What a quality manager does
A quality manager runs the quality system of a company or a site: the processes that make sure products are right the first time, the audits that check them, and the problem solving when something goes wrong. A typical week mixes a customer complaint, a supplier problem, an internal audit, a review of scrap figures with production and the preparation for the next external audit.
The role is most common in manufacturing, automotive, medical devices, food and chemicals. Software testing is a different field with a similar name; quality in software is covered on the test manager page. The steps from quality engineer to director of quality are in the career paths of this role.

Standards and marks: in India, the BIS, the Bureau of Indian Standards, sets national standards and runs compulsory registration for many electronic and industrial goods, and medical devices are regulated by the CDSCO, India's drug and device regulator.
Standards, certification and the roles around them
Most quality systems follow international standards: ISO 9001 for any organisation, IATF 16949 for automotive suppliers, ISO 13485 for medical devices and AS9100 for aerospace. ISO 14001 for the environment and ISO 45001 for safety at work are often run by the same team. The standards are named side by side because ads name them by industry.
A company is certified against a standard by an independent certification body, which audits it every year and in more depth every three years. Between those visits, internal auditors in the company check the system, and a lead auditor plans and leads an audit, a role with its own training under schemes run in each country. Six Sigma belts name levels of training in a problem-solving method.
No single certificate is required to work as a quality manager. Employers name the standards they work to, and some ask for auditor training or a Six Sigma belt; real problems solved and audits passed are what interviews test. This page describes these roles in plain words.
Your CV for a quality manager job
A quality manager's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of quality who wants to know which standards, products and audits you have behind you, and what got better because of you. Give both the keywords and the results.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the standards and methods exactly as the ad does: "ISO 9001", "IATF 16949", "8D", "FMEA", "PPAP". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Give the setting: the industry, the products, the size of the site and the customers you dealt with.
- Write auditor training or a belt you are still working on as "in progress" with the planned date.
- Name the audits you led or passed, internal, supplier and external, and their result.
Prove each skill
A quality line proves itself with a measure that moved: complaints, scrap, customer returns, supplier defects, audit findings, and over what period.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 9001Asked in 41% of quality manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know what each clause asks for in practice and how an auditor checks it, without writing documents nobody reads. | Responsible for ISO 9001. | Took a site of three hundred people through its recertification audit with no major finding, after two the year before. |
| 8DAsked in 12% of quality manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Lead a team from symptom to root cause to a fix that holds, without blaming people. | Solved quality problems. | Led the 8D for a recurring leak at a key customer; root cause in the welding fixture, no repeat in twelve months. |
| Supplier quality | Managed suppliers. | Audited and coached the five suppliers with the most defects; their reject rate fell by half within a year. |
| SPCSampling, control charts, capability and simple tests, enough to tell a real shift from noise. | Introduced SPC. | Put control charts on the three critical dimensions of a machined part; scrap on that line fell by a third. |
| Complaints | Handled customer complaints. | Cut the average time to answer a customer complaint from three weeks to one with a fixed first response. |
Give the size of results as ratios or directions when absolute figures are confidential; a third less scrap says enough.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the quality manager jobs in our job search (quality manager and the German titles Qualitätsmanager, Qualitätssicherung and Qualitätsmanagementbeauftragter), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
