What a mechatronics engineer does
A mechatronics engineer makes moving systems work as a whole. Sensors measure, a controller decides, and actuators such as motors, valves and servo drives move the machine; the engineer chooses these parts, connects them, writes or specifies the control, and tests the result until the machine runs safely and as specified. The work goes from requirements and design through simulation and commissioning to fixing faults in the field.
The job sits between several others. The mechanical engineer designs the structure and the moving parts, the electrical engineer the power and the wiring, and the embedded software engineer the code on the controller boards; the mechatronics engineer brings these together and owns the interfaces between them. In German ads the title is Mechatronikingenieur or Ingenieur Mechatronik. A Mechatroniker is a different job: a skilled trade learned in an apprenticeship, which this page does not cover. The steps from junior engineer to lead and beyond are in the career paths of this role.
Machines must be safe before they are sold, and the rules differ by place: in the EU the Machinery Regulation and CE marking, in the UK UKCA marking, in the US OSHA and its standards, and in Switzerland the Swiss Machinery Ordinance, which follows the EU's rules. Each is named here side by side and without ranking; this page describes the job and is not legal advice.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

- Mid-level: €56,644 to €64,526 a year
- Senior: €66,622 to €73,504 a year
Total pay: neither German source gives a bonus figure for mechatronics engineers.
Entry level runs from the low end of StepStone's range to the Gehalt site's figure for under three years of work; mid-level from that site's lower quarter to its middle figure; senior from its figure for over nine years to its upper quarter, both salary sites' estimates that do not say how many salaries they rest on. Payscale's German page rests on eight salaries and is not used.
Checked 29 Oct 2026: both pages still name mechatronics engineers (Mechatronikingenieur/in; Ingenieur/-in Mechatronik) and show the same figures, so nothing changed. Neither source is Indeed.

United States
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: $59,000 to $88,258 a year
- Mid-level: $88,623 to $115,859 a year
- Senior: $115,859 to $148,000 a year
Total pay: Payscale gives mechatronics engineers bonuses of about $250 to $14,000 and profit sharing of about $6,000 to $13,000 a year.
Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's mechatronics engineer range to its figure for one to four years of work; mid-level from its average to Indeed's average for engineers in general; senior from that average to Payscale's upper tenth. Payscale rests on few salaries for this title.
Changed 29 Oct 2026: Indeed US no longer has a mechatronics engineer page and sends that address to its general Engineer page, so the mid-level and senior breakpoint $115,859 is general engineer pay (average $115,859, range $68,027 to $197,322, about 20.6k salaries, updated 19 Oct 2026), not mechatronics pay. Payscale's mechatronics page (51 salaries, June 2026) is read again and unchanged. No other current US source names mechatronics engineers with a range, so the figure stays as a rough guide.
Sources: Payscale (Jun 2026), Indeed: engineer (general) (Oct 2026).
Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.
How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment. Machine safety follows OSHA, the US workplace safety agency, and standards such as NFPA 79 for the electrical equipment of industrial machines.
United Kingdom
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: £30,000 to £40,985 a year
- Mid-level: £40,985 to £64,000 a year
- Senior: £43,554 to £69,221 a year
Total pay: Payscale gives UK controls engineers, the closest title with enough salaries, bonuses of about £750 to £7,000 a year.
Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's controls engineer range to Indeed's average for engineers in general; mid-level from there to Payscale's controls engineer upper tenth; senior from Payscale's controls engineer average to the top of Indeed's range for engineers in general. Payscale's UK mechatronics page rests on six salaries and is not used.
Changed 29 Oct 2026: Indeed UK no longer has a mechatronics engineer page and sends that address to its general Engineer page, so the £40,985 breakpoint and the £69,221 top are general engineer pay (average £40,985, range £25,420 to £69,221, about 19.3k salaries, updated 19 Oct 2026), not mechatronics pay. Payscale UK's mechatronics page (6 salaries, average £37,000, middle half £23k to £47k, updated 5 May 2026) is too thin to replace it; no other current UK source gives a mechatronics range with enough salaries. Read the ranges as a rough guide.
Sources: Indeed: engineer (general) (Oct 2026), Payscale: controls engineer (Apr 2026).
Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.
Rules: machines placed on the market in Great Britain carry UKCA marking, the UK's own conformity mark, while CE marking under EU rules is also accepted for many products. Some UK engineers register as Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council of the UK.
Switzerland
Pay (Base salary)
- Entry level: CHF 75,100 to CHF 91,300 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives Swiss mechanical engineers bonuses of about CHF 700 to CHF 17,000 a year; no Swiss source gives one for mechatronics engineers.
No Swiss source covers mechatronics engineers alone, so these are engineers' figures. Entry level runs from Lohncheck's figure for engineers with under two years of work to its middle figure for engineers; mid-level from there to its figure for specialists; senior from there to the upper tenth of Payscale's range for Swiss mechanical engineers.
Checked 29 Oct 2026: Lohncheck's engineer page is unchanged (middle half CHF 75,300 to 108,300, middle figure 91,300, under two years 75,100, specialist 101,300, Q1 2026). No Swiss page covers mechatronics engineers with a degree: Lohncheck's mechatronics page is for the apprenticeship Mechatroniker (EFZ) and is not used. No Indeed page is cited.
Sources: Lohncheck: engineer (Q1 2026), Payscale: mechanical engineer (Sep 2026).
Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.
Rules: the Swiss Machinery Ordinance follows the EU's machinery rules, so Swiss machines are built to the same standards. Changed 29 Oct 2026: Indeed India no longer has a mechatronics engineer page and sends that address to its general Engineer page, so the senior level is general engineer pay (average ₹6.96 lakh, range ₹3.33 to ₹14.57 lakh), not mechatronics pay. No other current India source gives a senior mechatronics range; read the senior level as a rough guide.
Sources: Payscale: automation engineer (Aug 2026), Payscale: mechatronics engineer (Dec 2023), Indeed: engineer (general) (Oct 2026).

Where the roles are: in India, mechatronics engineers work in automotive, electronics and machine building, and many teams design machines for export, so they work to the standards of the countries where the machines are sold.
A machine module, step by step
- Requirements: what the module must do, how fast and how precisely, and the safety functions it needs from the risk assessment.
- Concept: the sensors, actuators and drives, how the mechanics move, and where the control runs.
- Design: CAD models with the mechanical designers, wiring diagrams with the electrical team, and the control program or its specification.
- Simulation and test: models of the motion and the control, sometimes a digital twin, a computer model of the machine, then tests on the bench.
- Commissioning: the module built into the machine, tuned, tested with the customer and handed over with its documentation.
Around new designs come the steady tasks: faults in machines already running, changes customers ask for, parts that are no longer made, and improvements from what service technicians report. A good mechatronics engineer is trusted on the shop floor because the fixes work the first time.
Your CV for a mechatronics engineer job
A mechatronics engineer's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by an engineering lead who wants to see which systems you made work and what you owned. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the work and tools as the ad does: "PLC", "control engineering", "commissioning", "functional safety", and the PLC and CAD tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say what you built: the kind of machine or product, its industry, and your part in it.
- Give your results the way your team measured them, such as cycle time, availability or faults fixed, without confidential figures.
- Name a qualification in progress, such as a degree or a safety course, as in progress with the month you expect to finish.
Prove each skill
A mechatronics line proves itself with a machine that runs better: a faster cycle, a fault that stopped, a module commissioned on time.

How we read our data
- The jobs: the mechatronics engineer jobs in our job search (mechatronics engineers and the German titles Mechatronikingenieur and Ingenieur Mechatronik), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; Mechatroniker ads, a skilled trade, are not counted here, and mechanical and electrical engineer jobs are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a mechatronics engineer do?
- Designs, builds into service and fixes systems where mechanics, electronics and control software work together, such as machines and robots.
- Is a mechatronics engineer the same as a Mechatroniker?
- No. In German-speaking countries a Mechatroniker is a skilled trade learned in an apprenticeship; a mechatronics engineer usually holds a degree and designs the systems.
- Do I need to program?
- Usually yes: PLC programming in most roles, and in some C++ or Python where the control runs on a computer.
- Is it closer to mechanical or electrical engineering?
- It is both, with control on top; many engineers come from one side and learn the other.
- What should a mechatronics engineer's CV show first?
- The machines or products you made work, your part in them and what improved.
