consultants usually grow deep in one and broad in the rest. The steps from junior IT consultant to principal IT consultant or IT consulting manager are in the career paths of this role.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

17% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 8% are fully remote.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €46,200 to €64,400 a year
  • Mid-level: €54,172 to €69,675 a year
  • Senior: €78,500 to €89,614 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level is StepStone's range for IT consultants; mid-level runs from the low end of Indeed's range for IT-Berater to its average; senior from StepStone's figure for IT consultants with experience to the top of Indeed's range. Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Köln lead Indeed's city figures.

Sources: StepStone: IT consultant (2026), Indeed: IT-Berater (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Titles: German ads say IT-Berater or IT Consultant, often with the platform in the title, such as SAP Berater, and Senior or Principal for the later steps. Many IT-Berater work for a consultancy and travel to the client a few days a week.

Freelance work: many experienced IT consultants in Germany work freelance through agencies. German law looks at the facts of the work to decide whether a freelancer is really employed, called Scheinselbstständigkeit, so clients and agencies ask how the work is set up. This is not legal or tax advice.

Where the work is: in India, IT consultants work for IT services firms that deliver projects for clients abroad and at home, and more and more in global capability centres, the in-house technology centres that international companies run in India.

Platforms, clouds and ways of working

The business platforms are named side by side here because ads name them side by side: SAP for finance, supply chain and production, Salesforce for sales and service, ServiceNow for IT and employee services, and Microsoft Dynamics for both finance and customer work. None is the right answer for every client; the fit depends on the processes, the existing systems and the budget.

The clouds are named the same way: AWS, Azure and Google Cloud each run the platforms above, and the client's existing contracts and skills usually decide. Each vendor offers certifications, and platform ads often name one; no single certificate is needed for the role, and proof of real projects is what interviews test.

IT consultants work as employees of a consultancy, as employees of one company, or freelance. The rules for freelance work differ by country and are named in each country's section. This page describes them in plain words; it is not legal or tax advice.

Your CV for an IT consultant job

An IT consultant's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a practice lead who wants to know which platforms, which project phases and which kinds of clients you have behind you. Give both the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the platform and the module exactly as the ad does, "SAP S/4HANA FI", "Salesforce Service Cloud", "ServiceNow ITSM", and the phases: "requirements", "fit-gap", "data migration", "go-live". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • List projects, not only employers: for each, the industry, the size of the rollout, your role and the phases you led.
  • Write each certification exam you are still preparing as "in progress" with the planned month, and the passed ones with the year.
  • Show the client side as well: workshops you ran, steering groups you reported to, users you trained.

Prove each skill

A consulting line proves itself with a result the client could see: a process that got faster, a go-live on the planned date, a migration with no lost records, a team that took over cleanly.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
SAPAsked in 6% of IT consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know how a module maps a client's processes, where configuration ends and development starts, and what a release changes.SAP experience.Configured order-to-cash in SAP S/4HANA for a mid-sized wholesaler; invoices went out the same day instead of after three.
RequirementsGathered requirements.Ran nine process workshops with sales, finance and warehouse users and turned them into a fit-gap list the client signed off in two weeks.
Data migrationResponsible for data migration.Planned and checked the move of customer and open-order data for three countries; every record reconciled before cutover.
Project leadAsked in 28% of IT consultant ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Plan a rollout with milestones, owners and risks, and keep a client steering group informed every week.Led projects.Led a ServiceNow rollout for an insurer's IT department, team of six, live on the planned weekend and on budget.
TrainingTrained users.Trained key users in each site and wrote the guides they still use; support tickets halved in the first month.

Leave out client names that are not public and say the industry and size instead; practice leads are used to it and read it as discretion.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the IT consultant jobs in our job search (IT consultant and the German titles IT-Berater and IT Consultant), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does an IT consultant do?
Helps a client choose, set up and change its systems: learns the processes, writes the requirements, configures or guides the build, plans tests and data migration, and supports the users at go-live.
Which platform should an IT consultant learn?
The one your clients or target employers use. SAP, Salesforce, ServiceNow and Microsoft Dynamics each have large markets; depth in one and an overview of the rest is the usual shape.
Do I need a certificate to become an IT consultant?
No single certificate is required. Platform certifications help a CV pass a filter, and real project results carry the interview.
Is freelance IT consulting a good idea?
It depends on your experience and the rules of your country, which this page names in each country's section. It is not legal or tax advice.
What should an IT consultant CV show first?
The platforms and modules, the project phases you led, the kinds of clients, and results such as a go-live on time or a migration that reconciled.
