What an HR manager does
An HR manager makes sure a company has the right people, on fair terms, and that managers lead them well. The daily work is a mix of cases and projects: an offer to agree, a contract to change, a manager who needs help with a low performer, a sick employee, a dismissal to prepare within the law. Projects come on top: a pay review, a new HR system, a reorganisation.
In a small company one HR manager does all of it. In a large one the work splits: HR business partners advise the leaders of a business unit, specialist teams handle recruiting, pay and benefits or learning, and a shared service centre runs the records and payrollAsked in 9% of HR manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know how pay, tax and social contributions flow each month, and catch errors before people are paid.. The ladder runs from HR generalist to HR director or CHRO, the chief HR officer; see the career paths.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Your CV for an HR manager job
An HR manager's CV is read by hiring software, on the words of the ad, and then by an HR leader who knows exactly how HR work is done and looks for results, not duties. Write for both.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the work the way HR ads name it: "recruiting", "onboarding", "performance management", "compensation and benefits", "employee relations", "labour law", "HR business partner". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Name the HR system and what you did in it: "set up the performance module in SAPAsked in 13% of HR manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).SAP SuccessFactors and SAP HCM run HR in many large companies: records, pay, performance and learning. SuccessFactors", not "HR systems" in a list.
- Write a qualification exactly as its body awards it, and one you are studying for as "in progress", such as "CIPD Level 7, in progress".
- Never put an employee's name or a case anyone could recognise on your CV; describe the type of case and the result.
Prove each skill
An HR line proves itself with the people problem, what you did and what changed: fewer leavers, faster hiring, a fair agreement, a project live on time.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiting | Responsible for recruiting. | Rebuilt hiring for 40 sales roles a year; time to hire from 62 to 38 days, and fewer leavers in year one. |
| HR analyticsAsked in 2% of HR manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Turn HR data into answers: why people leave, where pay is unequal, which hires stay. | HR reporting. | Built an exit analysis by team and manager; found 2 teams with half the leavers and fixed their onboarding. |
| HR systems | Worked with SAP. | Led the move of 1,800 employee records to SAP SuccessFactors; live on the planned date with no payroll errors. |
| Employee relations | Handled employee issues. | Agreed a works agreement on hybrid work with the works council in 3 months, without a dispute. |
| Pay and benefitsAsked in 9% of HR manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know how pay, tax and social contributions flow each month, and catch errors before people are paid. | Compensation. | Ran the yearly pay review for 600 staff; closed 3 unexplained gender pay gaps inside the budget. |
Never claim a decision that was a manager's. Say what HR did: "I advised", "I designed", "I led the talks".
How we read our data
- The jobs: the HR manager jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
- Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an HR manager do?
- Looks after a company's people from hire to exit: recruiting, contracts, pay and benefits, performance, employee relations, HR data and change, within the employment law of the country.
- What is an HR business partner?
- An HR professional who advises the leaders of one part of the business on their people, while specialist teams and a service centre handle the routine work.
- Which HR systems do ads ask for?
- SAP SuccessFactors and Workday in large companies, Personio in many small and mid-sized ones in Europe, and Excel everywhere.
- Do I need an HR qualification?
- It depends on the country: the CIPD is common in the UK, the SHRM-CP in the US, the Personalfachkaufmann in Germany; many ads accept a degree and experience instead.
- What should an HR manager CV show first?
- Two or three results with numbers, such as faster hiring, fewer leavers or a project delivered, then the laws and systems you know, in the words of the ads.
