What an auditor does
An external auditor examines a company's annual accounts from the outside. The team learns the business, finds where the numbers could be wrong, tests the controls that should stop errors, gathers evidence for the important figures, and at the end the partner signs an opinion: the accounts give a true and fair view, or they do not, and why. Most auditors start as audit assistants in an audit practice and work through several clients a year.
Audits in most countries follow the International Standards on Auditing, the ISAs, set by an international board, or national rules built on them; audits of US listed companies have standards of their own. The work is moving from paper samples to data: whole ledgers are analysed, and IT controls matter as much as signatures. The steps from audit assistant to audit partner are in the career paths of this role.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.
| Skill | Share of ads | What is expected |
|---|---|---|
| Excel | 2% | Reconcile, sample and analyse large extracts quickly and leave a file a reviewer can follow step by step. |
| Financial Reporting | 5% | Read and test financial statements under IFRS or the local rules: revenue, estimates, provisions and the notes. |
| Bookkeeping | 1% | Double entry, accruals, reconciliations and closing entries: the ground every audit test stands on. |
| SAP | 3% | Find your way through the client's ledger: journals, master data, users and the reports an audit asks for. |
| Data Analysis | 3% | Test whole populations of journals or payments instead of samples, and explain what the exceptions mean. |
| Controlling | 3% | Budgets, cost accounting and reporting, so you can judge the client's own numbers and forecasts. |
| Tax | 0% | Enough to audit the tax lines: current and deferred tax, and when to ask the tax specialists. |
| Power BI | 2% | Show audit analyses as dashboards a manager can read, from data you can trace back to the ledger. |
| Communication skills | 13% | Ask clients for evidence clearly, explain findings without blame, and write points a board can act on. |
| Problem solving | 5% | Follow a difference to its cause and judge whether it matters, instead of stopping at the first answer. |
| Independent work | 23% | Plan your own work on site, keep deadlines in busy season and know when to ask your senior. |
| ISO 27001 | 7% | Security controls an IT audit relies on: access, changes, backups and logging, documented and tested. |
| Cybersecurity | 4% | IT risks in the audit: who can change the ledger, how changes are approved and what a breach would touch. |
| English | 52% | The language of the international standards, group audits and most cross-border clients. |
| German | 59% | Asked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where the client's records are kept in German. |

The NFRA, India's national financial reporting authority, oversees the audits of listed and large companies.
Regulated titles and neighbouring paths
Signing a statutory audit opinion is a regulated job in most countries, and the title that allows it differs: Wirtschaftsprüfer in Germany, CPA in the US, a responsible individual who usually holds the ACA or the ACCA in the UK, a licensed audit expert in Switzerland and a Chartered Accountant in India. Each route takes years of exams and supervised work, and most people start as audit assistants while they study.
This page describes these routes in plain words. It is not professional advice about qualifications: the professional body or regulator of your country sets the rules that apply to you, and they change.
Internal audit and IT audit are neighbouring paths. Internal auditors work inside one organisation and report on its risks and controls to the board, under the Global Internal Audit Standards, an international set of standards; IT auditors examine systems, access and IT controls, often with the CISA certification of ISACA. Many external auditors move into one of them after some years. These pages follow the external audit ladder.
Your CV for an auditor job
An auditor's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by an audit manager who wants to know which clients and industries you audited, which areas you owned and how far you got with the professional exams. Show both: the keywords and the reach.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the frameworks and areas as the ad does: "IFRS", "HGB" for German audits, "ISA", "internal controls", "revenue", "inventory", "group audit". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Give the reach in plain terms: the kind and size of clients, the industries, listed or not, and the areas you were responsible for.
- Write each professional exam or module you are still taking as "in progress" with the planned date, and the ones you passed with the year.
- Name data analytics and IT audit work, because many teams now look for it first.
Prove each skill
An audit line proves itself with an area you owned, a finding that mattered, or a deadline met with a smaller team: what you tested, what you found and what changed.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Financial reportingAsked in 5% of auditor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Read and test financial statements under IFRS or the local rules: revenue, estimates, provisions and the notes. | Audited financial statements. | Owned revenue and receivables on the audits of four manufacturing groups reporting under IFRS; two adjustments agreed with management. |
| Data analyticsAsked in 3% of auditor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Test whole populations of journals or payments instead of samples, and explain what the exceptions mean. | Used data analytics. | Tested all journal entries of a retail client with a data tool instead of a sample; found unapproved manual postings at month end. |
| Internal controls | Tested internal controls. | Walked through and tested the purchase-to-pay controls of three subsidiaries; raised six points in the management letter, all fixed the next year. |
| Audit seniorAsked in 1% of auditor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Lead an audit team: plan the work, review files, coach juniors and keep the client relationship. | Led audit teams. | Led the on-site team of four on a group audit with eleven components; signed off three weeks before the deadline. |
| ExcelAsked in 2% of auditor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Reconcile, sample and analyse large extracts quickly and leave a file a reviewer can follow step by step. | Advanced Excel skills. | Built the inventory roll-forward model the team now reuses on every manufacturing client. |
Write only what you did yourself, and keep client names out unless they are public; the industry and size say enough.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the auditor jobs in our job search (auditor and the German titles Wirtschaftsprüfer, Revisor and Prüfer), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an auditor do?
- Plans and carries out the audit of a company's financial statements: understands the business and its risks, tests controls and figures, and reports whether the accounts give a true and fair view.
- Do I need a professional title to work as an auditor?
- Not to start. Audit assistants work while they study; signing an audit opinion needs the regulated title of the country. This is not professional advice; the body of your country sets the rules.
- What is the difference between external and internal audit?
- External auditors are independent of the company and report to its owners; internal auditors work for the company and report to its board on risks and controls.
- Is audit being replaced by software?
- The work is changing: data tools test whole ledgers, and the judgement on estimates, fraud risk and the opinion stays with people.
- What should an auditor CV show first?
- The clients and areas you audited, the frameworks, your exam progress, and results such as findings that mattered or teams you led.
