What a software architect does

A software architect makes the decisions that are expensive to change later: how a system is divided into parts, how those parts communicate, which data each part owns, and which platforms it runs on. Each decision is a trade-off between qualities such as speed, cost, reliability, security and how fast teams can change things, and the architect's job is to make that trade-off visible and agreed.

Most architects still read code and some still write it, but the daily work is talk and writing: design reviews with teams, short decision records, diagrams people understand, and meetings with product managers, operations and finance about what a choice will cost. A good architect is judged by systems that keep working and teams that are not blocked.

People usually become architects after years as a senior developer. Titles vary: Software Architect, Solution Architect, Application Architect, and in German ads Softwarearchitekt. Above it sit senior and principal architects, enterprise and chief architects, and for some the CTO role; see the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Your CV for a software architect job

An architect's CV passes the hiring software on the platform and design words of the ad, then a CTO or a principal architect reads it for one thing: decisions you made and how they turned out. Show the decision, the trade-off and the result.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the architecture work as the ad does: "solution design", "microservices", "event-driven", "cloud architecture", "integration", "modernisation". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the platforms you designed on, such as AWSAsked in 10% of software architect ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The building blocks of Amazon's cloud, their limits and their price, at the level of whole systems. or AzureAsked in 14% of software architect ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Microsoft's cloud, common in European enterprises; landing zones, identity and managed services., and the main language you can still review, such as JavaAsked in 22% of software architect ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).A main language of enterprise systems; frameworks such as Spring shape many designs you will review..
  • Name the methods you use to decide and document: architecture decision records, the C4 model, quality attribute scenarios. Interviewers often ask about them.
  • Write a certification exactly as granted, such as "AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Professional"; one you are still studying for is written "in progress".

Prove each skill

An architect's line on a CV is strongest when it names the choice you made, what you gave up for it, and what happened next, with a number a business person would care about.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
MicroservicesAsked in 4% of software architect ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Know when splitting a system into services pays off, and the operating cost it adds when it does not.Designed microservice architectures.Split the order system into 5 services along team lines; releases went from monthly to daily.
Legacy migrationModernised legacy systems.Replaced a 20-year-old billing system piece by piece behind a facade; no outage during 18 months of migration.
Event-driven designExperience with Kafka.Moved stock updates to events on Kafka; the shop and the warehouse stayed in step at 4 times the old peak load.
Cloud costCloud architecture on AWS.Redesigned batch jobs around managed queues; the monthly AWS bill fell by a third.
Decision recordsDocumentation.Introduced architecture decision records for 12 teams; new engineers found the reason behind each choice in minutes.

Architecture is team work, so say which part was yours: "I proposed", "I led the review", "I wrote the decision record". Claiming a whole platform as yours alone does not survive the interview.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the software architect jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a software architect do?
Decides how a system is divided, how its parts communicate, which data each part owns and which platforms it runs on, and makes those trade-offs clear to engineers and to the business.
How do I become a software architect?
Usually from senior developer: take on design decisions beyond your own code, write them down, lead reviews, and show the results. A title often follows the work.
Do architects still write code?
Many do, at least for prototypes and reviews. Every architect needs to read code well enough to judge a design in practice.
Is a certification needed?
Rarely. iSAQB is known in German-speaking countries, TOGAF in enterprise roles and cloud credentials in cloud roles, but decisions you can show matter more.
What should a software architect CV show first?
Three or four architecture decisions you led, each with the trade-off and a result, then the platforms and methods in the words of the ads.
