What an engineering manager does

An engineering manager is responsible for a team of engineers and for what that team delivers. Most of the week goes to people: one-to-ones, feedback, hiring, onboarding and career growth. The rest goes to delivery: agreeing priorities with product, planning work across teams, removing blockers, and making sure incidents are handled and learned from. Writing code is no longer the job; understanding the system well enough to ask good questions is.

The role sits between the engineers and the rest of the company. The software developers build the product; the software architect shapes the system across teams; the product manager decides what problems are worth solving; a scrum master, where there is one, coaches the way of working. The engineering manager makes these fit for one team, and answers for its health and its results. In German ads the same job is often called Teamleiter Softwareentwicklung or Entwicklungsleiter. The steps from tech lead up to CTO are in the career paths of this role.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

4% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 43% are fully remote.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €73,187 to €87,900 a year
  • Mid-level: €87,900 to €97,026 a year
  • Senior: €97,026 to €128,631 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only; Payscale's few German salaries, last updated in 2023, show bonuses of up to about €28,000.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's range to StepStone's average, an estimate that does not say how many salaries it rests on; mid-level from that average to Indeed's average; senior runs from Indeed's average to the top of its range, from 94 salaries in job ads. StepStone estimates an experienced engineering manager at about €127,000. StepStone's page for Entwicklungsleiter mixes in heads of mechanical development and is not used.

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Titles and co-determination: German ads say Engineering Manager, Teamleiter or Leiter Softwareentwicklung, and Entwicklungsleiter, a title some firms also use for the head of mechanical or electrical development, so the ad's text tells you which it is. Where a German company has a works council, the Betriebsrat, it has a say in tools that can track how people work, which shapes how an engineering manager in Germany measures a team.

Language: many German teams work in EnglishAsked in 81% of engineering manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The working language of many engineering teams, documents and tools, even inside one country., while ads for managers in established German firms often ask for GermanAsked in 61% of engineering manager ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Asked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where teams and works councils speak German. as well, for HR talks and the works council.

Notice and contracts: in the UK, a notice period of one to three months is usual for engineering managers, so hiring plans in the UK allow for that wait; some UK roles are interim contracts through a limited company, under the UK's IR35 rules.

Where the roles are: in India, many engineering manager roles sit in product companies and in global capability centres, the in-house engineering hubs of international firms, where a manager in India often leads a team that works with colleagues in other time zones.

Job figures as of 5 Nov 2026.

People first, then delivery

Hiring managers look for evidence of three things. First, that you grow people: engineers you coached into larger work, a promotion you prepared, a struggling colleague you helped or, when help did not work, a fair exit. Second, that the team delivers: what shipped, how predictably, and how you handled a date that would not hold. Third, that you make the team's work easier to do: fewer interruptions, clearer priorities, less time lost to incidents.

Size and shape differ. A first engineering manager role often means one team of about five to eight people, sometimes with a little hands-on work left; a senior engineering manager leads several teams through their managers or leads. Ads that ask for a manager who still writes much of the code are describing a tech lead role with people duties, and it is worth asking which one the company means.

Your CV for an engineering manager job

An engineering manager's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a director who wants to know how many people you led, what they shipped, and how the team changed under you. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the people work as the ad does: "people management", "hiring", "one-to-ones", "performance reviews", "career development". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Give the size and kind of team: how many engineers, which product, and whether you managed managers.
  • Name the way of working and the tools as the team used them, such as Scrum, Kanban, Jira or OKRs, and say what you changed in them.
  • Keep a short line on the systems your team owned, so a technical reader sees what you can judge.

Prove each skill

A management line proves itself with a change in people or results: someone promoted, a hire who stayed, a release cadence that steadied, an incident rate that fell.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the engineering manager jobs in our job search (engineering manager, software engineering manager, head of engineering and the German titles Leiter Softwareentwicklung and Entwicklungsleiter), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does an engineering manager do?
Leads a team of software engineers: hires and grows them, agrees priorities with product, keeps delivery steady and makes sure problems in production are handled and learned from.
Does an engineering manager still write code?
Little or none in most companies. Some first roles keep a small share of hands-on work; the job is judged on the team's results, not on the manager's own code.
Is an Entwicklungsleiter an engineering manager?
Often, in software companies. Some industrial firms use the title for the head of mechanical or electrical development, so read the ad's tasks before you apply.
How is an engineering manager different from a tech lead?
A tech lead guides the technical work of a team and usually has no people to manage; an engineering manager is responsible for the people, their growth and the team's delivery.
What should an engineering manager's CV show first?
The size of the teams you led, what they delivered, and the people you hired and grew.
