What a hardware engineer does

A hardware engineer, a Hardwareentwickler or Elektronikentwickler in German ads, designs the electronics of a product: from the requirements to the circuit, the choice of parts, the schematic and the printed circuit board, then the first prototypes, their bring-up in the lab, the tests for safety and electromagnetic compatibility, and the hand-over to production. The work sits in cars, industrial machines, medical devices, telecoms, consumer products, computing and defence.

Several titles sit next to this one. The electrical engineer works on power systems, drives, installations and automation; the embedded software engineer writes the firmware that runs on the board; the mechatronics engineer joins mechanics, electronics and control in one system. An Elektroniker in Germany is a trained trade that builds, installs and repairs electronics; it is not covered here, nor is IT hardware support. The steps from junior hardware engineer to head of hardware are in the career paths of this role.

Product rules differ by country, and each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not engineering, legal or career advice.

Rules and work: many electronic products sold in India need registration with the BIS, India's standards bureau. India's semiconductor programme, launched in 2021, and its design centres for global companies add hardware roles. Many Indian ads titled hardware engineer mean desktop and network support, which this page does not cover.

Product marks and rules are named side by side, each with its place. In the EU, the CE marking shows that a product meets the EU directives for electromagnetic compatibility, low voltage and radio equipment, and the EU's RoHS rules limit hazardous substances; many German teams also follow VDE standards; in the US the FCC authorises radio emissions and UL lists products for safety; the UK uses its UKCA mark next to the CE mark; Swiss rules accept the CE mark; and India asks for registration with the BIS for many electronics. The safety standards themselves are mostly international: IEC 62368-1 for audio, video and IT equipment, IEC 60601 for medical electrical equipment, ISO 26262 for functional safety in cars, and the IPC standards for boards and their assembly.

One board, step by step

  1. Specify: agree the functions, interfaces, power, size, cost and the standards the product must meet.
  2. Design: choose the parts, draw the schematic, simulate the critical circuits and review it.
  3. Lay out: plan the stack-up and placement with the layout engineer, route, and review again.
  4. Bring up and test: power the first boards step by step, measure, fix, then run EMC, thermal and safety tests.
  5. Release: hand the design to production with test points, test plans and a parts list that can be bought for years.

The most expensive mistakes are the cheapest to prevent: a footprint that does not match the part, a missing test point, or a part that will be out of production before the product ships.

Your CV for a hardware engineer job

A hardware engineer's CV first meets software that searches it for the ad's words, then a lead engineer who wants to know which boards you designed, what was hard about them and whether they went into production. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Write the work as the ads do: "circuit design", "schematic", "PCB layout", "EMC", "bring-up", the EDA tool you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the kind of board: power, analogue, mixed-signal, high-speed digital, RF, and the industry.
  • Say how far your designs went: prototype, certification, series production.
  • A course or a standard you are still learning, such as a functional safety course, goes on the CV as in progress, with the planned date.

Prove each skill

A hardware line proves itself with a board, the problem you solved and what came of it.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the hardware engineer jobs in our job search (hardware engineers and developers, PCB design and electronics engineers, and the German titles Hardwareentwickler, Elektronikentwickler and Elektronikingenieur), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; electrical engineers and embedded software engineers are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
