What a buyer does

A buyer spends the company's money with suppliers, and the job is to spend it well. That means understanding what the business needs, finding and choosing suppliers, negotiating price and terms, writing them into contracts, and then making sure deliveries come on time and at the agreed quality. Every figure is tracked: savings, prices, delivery and the risk of each supplier.

Most purchasing teams split the work in two. Operational buyers place orders, chase late deliveries and clear invoice problems. Strategic buyers and category managers decide which suppliers to use for a whole group of products, the category, and run the tenders. The ladder runs from junior buyer to head of procurement and CPO, the chief procurement officer; see the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

Your CV for a buyer job

A purchasing lead reads a buyer's CV for three things: what you bought, how much of it, and what you saved or secured. Hiring software reads it first, for the words of the ad.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work in procurement words: "strategic sourcing", "tender", "supplier management", "contract negotiation", "category", "cost reduction", "purchase-to-pay". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say what you bought and the spend you managed: "electronic components, 14 million euros a year" tells the reader more than "various materials".
  • Name the system and what you did in it: "set up framework contracts in SAP MMAsked in 23% of buyer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Work in SAP MM: purchase requisitions, orders, contracts, supplier records and goods receipts.", "ran tenders in Coupa".
  • Write a qualification you have started as "in progress", such as "CIPS Level 4 Diploma, in progress" or "Fachwirt für Einkauf (IHK), in progress".

Prove each skill

Savings prove a buyer's work only when finance would sign them: say against what baseline, and add the results that are not price, such as fewer late deliveries or a second source.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
SourcingAsked in 82% of buyer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Source, buy and manage what the company needs: suppliers, tenders, contracts, orders and savings.Responsible for sourcing.Ran 9 tenders for packaging worth 6 million euros a year; 7.5 percent saving against last year's prices, signed off by finance.
NegotiationAsked in 10% of buyer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Prepare from cost and market data, know your alternative, and agree price and terms that last.Negotiated with suppliers.Held a steel supplier's price rise to 3 percent instead of 11 by tying prices to a published index.
Supplier riskSupplier management.Qualified a second supplier for 4 single-source parts; no line stop in the 2025 shortage.
SAP MMSAP knowledge.Moved 300 recurring orders onto framework contracts in SAP MM; order processing time cut by half.
Total costCost-conscious.Chose a nearer supplier at a 4 percent higher price; total cost fell 9 percent after freight and stock.

Never count a saving twice, and do not claim the price drop of a falling market as your own work; interviewers ask.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the buyer jobs in our job search, matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a buyer do?
Finds and chooses suppliers, negotiates price and terms, writes them into contracts, and makes sure orders arrive on time, at the right quality and cost.
What is the difference between operational and strategic buying?
Operational buyers place orders and chase deliveries; strategic buyers choose suppliers and run tenders for whole categories.
Which systems do buyer ads ask for?
SAP, with its purchasing part SAP MM, most often; Coupa and other purchasing tools in some firms; Excel everywhere.
Do I need a purchasing qualification?
Not always. A degree and results count most; CIPS in the UK and the German Fachwirt are named in some ads.
What should a buyer CV show first?
What you bought and the spend, then savings with their baseline, supplier changes you led, and the systems.
