What a site reliability engineer does

A site reliability engineer, or SRE, treats running software as an engineering problem. With the teams that own a service, an SRE agrees how reliable it must be, measures it, and spends the time between incidents removing the causes of the next one: alerts that wake nobody for nothing, releases that can be rolled back, capacity that is there before the peak, and repeated manual work turned into automation.

SRE and DevOps overlap, and many ads mix them. DevOps describes how a company builds, ships and runs software together; SRE is one way to do the running part, with service level objectives, error budgets and a cap on manual work. The steps of the neighbouring role are on the DevOps engineer page, and the steps above SRE are in the career paths of this role.

The skills the ads ask for

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

0% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 70% are fully remote.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €58,635 to €68,000 a year
  • Mid-level: €68,000 to €85,000 a year
  • Senior: €85,000 to €113,919 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's SRE range to JobJump's figure for the first two years; mid-level from there to JobJump's figure with experience; senior from that figure to the top of Indeed's range. JobJump's levels are estimates from job ads with no count given for this title; Munich leads Indeed's city figures.

Incident disclosure: in the US, the SEC asks listed companies to disclose a material cybersecurity incident within four business days of deciding it is material, so SREs at such companies keep timelines that can stand up to that review.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment with an on-call rota; contract roles are rarer.

United Kingdom

0% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 71% are fully remote.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: £48,834 to £61,125 a year
  • Mid-level: £67,500 to £80,000 a year
  • Senior: £80,000 to £95,375 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives SREs in Switzerland bonuses of about CHF 10,000 to CHF 39,000 a year.

No Swiss source gives figures by level from many salaries, so the levels rest on few: entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's range to Payscale's figure for one to four years, mid-level from there to Payscale's average, and senior from that average to the top of Indeed's range.

Sources: Indeed (Oct 2026), Payscale: site reliability engineer (Dec 2025).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Operational resilience: Swiss banks and insurers follow FINMA's rules, the Swiss financial regulator's, on operational risk and resilience, so SREs there test that critical services recover within set times.

India

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: ₹5.5 lakh to ₹8.32 lakh a year

Incident reporting: in India, CERT-In, India's computer emergency team, asks for many cyber incidents to be reported within six hours of noticing them, which shapes how SRE teams in India run their incident process.

Targets, on-call and rules

The core ideas come from the book Site Reliability Engineering of 2016, written by engineers who started the practice, and its later companion books: a reliability target per service, an error budget that decides when to slow releases down, reviews of incidents without blame, and a limit on manual work. Teams adapt them; few apply every idea.

On-call is part of most SRE jobs. A fair rota, alerts that matter and rest after a night call are worth asking about in the interview. Rules also reach into the work: in the EU, financial companies must meet DORA, the Digital Operational Resilience Act, with incident reporting and resilience tests, and many other sectors fall under NIS2. Each country section below names its own rules.

Your CV for a site reliability engineer job

An SRE CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a lead engineer who wants to know what you kept running, how reliable it became, and what you automated away. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the tools and practices as the ad does: "SLO", "error budget", "Kubernetes", "Prometheus", "on-call", "incident management", "postmortem". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say what you ran: the services, the traffic, the targets, and whether you were on call.
  • Write a certification or course you are working towards as "in progress" with the planned month, next to the production work it covers.
  • Give reliability in measured terms: incidents, time to restore, alerts per week, pages at night.

Prove each skill

An SRE line proves itself with a change in a number: fewer incidents, a shorter outage, quieter nights, a release process that stopped breaking things.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Service level objectivesDefined SLOs.Introduced SLOs and error budgets for 12 customer-facing services; release freezes are now agreed with data, not argued.

AutomationAsked in 67% of site reliability engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Tools that remove repeated work: checks, clean-ups, reports and small services that fix things on their own.Automated tasks.Automated certificate renewal and disk clean-up; the two most common causes of night calls disappeared.

Write only what you changed yourself. If a team did it, say which part was yours: the target, the tool, the review, the automation.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the site reliability engineer jobs in our job search (site reliability engineer, SRE and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a site reliability engineer do?
Keeps production services available and fast: agrees targets, measures them, leads incidents and automates away the manual work that causes the next one.
What is the difference between SRE and DevOps?
DevOps is a way of building and running software together; SRE is one way of doing the running part, with service level objectives, error budgets and a limit on manual work.
Is on-call part of the job?
In most SRE jobs, yes. Ask how the rota works, how many alerts come at night and what rest follows a call-out.
Do I need a certification?
No law asks for one. Some ads name a Kubernetes or cloud certificate; most ask for production systems you ran.
What should an SRE CV show first?
The services you kept running, their targets, and measured changes such as fewer incidents or a shorter time to restore.
