What a process engineer does

A process engineer owns how a product is made, not the product itself. On a new line that means the flow sheet, the balances, the equipment sizes and the start-up; on a running plant it means yield, energy use, quality, capacity and safety, day after day. The work moves between the desk, the control room and the plant floor.

The role sits next to two others. The mechanical engineer designs the machines and the equipment the process runs in; the quality manager runs the system that proves each batch meets its specification. In German-speaking countries the field is called Verfahrenstechnik and the engineers Verfahrensingenieure. The steps from junior process engineer to head of process engineering are in the career paths of this role.

The safety and process rules differ by place, and each country's section names its own: ATEX for explosive atmospheres in the EU, OSHA's Process Safety Management standard (PSM) in the US, COMAH in the UK. HAZOP, a structured team review of what can go wrong at each part of a plant, is a method used everywhere, not a law. This page describes the work; it is not professional advice on any plant.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

12% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 6% are fully remote.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €48,300 to €65,027 a year
  • Mid-level: €67,059 to €75,483 a year
  • Senior: €75,483 to €84,964 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives process engineers in Germany bonuses of about €1,000 to €9,000 a year.

Entry level runs from StepStone's starting figure for engineers in Verfahrenstechnik to Gehalt.de's figure for those with under three years of experience; mid-level from Gehalt.de's lower quarter to its middle figure. The senior range is an estimate as well, from that middle figure to the upper quarter. Both German sites give estimates and say nothing of how many salaries they rest on.

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

Titles: German ads say Verfahrensingenieur, Prozessingenieur or Ingenieur Verfahrenstechnik, after the German name of the field, Verfahrenstechnik. A Verfahrensmechaniker is a skilled trade learned in an apprenticeship, not this role. Plants with explosive atmospheres work to ATEX, the EU rules for equipment and workplaces where gas or dust can ignite, which Germany applies through its own workplace safety rules.

Language: most German ads ask for GermanAsked in 60% of process engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Asked for in most German ads, where plant teams, permits and operating instructions are in German., and many for EnglishAsked in 69% of process engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The working language of most international plants, licensors and equipment suppliers. as well.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment, often with shift cover or on-call duty during start-ups. Plants that handle large amounts of hazardous chemicals fall under OSHA's Process Safety Management standard (PSM) in the US, and many also under the EPA's risk management rules; process engineers write and update much of the paperwork both ask for.

United Kingdom

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: £27,000 to £36,804 a year
  • Mid-level: £36,804 to £42,417 a year
  • Senior: £51,145 to £75,000 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives UK process engineers and senior process engineers bonuses of about £1,000 to £5,000 a year.

Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's process engineer range to its average; mid-level from that average to Indeed's average for process engineer ads; senior from Payscale's senior process engineer average to the upper tenth of that range, a page that rests on few salaries.

Sources: Payscale: process engineer (Jul 2026), Payscale: senior process engineer (Aug 2026), Indeed (Oct 2026).

Safety rules: in the UK, sites that hold large amounts of dangerous substances fall under the COMAH regulations, and DSEAR covers explosive atmospheres at work. Some UK process engineers work towards Chartered Engineer status through a professional body such as IChemE; many ads list it as welcome, not required.

Switzerland

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: CHF 66,000 to CHF 80,202 a year
  • Mid-level: CHF 80,202 to CHF 89,821 a year
  • Senior: CHF 89,821 to CHF 112,000 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives Swiss process engineers bonuses of about CHF 2,000 to 20,000 a year.

Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's Swiss range to the lower end of the middle half Lohncheck gives for process engineers; mid-level from there to Payscale's average; senior from that average to Payscale's upper tenth. Payscale's page rests on few salaries and there is no Swiss source for senior process engineers alone, so the Swiss figures are a rough guide.

Sources: Payscale (Aug 2026), Lohncheck: Prozessingenieur (Q1 2026).

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

Industry and safety: in Switzerland much of the work is in pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals, and plants follow the Swiss major accidents ordinance and the guidance of SUVA, the Swiss accident insurer, on explosion protection. Many Swiss roles ask for German or French next to EnglishAsked in 69% of process engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The working language of most international plants, licensors and equipment suppliers..

Safety rules: in India, factories are covered by the Factories Act and state factory rules, and plants that store petroleum, explosives or gases under pressure need licences from PESO, the Indian Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation. Refineries, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals and speciality chemicals employ many process engineers.

A plant change, step by step

  1. Problem: a yield that drifts, a bottleneck, an energy bill, a new product or a customer complaint; first the data, then the plant walk.
  2. Options: balances and a simulation of two or three ways to fix it, each with its cost, risk and effect on quality.
  3. Review: the change goes through management of change, a safety review of what it touches and, in regulated plants, the quality team.
  4. Trial and start-up: a trial on the plant with the operators, then the new settings, procedures and P&IDs.
  5. Hold the gain: control charts and a check after some months, so the plant does not drift back.

Around the changes come the larger projects: a new line, a scale-up from pilot plant to full size, a shutdown with many jobs to plan. A good process engineer is trusted by operators for changes that work at three in the morning, and by managers for numbers that hold.

Your CV for a process engineer job

A process engineer's CV is read by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and then by a plant or engineering manager who wants to know which processes you ran, what you changed and what it did to yield, cost or safety. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as the ad does: "process optimisation", "scale-up", "HAZOP", "process simulation", "commissioning", and the simulators you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say what kind of plant: continuous or batch, chemical, pharmaceutical, food, refinery or materials, and its scale in words such as "a multi-product batch plant".
  • Show results as the plant measured them: yield, energy per tonne, batch time, waste, incidents.
  • Name a chartership or licence in progress, such as Chartered Engineer in the UK, as in progress with the month you expect it.

Prove each skill

A plant line proves itself with a before and after: the setting you changed, the trial you ran, the figure that moved and stayed moved.

Leave out the plant's secrets: no recipes, licensor data or exact capacities of your employer.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the process engineer jobs in our job search (process engineers, process development and chemical process engineers, and the German titles Verfahrensingenieur, Prozessingenieur and Ingenieur Verfahrenstechnik), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; the trade of Verfahrensmechaniker is not counted. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a process engineer do?
Designs, starts up and improves the steps of a production process, with balances, simulations, trials and safety reviews, so the plant makes more, better and more safely.
Is a process engineer the same as a chemical engineer?
Mostly the same training. Chemical engineering is the degree; process engineer is the job title in plants of many industries, food and pharmaceuticals included.
Which simulator should I learn?
The one the plants you apply to use; Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, CHEMCAD and DWSIM all teach the same method of balances and models.
Do I need a licence or chartership?
Rarely to be hired. Some countries offer one, such as the PE licence in the US or Chartered Engineer in the UK, and some senior roles ask for it.
What should a process engineer's CV show first?
The plants and processes you worked on, the changes you made and the figures that moved.
