What an environmental engineer does
An environmental engineer works where a project or a plant meets air, water, soil and the people nearby. Some design treatment plants and pollution controls; some prepare the studies and permits a new road, plant or wind farm needs; some run a site's environmental management and monitoring. Many work for engineering consultancies, others for industry, utilities or public authorities.
The role sits between three others. The sustainability manager reports a company's effect on climate and society and sets its targets; the environmental engineer works on the permits, the plants and the measurements behind them. The civil engineer designs the structures that need the permits, and the process engineer the plants whose emissions are measured. In German the title is Umweltingenieur. The steps from junior environmental engineer to head of environment are in the career paths of this role.
The rules are set in each place and each country's section names its own: the EIA Directive for impact assessments in the EU, the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) for plant permits in Germany, NEPA reviews and EPA permit programmes in the US, the Environmental Permitting Regulations in England, the Swiss Environmental Protection Act and the EIA Notification in India. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice on any permit.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Where the jobs are, country by country
Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.
Germany
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: €42,000 to €55,174 a year
- Mid-level: €55,237 to €61,351 a year
- Senior: €61,351 to €68,141 a year
Total pay: neither German source gives a figure for bonuses; many environmental engineers in public authorities are paid on a public pay scale instead.
Entry level runs from StepStone's starting figure for Umweltingenieure to Gehalt.de's figure for those with under three years of experience; mid-level from Gehalt.de's lower quarter to its middle figure. The senior range is an estimate too, from that middle figure to the upper quarter. Both German sites give estimates and say nothing of how many salaries they rest on.

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.
Rules and titles: in Germany, plants that may harm the environment need a permit under the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG), and larger projects an environmental impact assessment (UVP) under the German UVPG, which applies the EU EIA Directive. Ads say Umweltingenieur, Ingenieur Umwelttechnik or name the field, such as Immissionsschutz or Altlasten, and many come from public authorities and engineering consultancies.
Language: most German ads ask for GermanAsked for in most German ads, where permits, authorities and site teams work in German., and some for EnglishThe working language of international consultancies, standards and many reports. too.
United States
Pay (Base salary)

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment. Federal projects go through NEPA, the US law that asks agencies to study a project's environmental effects, and plants and treatment works need permits under EPA programmes for air and water, often run by the states. Some US environmental engineers hold a Professional Engineer licence; ads that sign off designs may ask for it.
United Kingdom
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: £24,000 to £35,347 a year
- Mid-level: £35,347 to £49,000 a year
- Senior: £47,560 to £62,738 a year
Total pay: neither UK source gives a bonus figure for environmental engineers.
Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's UK range to Indeed's average for environmental engineer ads; mid-level from that average to Payscale's upper tenth; senior across Indeed's range for senior environmental engineer ads, from its average to its top. Rules: in England, the Environment Agency issues environmental permits under the UK Environmental Permitting Regulations, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulators. Larger projects need an environmental impact assessment under the UK's planning rules. Chartered status through a body such as CIWEM is welcome in many UK ads, not required.
Switzerland
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: CHF 70,000 to CHF 74,741 a year
- Mid-level: CHF 80,400 to CHF 85,138 a year
- Senior: CHF 85,138 to CHF 100,308 a year
Total pay: neither Swiss source gives a bonus figure for environmental engineers.
Entry level runs from the lowest salary Lohnanalyse lists to the lower end of the middle half Lohncheck gives; mid-level from Lohnanalyse's middle figure to its average; senior from that average to the upper end of Lohncheck's middle half. Lohnanalyse rests on few salaries entered by its visitors up to 2024, so the Swiss figures are thin.

Rules: in India, projects in listed sectors need environmental clearance under the EIA Notification of 2006, and plants need consent to establish and to operate from the State Pollution Control Board under India's water and air laws. Consultancies that prepare these studies hire many environmental engineers.
A permit, step by step
- Scope: what the project or the change does, which rules apply and what the authority will want to see, agreed early in a meeting with it where that is possible.
- Baseline: the state of air, water, soil, noise and nature before the project, from existing data and new surveys.
- Effects and measures: what the project changes, modelled where needed, and the measures that avoid or reduce harm.
- Application: the reports, drawings and forms, then the questions of the authority and, for larger projects, the public.
- Compliance: once granted, the monitoring, records and reports that show the site keeps its conditions, year after year.
Around the permits come the plants and the problems: a treatment step that fails its limits, a spill to report, a contaminated site to clean up before building. A good environmental engineer is trusted by the authority for complete, honest reports and by the project for permits on time.
Your CV for an environmental engineer job
An environmental engineer's CV is read by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and then by a project or environment manager who wants to know which permits and studies you delivered, for which kinds of project, and with what result at the authority. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the work as the ad does: "environmental permitting", "impact assessment", "wastewater", "air quality", "contaminated land", "ISO 14001", and the tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say what kind of project or site: industrial plants, infrastructure, energy, waste or water, and its size in words such as "a regional wastewater works".
- Show results the way the work is judged: permits granted, conditions met, limits kept, clean-ups signed off.
- Name a chartership or licence in progress, such as chartered status in the UK or the PE licence in the US, as in progress with the month you expect it.
Prove each skill
An environmental line proves itself with an outcome an authority or a client accepted: a permit, a study, a site closed.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| PermitPrepare permit applications, answer the authority's questions and keep a site within its permit conditions. | Prepared permit applications. | Prepared the emissions permit application for a biomass boiler; granted at the first submission with no extra studies. |
| Impact assessmentPlan and write the parts of an impact assessment: baseline, effects, mitigation and monitoring. | Worked on EIAs. | Wrote the water and soil chapters of an impact assessment for a logistics park and answered the authority's questions. |
| Treatment plantDesign or improve treatment steps for drinking water, process water or wastewater, and check their results. | Improved wastewater treatment. | Changed the dosing and aeration of an industrial treatment plant; it has met its discharge limits every month since. |
| RemediationInvestigate soil and groundwater, judge the risk and plan a clean-up the authority accepts. | Managed site investigations. | Planned the soil and groundwater investigation of a former depot and the clean-up the authority signed off. |
| Management systemRun or audit an environmental management system: aspects, legal register, objectives and audits. | Supported ISO 14001. | Rebuilt a site's legal register and audit plan; the certification audit closed with no major finding. |
Keep clients and confidential data out: name the type of project, not the client, and no figures they have not published.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the environmental engineer jobs in our job search (environmental engineers and consultants, and the German titles Umweltingenieur and Ingenieur Umwelttechnik), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; sustainability manager jobs are counted on their own page. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an environmental engineer do?
- Prepares permits and impact assessments, designs or improves treatment and pollution control, and monitors air, water and soil so projects and plants keep within the rules.
- Is it the same as a sustainability manager?
- No. The sustainability manager reports and steers a company's climate and social effects; the environmental engineer works on permits, plants and measurements. The two often work together.
- Which degree do employers ask for?
- Environmental, civil, chemical or process engineering, or a related science; the ads name the field.
- Do I need a licence or chartership?
- Rarely to be hired. Some countries offer one, such as the PE licence in the US or chartered status in the UK, and roles that sign off designs may ask for it.
- What should an environmental engineer's CV show first?
- The permits and studies you delivered, the kinds of project and what the authority or client accepted.
