What an embedded software engineer does
An embedded software engineer makes a piece of hardware do its job, reliably, for years, often without anyone watching. The software reads sensors, drives motors and displays, talks to other devices over buses and radio, and must react in time, every time. Much of it runs on small microcontrollers with no operating system or a small real-time one; larger devices run embedded Linux.
The work sits between hardware and software: reading datasheets and schematics, bringing up new boards, measuring signals with an oscilloscope, and proving with tests and reviews that the software is safe where safety matters. Titles vary: Embedded Software Engineer, Firmware Engineer, Embedded Developer. The steps from junior to head of embedded software are in the career paths of this role.
The skills the ads ask for
We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.
| Skill | Share of ads | What is expected |
|---|---|---|
| C++ | 76% | Modern C++ for small devices: no surprise memory use, careful with exceptions and templates, clear ownership of every buffer. |
| Linux | 41% | Embedded Linux: build an image, write or adapt a driver, read kernel logs, and keep boot time short. |
| Git | 22% | Branches, reviews and tags that tie every firmware build to its source and its test results. |
| Python | 22% | Scripts for tests, flashing, log parsing and test rigs; rarely on the device itself. |
| Problem solving | 5% | Find a fault that appears once a day on one board: measure, narrow down, prove the cause. |
| Teamwork | 23% | Work daily with hardware, test and systems engineers; most problems sit between two of them. |
| Unit Testing | 8% | Tests of the logic on the build machine, with the hardware replaced by stand-ins, run on every change. |
| CI/CD | 16% | Every change built for the target, run through static analysis and tests, ideally on real hardware too. |
| Cybersecurity | 9% | Secure boot, signed updates, no default passwords, and a plan for fixing flaws after the product ships. |
| MATLAB | 2% | Model-based design in MATLAB and Simulink, common in automotive control; generated code still needs review. |
| Networking | 20% | Bus and network protocols: CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet and wireless links, and how to read them on a scope. |
| Quality Management | 16% | Work inside a quality system: requirements traced to tests, reviews, and records an assessor can follow. |
| Rust | 2% | A newer choice for memory-safe firmware; a plus in some ads, still rare in safety-certified products. |
| English | 66% | The language of datasheets, standards, tools and most international engineering teams. |
| German | 68% | Asked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where many teams work in German day to day. |

Product rules and work: many electronics products sold in India must be registered with BIS, the Bureau of Indian Standards, before sale. India has large design centres for chips, cars and industrial electronics, where engineers often work with hardware teams abroad across time zones.
Safety standards and certificates
Where a software fault can hurt people, the software is built to a functional safety standard. The international basic standard is IEC 61508; the international standard ISO 26262 adapts it for road vehicles, and the international standard IEC 62304 sets the life cycle of medical device software. Aircraft software follows DO-178C, written jointly by bodies in the US and Europe and used internationally. They ask for traced requirements, reviews, testing to a defined depth and records that an independent assessor can check.
No personal certificate is required by law to write embedded software. Products and processes are assessed against these standards, not people; some engineers take a functional safety course with an exam to learn the method, and safety projects ask for proven competence. MISRA C and MISRA C++, coding guidelines used in many safety projects, and IEC 62443, the international series for industrial security, often come with the work. In the EU, the Cyber Resilience Act adds security duties for products with digital parts sold in the EU.
Your CV for an embedded software engineer job
An embedded CV is read twice: by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, and by a lead engineer who looks for products that shipped and problems you solved on real hardware. Give both: the keywords, and the devices with what you did on them.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the stack as ads name it: "C", "C++", "RTOS", "FreeRTOS" or "Zephyr", "embedded Linux", "Yocto", "CAN", "ARM Cortex-M". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say what hardware you worked on: the kind of microcontroller, the buses, the sensors, the tools such as debuggers and oscilloscopes.
- Mark a safety or security course you have not finished as "in progress", and name the standard it covers.
- Name the industry and its standard where it applies: automotive with ISO 26262, medical with IEC 62304, industrial with IEC 61508, all of them international standards.
Prove each skill
A firmware line proves itself with a device, a constraint and a result: power cut, memory saved, boot time shortened, a field failure found and fixed.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| C++ firmwareAsked in 76% of embedded software engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Modern C++ for small devices: no surprise memory use, careful with exceptions and templates, clear ownership of every buffer. | Wrote embedded C++ code. | Wrote the motor control firmware in C++ for a pump on a Cortex-M4; control loop jitter under 5 microseconds. |
| Low power | Optimised power consumption. | Cut sleep current of a battery sensor from 40 to 6 microamps; battery life went from 1 to 5 years. |
| Embedded LinuxAsked in 41% of embedded software engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Embedded Linux: build an image, write or adapt a driver, read kernel logs, and keep boot time short. | Worked with embedded Linux. | Built the Yocto image and two drivers for a gateway; boot time fell from 45 to 12 seconds. |
| Safety | Worked on safety-relevant software. | Wrote and tested an ASIL B brake function to ISO 26262 with full requirement tracing; passed the external assessment. |
| Field updates | Implemented firmware update. | Built signed over-the-air updates with rollback for 20,000 meters; no device lost in two years of updates. |
Keep each line to what you did yourself. Embedded products are team work: say which part was yours, the driver, the protocol, the test rig.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the embedded software engineer jobs in our job search (embedded software engineer, embedded developer and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an embedded software engineer do?
- Writes the software inside devices: drivers, control logic, communication and updates, on small processors where memory, power and timing are limited.
- Which language should I learn?
- C first, then C++; Python helps for tests and tools. Rust is growing but still rare in ads.
- Do I need a safety certificate?
- No law asks for one. Safety projects ask that you know the standard they follow, such as the international ISO 26262 or IEC 62304, and can show it in your work.
- Which tools should an embedded engineer know?
- A debugger with JTAG or SWD, an oscilloscope and a logic analyser, a real-time operating system such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr, Git and a build pipeline.
- What should an embedded CV show first?
- The devices you worked on, the hardware and buses, and results such as power saved, boot time or field failures fixed.
