What a financial analyst does

A financial analyst answers questions with figures: will we hit the plan, what does this investment return, why did margins fall, what happens if prices rise. Inside a company, most analysts work in FP&A, financial planning and analysis: they build the forecast, compare it with the actual figures, model scenarios, and prepare the reports leadership decides with.

Some financial analysts work on the investment side instead, in banks, asset managers or research firms, where they value companies and recommend whether to invest. The tools overlap: three-statement models, discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation, and ExcelAsked in 26% of financial analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Build models others can audit: three statements, scenarios, lookups, pivot tables and checks that flag errors.. Titles include Financial Analyst, FP&A Analyst, Business Finance Analyst and, in German ads, Finanzanalyst. The ladder runs to senior analyst, FP&A manager, head of FP&A and finance director; see the career paths.

Your CV for a financial analyst job

A financial analyst's CV passes the hiring software on the words of the ad, then a finance manager who looks for one thing: analysis that changed a decision. Write for both.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work the way ads name it: "FP&A", "forecasting", "financial modelling", "variance analysis", "business cases", "DCF", "management reporting". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the tools with what you did in them: ExcelAsked in 26% of financial analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Build models others can audit: three statements, scenarios, lookups, pivot tables and checks that flag errors. models, Power BIAsked in 6% of financial analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Build the dashboards of the forecast and the KPIs, from one data model the whole team uses. dashboards, SQLAsked in 6% of financial analyst ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Pull and join data from the ERP or the data warehouse yourself: sales by product, costs by month. queries, and the ERP you pulled data from.
  • Write a qualification exactly as its body allows: "CFA Level II candidate" or "Passed CFA Level I", "CIMA, in progress". Only a charterholder writes "CFA" alone.
  • Leave out tools you have only seen; a modelling test in the interview will show it.

Prove each skill

A skill in a list proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: the question you answered, the model or analysis behind it, and the decision or result that followed.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Excel modellingAdvanced Excel.Built the three-statement model for a 5-year plan, with scenarios used by the CFO in the bank talks.
ForecastingPrepared forecasts.Owned the monthly revenue forecast for 4 product lines; error cut from 8 to 3 percent in a year.
Business caseInvestment analysis.Modelled a new warehouse with DCF and scenarios; the board chose to lease instead and saved 2 million euros.
Power BIBuilt reports.Built the KPI dashboard in Power BI for 30 managers; replaced 9 spreadsheets sent by email.
SQLData skills.Wrote SQL on the data warehouse to split margin by customer; found 15 accounts that lost money.

Never claim a decision that was not yours. Say what your analysis did: "my model showed", "I recommended".

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the financial analyst jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a financial analyst do?
Builds forecasts and financial models, compares them with the actual figures, models scenarios and investments, and explains what the figures mean for the decisions ahead.
What is FP&A?
Financial planning and analysis: the team that builds the budget and forecasts, analyses performance and supports leadership's decisions. Most company financial analysts work in it.
Which skills matter most?
Excel modelling and the financial statements first, then data skills such as Power BI and SQL, and the ability to present a recommendation.
Do I need the CFA?
For investment roles it is common; for FP&A roles in companies it is rarely required. CIMA, ACCA or the CPA appear in some FP&A ads instead.
What should a financial analyst CV show first?
Two or three analyses that changed a decision, each with a number, then the models and tools behind them, in the words of the ads.
