What a data governance manager does
A data governance manager, also called a data governance lead, and in German often a Data Governance Manager or Datenqualitätsmanager, runs the rules and the people behind a company's data: who owns customer or product data, what each term means, which quality the data must have and who fixes it when it does not. Data stewards in the business units do much of the daily work; the manager sets up the roles, the policies, the catalogue and the council where decisions are made.
The role sits next to the other data roles. The data architect designs how data is stored and moved and the data engineer builds the pipelines; the data analyst is often the first to find bad data. Privacy work, the rights of people over their personal data, belongs to the data protection officer, with whom governance works closely. The steps from data steward to chief data officer are in the career paths of this role.
Data rules differ by place and sector; each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice.

Governing one data domain, step by step
- Choose: a domain the business cares about, such as customer data, and its most important fields.
- Assign: an owner who decides and stewards who look after the data day to day.
- Define: the terms in a glossary and the quality rules each field must meet.
- Measure and fix: score the data against the rules, trace problems to their source and fix them there.
- Spread: record it all in the catalogue, report progress to the council, then take the next domain.
The hard part is not the policy but the habit: owners who decide, stewards who fix, projects that ask before they create new data. A good data governance manager is trusted because the figures in the board's reports stopped being argued about.
Your CV for a data governance manager job
A data governance manager's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a head of data who wants to see which data you governed, how its quality changed and how you got the business to take part. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the work as the ads do: "data governance", "data quality", "data ownership", "metadata", "data lineage", "master data", and the catalogue tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say which data domains you governed and for how many business units or countries.
- Show results the business recognised: errors cut, reports reconciled, audits passed, time saved.
- Show a certificate you are still preparing for as in progress, with the exam you have planned.
Prove each skill
A governance line proves itself with a domain, a change in how people work and a measured result.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Data qualityDefine, measure and improve the quality of the data the business relies on, rule by rule. | Improved data quality. | Set quality rules for customer addresses with the stewards; returned mail fell by half in a year. |
| OwnershipSet who owns which data, which rules apply to it and how decisions about it are made. | Set up data governance. | Named owners and stewards for the five main data domains and ran the council that settles disputes. |
| LineageKeep definitions, lineage and owners of data recorded so that people can find and trust it. | Documented data. | Traced the lineage of the ten figures in the board report; two calculation errors were found and fixed. |
| CatalogueRun a data catalogue that people search every day, not a list that ages after launch. | Introduced a data catalogue. | Launched the data catalogue with a glossary of two hundred terms; analysts now search it daily. |
| Risk dataKnow the Basel Committee's principles for risk data and what they ask of banks' data. | Supported regulatory reporting. | Mapped the risk data behind the bank's capital report to the BCBS 239 principles for the supervisor's review. |
Keep confidential details out: no real figures from internal reports and no customer data.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the data governance manager jobs in our job search (data governance managers and leads, data stewards, data quality managers and the German title Datenqualitätsmanager), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; data protection and privacy titles are counted on the data protection officer's page. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a data governance manager do?
- Gives important data owners, definitions and quality rules, runs the stewards and the council, and makes sure the data can be trusted.
- Is data governance the same as data protection?
- No. Data protection is about people's rights over their personal data; governance is about owning, defining and trusting all data. The two work together.
- Do I need a technical background?
- It helps to query data and read models, but much of the job is with people; many come from the business side.
- Is a data management certificate required?
- Some ads name one, though most do not; governance you made work counts for more.
- What should a data governance manager's CV show first?
- The data domains you governed, the owners and stewards you set up, and how the quality changed.
