What a tax advisor does

A tax advisor makes sure a client pays the tax the law asks for, no more and no less, and on time. Much of the year is compliance: the returns for profit tax, VAT and payroll tax, the figures for the year-end accounts, and the letters with the tax office. The rest is advice: how a new company, a sale, a move abroad or a group structure will be taxed, before it happens.

Tax advisors work in two kinds of places. In a tax firm, one advisor looks after many clients, from the self-employed to mid-sized groups. In the tax team of a company, the advisor looks after one group: its returns in several countries, its tax in the accountsAsked in 8% of tax advisor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Read a balance sheet and the year-end accounts well enough to find the tax in them., transfer pricing and tax audits. The ladder runs from tax assistant to head of tax or tax partner; see the career paths.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles and qualifications of the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

8% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 14% are fully remote.

  • Mid-level: €59,400 to €79,900 a year
  • Senior: €78,000 to €138,856 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level is StepStone's range for trained tax assistants, mid-level its range for Steuerberater. Senior runs from StepStone's figure with experience to the top of Indeed's range. Hamburg and Stuttgart lead StepStone's city figures; Cologne leads Indeed's.

Sources: StepStone: Steuerfachangestellter (2026), StepStone: Steuerberater (2026), Indeed: Steuerberater (Oct 2026), Indeed: Steuerfachangestellte (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 27 Oct 2026.

A regulated title: Steuerberater is a regulated title in Germany. Only someone who has passed the state Steuerberater exam and been admitted by a Steuerberaterkammer, the German chamber of tax advisers, may use it, and the German Steuerberatungsgesetz (StBerG) says who may give tax advice as a business at all. Ads in English often say tax consultant or tax advisor for the same work, so read whether the job needs the German title or only the experience.

The entry job: the Steuerfachangestellte is a three-year vocational training in a German tax firm, with its final exam at the German chamber of tax advisers. After some years of work many take the German Steuerfachwirt exam, and later the Steuerberater exam. On a CV, write an exam you are preparing for as "Steuerberater exam, in progress".

Tools: German tax firms work in DATEVAsked in 14% of tax advisor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The standard software of many tax firms and their clients: books, returns, payroll and the client portal. for books, returns and the exchange with clients, and send returns to the tax office through ELSTER, the German tax office's online portal.

Entry level is the tax associate job and senior the tax manager (Payscale). Tax directors, the head of tax level, report about $130,000 to $245,000 in base. Los Angeles, Houston and New York lead Indeed's city figures.

Qualifications: in the US, the CPA licence comes from a state board after the CPA exam, and the Enrolled Agent status comes from the IRS, the US federal tax authority, after its own exam; both may represent clients before the IRS. Many US tax ads ask for one of them, or for a CPA in progress.

The work: US companies file a federal return and, in most states, a state return as well, so US ads often name the states and the sales tax work besides income tax.

United Kingdom

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: £24,000 to £35,720 a year
  • Mid-level: £35,720 to £64,000 a year
  • Senior: £38,000 to £68,000 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives UK tax managers bonuses of about £500 to £6,000 a year, and tax directors about £7,000 to £18,000.

Pay researched on 27 Oct 2026.

Qualifications: in the UK, the CTA from the Chartered Institute of Taxation is the senior tax qualification, and the ATT from the Association of Taxation Technicians is the usual first step. UK ads often say "CTA qualified or studying".

The authority: HMRC, the UK tax authority, runs corporation tax, VAT and personal tax in the UK, and VAT returns go through its Making Tax Digital rules in the UK.

Switzerland

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: CHF 56,995 to CHF 76,807 a year
  • Mid-level: CHF 76,505 to CHF 136,428 a year
  • Senior: CHF 86,717 to CHF 159,242 a year

Total pay: the Swiss sources give base salary only.

Mid-level and senior are the ranges Indeed gives for tax consultant and Steuerberater. Zurich, Winterthur and Zug lead the city figures.

Changed 29 Oct 2026: the entry level was Indeed's "tax assistant" page, which Indeed has removed (it now shows a general assistant page). The entry level is now the range Lohncheck.ch gives for a Steuerfachangestellter, the Swiss tax assistant (CHF 56,995 to 76,807, Q1 2026, 13 monthly pays). Indeed has no current Swiss page with enough salaries for this title.

Sources: Lohncheck.ch: Steuerfachangestellter (tax assistant) (Q1 2026), Indeed: tax consultant (Oct 2026), Indeed: Steuerberater (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 27 Oct 2026.

Qualifications: the federal diploma of eidgenössisch diplomierter Steuerexperte, or Steuerexpertin, is the senior tax qualification in Switzerland, taken after years of practice. Swiss tax is set at three levels, federal, cantonal and municipal, so Swiss ads often ask for experience in one canton.

India

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: ₹3.28 lakh to ₹5.36 lakh a year
  • Mid-level: ₹5.11 lakh to ₹9.45 lakh a year
  • Senior: ₹8.21 lakh to ₹30 lakh a year

Total pay: Payscale gives tax managers in India bonuses of about ₹97,000 to ₹5.97 lakh a year.

Senior is the tax manager level (Payscale). Indeed's Indian figures rest on few salaries; Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru lead them.

Sources: Payscale: tax consultant (Sep 2026), Indeed (Oct 2026), Payscale: tax manager (Aug 2026).

Pay researched on 27 Oct 2026.

Qualifications and rules: many tax roles in India ask for a Chartered Accountant from ICAI, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Direct tax work in India moves from the Income-tax Act of 1961 to the new Income-tax Act of 2025, in force from April 2026, and GST, India's tax on goods and services, fills much of the indirect tax work.

Where the work is: global capability centres in India, the in-house finance centres of foreign groups, hire tax teams for returns, transfer pricing files and tax data of other countries.

Your CV for a tax advisor job

A tax CV is read first by hiring software, on the words of the ad, and then by a tax manager or partner who checks which taxes, which clients and which countries you really know. Give them both.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the taxes the way the ad names them: "corporate income tax", "VAT", "transfer pricing", "deferred tax", "tax compliance", "tax audit". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the software and what you did in it: "prepared annual returns in DATEVAsked in 14% of tax advisor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The standard software of many tax firms and their clients: books, returns, payroll and the client portal." says more than "DATEV" in a list of tools.
  • Write each qualification exactly as its body awards it, and one you are studying for as "in progress", such as "CTA, in progress, two papers passed".
  • Never name a client or a figure anyone could trace back to one; describe the type of client and the result.

Prove each skill

A tax line proves itself with the scope, what you did and the outcome: returns filed on time, a lower risk, a finding closed, a process faster.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Tax complianceAsked in 9% of tax advisor ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Prepare and review returns for companies and people, and know where the rules of each country differ.Prepared tax returns.Prepared the profit tax and VAT returns of 45 small and mid-sized clients a year; every one filed before its deadline.
DATEVGood DATEV skills.Moved 30 clients to the DATEV online portal; receipts now arrive within days instead of at year-end.
Transfer pricingWorked on transfer pricing.Wrote the local transfer pricing files for 6 group companies; no adjustment in the next tax audit.
Tax auditSupported tax audits.Led a client through a 4-year tax audit; the auditor's first claim was cut by two thirds with documents.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the tax advisor jobs in our job search, matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed list of words. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our own ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: each figure is worked out again every day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a tax advisor do?
Prepares and reviews tax returns, keeps the deadlines, answers the tax office and advises clients or an employer on how their plans will be taxed, within the law of each country.
Is a tax advisor the same as a Steuerberater?
Not always. Steuerberater is a regulated title in Germany that needs the state exam; in English ads, tax advisor or tax consultant often means the job, with or without that title.
Which software do tax ads ask for?
DATEV in German-speaking tax firms, SAP in large companies, the tax office's own portal, and Excel everywhere.
Do I need a tax qualification?
For the senior steps it usually helps: the Steuerberater exam in Germany, the CTA in the UK, a CPA or Enrolled Agent status in the US, a Chartered Accountant in India.
What should a tax advisor CV show first?
The taxes and countries you know, the kind of clients you served, and two or three results with figures, in the words of the ad.
