What a demand planner does
A demand planner, also called a supply planner or S&OP planner in some companies, and in German a Bedarfsplaner or Absatzplaner, builds the forecast of what customers will buy, product by product and month by month. The planner starts from sales history and a statistical model, adds what sales, marketing and key customers know, and hands a single agreed number to the people who plan production, purchasing and stock. Then the planner checks the forecast against what really sold and improves it.
The role sits next to the other supply chain roles. The supply chain manager runs the whole chain and often chairs the planning meeting; the logistics manager moves and stores the goods. The category manager decides what is bought or sold, and the FP&A manager turns the volumes into the financial plan. Production planners, who schedule the factory, have a job of their own. The steps from junior demand planner to head of demand planning are in the career paths of this role.
The skills the ads ask for

One monthly planning cycle, step by step
- Clean: load last month's sales, correct one-off orders and stock-outs in the history.
- Forecast: run the statistical model and check the products where it moved most.
- Enrich: add what sales and marketing know: promotions, new products, lost or won customers.
- Agree: settle one number in the demand review and take the open questions to the S&OP meeting.
- Learn: measure accuracy and bias, find what went wrong and adjust the model or the inputs.
The hard part is rarely the model; it is getting people to share what they know early and to stop padding their numbers. A good demand planner is trusted because the forecast is honest, even when it brings bad news.
Your CV for a demand planner job
A demand planner's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a planning or supply chain manager who wants to see which products you forecast, with which tools, and how accuracy and stock changed. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the work as the ads do: "demand planning", "forecasting", "S&OP", "forecast accuracy", "inventory", and the planning system you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Name the range you planned in words that fit, such as a country's whole range or the spare parts business.
- Show results the business recognised: better accuracy, less bias, lower stock, fewer lost sales.
- Write a planning certificate that is not finished as in progress, naming the exam still ahead.
Prove each skill
A planning line proves itself with a range, a change in the process and a measured result.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| AccuracyChoose and tune statistical forecast models, and know when to trust them and when to override. | Improved forecast accuracy. | Rebuilt the statistical models of the spare parts range; forecast error fell for most product groups. |
| S&OPPrepare the demand side of the monthly S&OP cycle and bring the open questions to it. | Took part in S&OP. | Prepared the demand review for the monthly S&OP meeting and cut the open issues to a one-page list. |
| StockSet safety stocks and targets that balance service to customers against the cost of stock. | Managed inventory levels. | Reset safety stocks by product group with the supply team; stock fell while service held. |
| ToolWork in a planning system day to day: models, exceptions, scenarios and the master data behind them. | Used the planning system. | Moved our forecasts from spreadsheets to the new planning system and trained the sales planners. |
| Sales inputGet sales, marketing and finance to share what they know before it reaches the numbers. | Worked with sales. | Set up a monthly call with key account managers; promotion forecasts stopped surprising the plants. |
Keep confidential details out: no volumes, no customer names and no prices.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the demand planner jobs in our job search (demand and supply planners, S&OP planners and the German titles Bedarfsplaner and Absatzplaner), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; production planners and Disponenten are not counted here. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a demand planner do?
- Forecasts how much of each product customers will buy and agrees that number with sales, so the company makes and stocks the right amount.
- Is demand planning the same as supply planning?
- Close neighbours: demand planning forecasts what customers want, supply planning decides how to make or buy it. Many companies combine the two in one job.
- Do I need to be good at statistics?
- Enough to judge a model and its errors; most of the work is data, judgement and talking to sales.
- Is a certificate required?
- Some ads name one, though most do not; forecasts you improved count for more.
- What should a demand planner's CV show first?
- The range you planned, the tools you used and how accuracy, bias and stock changed.
