What a risk manager does

A risk manager looks at a firm's business and asks what could go wrong, how likely it is and how much it would cost. In banks and insurers the work splits into credit risk, the chance borrowers do not pay; market risk, losses from prices, rates and currencies; liquidity risk, running short of cash; and operational risk, losses from failed processes, people, systems or outside events. In companies outside finance the same role runs enterprise risk management, insurance and business continuity.

Risk management is a second line role: the business takes and owns its risks, the risk function sets the methods and limits and checks them, and internal audit checks both. In a German bank the measuring and reporting part is called Risikocontrolling, and its people Risikocontroller; it is a risk role, not the controller of the finance department, who plans and reports costs and results. The other half of the second line is the compliance officer, who keeps the firm within the rules. The steps from risk analyst to chief risk officer are in the career paths of this role.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €56,171 to €67,800 a year
  • Mid-level: €67,800 to €79,900 a year
  • Senior: €77,741 to €107,593 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's Risikomanager range to StepStone's average; mid-level from that average to the top of StepStone's range, an estimate that does not say how many salaries it rests on; senior runs from Indeed's Risikomanager average to the top of its range, from 89 salaries in job ads. Indeed gives Risikocontroller ads an average of about €74,700, and StepStone estimates a head of risk management at about €94,700 to €120,500.

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Titles and the rules: German ads say Risikomanager, Risk Manager or Risikocontroller, the German title for the risk controlling unit of a bank, which measures and reports risk apart from the business. Banks in Germany follow MaRisk, the German supervisor BaFin's minimum requirements for risk management, on top of the EU's capital rules.

Language: most German ads ask for GermanAsked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where reports and supervisors' talks are in German. next to EnglishThe language of the international standards, group methods and most risk committees., because risk reports and talks with BaFin, the German supervisor, are mostly in German.

The regulators: in India, the RBI sets the capital, liquidity and risk management rules for banks and lenders, building on the international Basel framework, and SEBI those for the securities markets; India's insurers answer to IRDAI, India's insurance regulator.

Frameworks, supervisors and certificates

The Basel framework, the Basel III standards and their final part, often called Basel IV, is the international standard for bank capital and liquidity, set by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. Each place applies it in its own law: the EU through its capital requirements regulation, the CRR, which BaFin, the German supervisor, applies in Germany together with MaRisk; the UK through the PRA, the UK prudential regulator; the US through the Federal Reserve, the OCC and the FDIC, the US bank supervisors; Switzerland through FINMA, the Swiss supervisor; India through the RBI, India's central bank.

Outside banking, the general frameworks are international too: ISO 31000 for risk management and the COSO framework for enterprise risk. These frameworks are summed up here for orientation only; the summary is not legal or regulatory advice. The supervisor of each country and the firm's own lawyers decide what applies.

Two certificates appear in ads and are named here side by side: FRM from GARP and PRM from PRMIA, both international risk associations. Some ads name one of them, others the CFA; most ask for the risk types, models and reports you worked on.

Your CV for a risk manager job

A risk manager's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of risk who wants to know which risks you measured, with which methods, and what decisions your work changed. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the risk types and methods as the ad does: "credit risk", "market risk", "operational risk", "stress testing", "Basel III" from the international framework, and "MaRisk" in German ads. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say for which business: a bank's loan book, a trading desk, an insurer, or a company's whole risk register.
  • Write a certificate you are still studying for as "in progress" with the exam date, next to the work it supports.
  • Name the tools you used yourself, such as Python, SQL or a risk system, and what you built with them.

Prove each skill

A risk line proves itself with a decision it changed: a limit that held, a loss that was avoided or smaller, a model the supervisor accepted, a report the board now reads.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Credit riskJudge whether borrowers will pay: ratings, default and loss estimates, limits and the provisions they drive.Analysed credit risk.Rebuilt the rating model for mid-sized business loans; it ranks defaults better and was approved by the model committee.
Market riskMeasure what price, rate and currency moves do to positions, set limits and explain the numbers.Calculated market risk figures.Moved the daily value at risk run from spreadsheets to a script; the report is ready two hours earlier and every step is logged.
Stress testingTook part in stress tests.Designed the severe recession scenario for the yearly stress test; the board set a lower appetite for property loans.
Operational riskResponsible for operational risk.Introduced key risk indicators for payments; two rising indicators led to fixes before any loss occurred.
Regulatory reportingCapital, liquidity and risk reports to the supervisor, correct, reconciled and on time.Prepared regulatory reports.Reconciled the capital report with the ledger each quarter; the supervisor's review found no difference.

Keep confidential figures out: say how large and what kind, not the firm's exposures or losses.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the risk manager jobs in our job search (risk manager and analyst, credit, market and operational risk, risk management and the German titles Risikomanager and Risikocontroller), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a risk manager do?
Identifies, measures and limits the risks a firm takes, such as credit, market, liquidity and operational risk, and reports them so leaders can decide in time.
Is a Risikocontroller a controller?
No. In a German bank, Risikocontrolling measures and reports risk; the controller of the finance department plans and reports costs and results. Both work with numbers, for different questions.
Do I need to program?
In most analytical risk roles, some Python or SQL helps, and Excel is a given. Management roles need it less, but must understand what the models do.
Is a certificate needed?
No law asks for one. Some ads name FRM or PRM; experience with risk types, models and reports counts for more.
What should a risk manager's CV show first?
The risk types and businesses you covered, the methods and tools you used, and the decisions your work changed.
