What an energy engineer does

An energy engineer, an Energieingenieur in German ads, works on how energy is produced, stored and used. On one side are projects that make energy: solar and wind plants, their yield studies, grid connections and storage. On the other are projects that save it: energy audits of buildings and factories, heat pumps and heat recovery, energy management systems and the rules for buildings. The work mixes calculation and modelling at a desk with site visits, permits and talks with owners and network operators.

Several titles sit next to this one. The electrical engineer designs power systems, substations and installations; the environmental engineer deals with permits, emissions and the effects on nature; the sustainability manager steers a company's climate targets and reporting; the civil engineer builds the foundations and structures. In Germany an Energieberater advises on the energy use of buildings and counts here; the Solarteur who installs solar systems and the Elektroniker für Energie- und Gebäudetechnik are trained trades, not covered here. The steps from junior energy engineer to head of energy engineering are in the career paths of this role.

Energy rules and funding differ by country, and each country's section names its own. This page describes energy work in general; it is not engineering, legal, tax or career advice.

Sources: Payscale: energy engineer (Jan 2026), Indeed: energy engineer (Jan 2026).

Pay researched on 29 Oct 2026.

Rules and work: India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the MNRE, steers the build-out of solar and wind, and India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency runs the national exam that certifies energy auditors and energy managers. Many Indian energy engineers work on large solar and wind parks and in industrial efficiency.

Energy rules are named side by side, each with its place. In the EU, the Renewable Energy Directive sets the shared goals for renewable power; the German EEG sets how renewable power is supported in Germany; in the US, FERC sets the rules for connecting large plants to the transmission grid; the UK supports new renewable power through Contracts for Difference under Ofgem's market rules; the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050 steers Switzerland's energy policy; and India's MNRE steers its solar and wind build-out. Funding and tax rules change often, so a project checks the current ones with its advisers.

The technical standards are mostly international: ISO 50001 for energy management systems, IEC 61400 for wind turbines and IEC 61724 for monitoring the performance of solar plants. Energy audits in Europe often follow EN 16247, a European standard.

One solar project, step by step

  1. Screen: check the site, the sun, the land or roof, the grid nearby and the rules that apply.
  2. Design and yield: lay out the plant, estimate its yield with shading and losses, and size any storage.
  3. Connect: run the grid connection study and agree the connection with the network operator.
  4. Build and commission: support permits and purchasing, then check the plant against its design at start-up.
  5. Operate: monitor the performance, compare it with the yield study and chase every loss.

The numbers that make or break a project are often not the panels but the grid connection, the permit and the assumptions behind the yield.

Your CV for an energy engineer job

An energy engineer's CV first meets software that searches it for the ad's words, then a lead engineer who wants to know which plants or buildings you worked on, what you calculated and what came of it. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Write the work as the ads do: "renewable energy", "PV", "yield", "grid connection", "energy audit", the tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the kind of project: solar, wind, storage, buildings, industry, and its size in the units the field uses, such as megawatts.
  • Say how far the work went: feasibility, permit, construction, operation.
  • An energy auditor or adviser qualification you are still working towards goes on the CV as in progress, with the planned date.

Prove each skill

An energy line proves itself with a project, the number you worked out and what was decided on it.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the energy engineer jobs in our job search (energy engineers, renewable, solar and wind energy engineers, energy consultants, and the German titles Energieingenieur, Ingenieur Erneuerbare Energien and Energieberater), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; electrical and environmental engineers are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
