What a civil engineer does
A civil engineer turns a need, such as a building, a bridge or a drainage network, into a design that is safe, buildable and affordable, and then helps see it built. On the design side the work is loads, calculations, drawings and models, coordinated with architects and other engineers; on the client or contractor side it is tenders, cost, programme and supervision on site. Many engineers specialise: structures, geotechnics, transport, water or construction management.
Site work is where the role meets others. In German ads the site manager is often the Bauleiter, a job some civil engineers take on; larger schemes are run by a project manager, and the inspection and test plans that prove the work was built right follow the methods of the quality manager. The steps from graduate engineer to director are in the career paths of this role.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.
| Skill | Share of ads | What is expected |
|---|---|---|
| BIM | 4% | Work in a shared building information model: your discipline's model, clash checks and coordinated drawings. |
| AutoCAD | 19% | Produce and check drawings: plans, sections and details that a contractor can build from. |
| Structural Analysis | 12% | Model a structure, apply loads and check members and connections, and know when a result looks wrong. |
| Project management | 38% | Plan design or site work: scope, programme, cost, risks and the people involved. |
| Site Supervision | 8% | Check on site that work follows the design, record defects and agree fixes with the contractor. |
| Quality Management | 12% | Inspection and test plans, records and audits that show the work was built as designed. |
| Driving licence | 12% | Many site and field roles need one, because sites are spread out and visits are frequent. |
| Communication skills | 35% | Explain a design, a risk or a change clearly to clients, contractors, authorities and the public. |
| Teamwork | 31% | Work with architects, other engineers, contractors and clients towards one finished project. |
| English | 35% | The language of international projects, many codes' commentaries and software manuals. |
| German | 42% | Asked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, for authorities, sites and contracts. |

Titles and codes: in India, the IEI, the Institution of Engineers (India), awards the title chartered engineer to its corporate members, and some cities in India keep their own registers of structural engineers. Indian designs follow the codes of the BIS, the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Codes, licences and chartered titles
Each place has its own titles for engineers who may sign designs or lead work, and they are named here side by side as facts: the Bauvorlageberechtigung and chamber membership in Germany, the PE licence in the US, CEng through the ICE or the IStructE in the UK, and the chartered engineer of the IEI in India. In Switzerland the SIA standards set the codes, and some cantons keep a register. Each section below says more for its country.
Most graduate and mid-level roles need none of these titles yet; ads often name one as a later step or ask that a senior engineer holds it. Requirements change and differ by state, canton and type of work, so check them with the body that grants the title. This page describes them for orientation and is not legal or professional advice.
Your CV for a civil engineer job
A civil engineer's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a senior engineer who wants to know which projects you worked on, in which stage, and what you designed, checked or supervised yourself. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the work and tools as the ad does: "structural design", "BIM", "site supervision", "tendering", the codes you designed to and the software you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- For each project give the type, the stage and your part: design, checking, tender or site.
- Write a licence or chartered title you are working towards as "in progress", with the stage you have reached, next to the experience it rests on.
- Add a short project list for senior roles: the client type, the structure and your role, without confidential values.
Prove each skill
An engineering line proves itself with a structure that stands, a problem solved or a cost or time saved: a design that passed checking first time, a clash found before site, a variation avoided.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Structural designAsked in 12% of civil engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Model a structure, apply loads and check members and connections, and know when a result looks wrong. | Performed structural calculations. | Designed the concrete frame of a four-storey school to the Eurocodes; the checking engineer accepted it without changes. |
| BIM coordinationAsked in 4% of civil engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Work in a shared building information model: your discipline's model, clash checks and coordinated drawings. | Worked with BIM. | Coordinated the structural model with the building services model; clash detection removed dozens of conflicts before construction. |
| Site supervisionAsked in 8% of civil engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Check on site that work follows the design, record defects and agree fixes with the contractor. | Supervised construction work. | Supervised the foundations of a road bridge; a weak soil layer was spotted early and the piles were redesigned within a week. |
| TenderingPrepare tender documents and bills of quantities, or price and answer a tender from the other side. | Prepared tender documents. | Wrote the tender package for a drainage scheme; contractors priced it with few questions and no claims followed. |
| Embodied carbon | Considered sustainability. | Cut the embodied carbon of a car park design by changing the slab system; the client used it in its green building rating. |
Keep confidential figures out: no contract values or client names without permission.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the civil engineer jobs in our job search (civil, structural, geotechnical and bridge engineers, and the German titles Bauingenieur, Statiker and Tragwerksplaner), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a civil engineer do?
- Designs and helps build structures and networks such as buildings, bridges, roads, railways and drainage, from calculations and drawings to tenders and site supervision.
- Is a Bauingenieur the same as a civil engineer?
- Yes: Bauingenieur is the German title. Statiker and Tragwerksplaner are structural engineers, and Bauleiter usually means a site manager.
- Do I need a licence to work as a civil engineer?
- Most first roles do not. Signing designs for the public or for building permits needs a title in many places, such as the PE licence in the US; each section above says more, and nothing here is legal or professional advice.
- Which software should a civil engineer know?
- A drawing or BIM tool and an analysis tool; ads name several side by side, and the method matters more than the product.
- What should a civil engineer's CV show first?
- Your projects with their type, stage and your own part, the codes and tools you used, and the results.
