What a security architect does
A security architect, in German a Security Architect or IT-Sicherheitsarchitekt, decides how protection is built in: who may reach which system, how networks are split, what is encrypted and who holds the keys, what is logged and how an attack would be noticed. The work ranges from a company's security reference architecture to reviews of single projects, threat models with teams and decisions on risks that cannot be fixed at once.
The role sits between building and watching. The security engineer builds and runs the controls, and the security analyst watches and answers alerts; the security architect designs what both work with. Security architects review the designs of the solutions architect, and work with the data protection officer where personal data is involved. The steps from security architect to chief security architect are in the career paths of this role.
The rules and bodies a design answers to differ by country; each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.
| Skill | What is expected |
|---|---|
| Security Architecture | Design how a system or a company is protected, from identity and networks to data and logging. |
| Cybersecurity | Know the attacks companies face today and which controls stop, slow or reveal them. |
| Identity and Access Management | Design who and what may reach each system, with least privilege, strong sign-in and regular reviews. |
| Cloud Security | Secure cloud accounts, networks and services by design, with guardrails teams cannot switch off by mistake. |
| ISO 27001 | Know what an ISO 27001 management system asks of the architecture and its evidence. |
| Networking | Read and design networks, firewalls and segments well enough to judge what an attacker can reach. |
| Threat Modelling | Run threat modelling sessions that find the real risks of a design before it is built. |
| Zero Trust | Plan a step-by-step move to zero trust, where every request is checked, wherever it comes from. |
| CISSP | Know the broad ground the CISSP covers, from risk to networks to software security. |
| Azure | Know Azure's security services and tenant structure well enough to design a secure landing zone. |
| AWS | Know AWS's security services and account structure well enough to design a secure landing zone. |
| SABSA | Know SABSA's way of deriving security from business needs, and use it where it helps. |

Where the jobs are, country by country
Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.
Germany
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: €67,600 to €78,000 a year
- Mid-level: €84,714 to €91,500 a year
- Senior: €91,500 to €127,500 a year
Total pay: Payscale gives bonuses of about €1,000 to €15,000 for security architects in Germany, from few salaries. None is certain.
Entry level runs from the low end of StepStone's range to StepStone's starting figure, both estimates; mid-level from Payscale's average to its figure for five to nine years, on few salaries. The senior range runs from that figure to StepStone's estimate for experienced security architects. Indeed's German page for the title mixes in other security jobs and is not used.

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.
Rules and bodies: German designs often follow IT-Grundschutz, the method of the German BSI, the federal office for information security, and operators of critical infrastructure have duties of their own. NIS2, an EU directive that each member state writes into its own law, widens those duties to many more companies. Ads say Security Architect or IT-Sicherheitsarchitekt.

Payscale's Swiss page rests on very few salaries from 2025, so these figures are thin.

Rules and bodies: in Switzerland the federal office for cyber security, BACS, publishes guidance and receives reports; since April 2025 operators of Swiss critical infrastructure must report cyberattacks to it. Rules and bodies: India's CERT-In, the national computer emergency response team, requires many incidents to be reported within six hours and logs to be kept for about six months, which shapes the logging in Indian designs. Many Indian security architects work for clients abroad, in EnglishThe language of most security standards, threat reports and international teams..
The rules and bodies are named side by side, each with its place: ISO 27001 as the international standard for security management; NIS2 in the EU; the German BSI and its IT-Grundschutz; NIST's frameworks in the US; the UK NCSC's guidance; the Swiss federal office BACS; and CERT-In's directions in India.
A design review, step by step
- Understand: what the system does, what data it holds, who uses it and what it connects to.
- Model the threats: who might attack it, how, and what would hurt the business most.
- Choose controls: identity, segmentation, encryption, logging and the rest, sized to the risk.
- Agree and record: with the team and the owner, including any risk that is accepted for now.
- Follow up: check the build, the tests and the open risks until they are closed.
Much of the day is advice: a team asking whether a design is safe enough, an owner asking what a risk means, an auditor asking for evidence. A good security architect is trusted because the advice is proportionate, not because every request gets a no.
Your CV for a security architect job
A security architect's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a head of security who wants to see what you designed, which risks you reduced and how teams took it up. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the work in the ads' words: "security architecture", "zero trust", "identity and access management", "threat modelling", "cloud security", and the standards you worked with. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say what you protected: a bank's payment systems, a cloud estate, a factory network.
- Show results in risk and business terms: attack paths closed, audit findings cleared, incidents contained.
- Mention a certification you have not completed as in progress, with the exam date if you have one.
Prove each skill
A security line proves itself with a system, a control and a risk that went down.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| IdentityDesign who and what may reach each system, with least privilege, strong sign-in and regular reviews. | Worked on IAM. | Designed sign-in and access reviews for four thousand staff; standing admin rights fell to a handful. |
| Zero trustPlan a step-by-step move to zero trust, where every request is checked, wherever it comes from. | Implemented zero trust. | Led the move from a flat network to checked access per application across three sites. |
| Threat modelsRun threat modelling sessions that find the real risks of a design before it is built. | Did threat modelling. | Ran threat models with twelve product teams; two design flaws were fixed before launch. |
| CloudSecure cloud accounts, networks and services by design, with guardrails teams cannot switch off by mistake. | Secured the cloud. | Designed the guardrails of the company's cloud accounts; no public storage bucket since. |
| AuditKnow what an ISO 27001 management system asks of the architecture and its evidence. | Supported audits. | Mapped the architecture to ISO 27001 controls; the certification audit raised no major finding. |
Keep confidential details out: no weaknesses that are still open, no internal network details.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the security architect jobs in our job search (security, cyber security, information security and IT security architects, and the German title IT-Sicherheitsarchitekt), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; security engineers and analysts are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a security architect do?
- Designs how systems and a company are protected, reviews new designs and decides with owners how to handle risks.
- How is it different from a security engineer?
- The engineer builds and runs the controls; the architect decides which controls the systems need and how they fit together.
- Do I need the CISSP?
- Many ads name it, though no certification is asked for in every ad; designs you can explain count for more in an interview.
- How do people become security architects?
- Usually after years as a security engineer, a network or cloud engineer, or a security analyst.
- What should a security architect's CV show first?
- The systems you protected, the designs you set and the risks they reduced.
