What a category manager does

A category manager, and in German often a Warengruppenmanager, is responsible for one category: in procurement, everything the company buys of one kind, such as packaging, logistics services or IT; in retail, a range the shop sells, such as dairy or garden furniture. The procurement category manager sets the buying strategy, chooses and manages suppliers and answers for cost and supply. The retail category manager decides the assortment, prices and promotions with suppliers and answers for sales and margin. Ads use the same title for both; this page covers both and says which side a point belongs to.

The role sits next to the other buying and planning roles. The buyer places and negotiates orders, often within the strategy a category manager sets; the supply chain manager makes sure goods flow; the demand planner forecasts how much will be needed. Selling to retailers is the work of the key account manager, a sales manager role. The steps from category analyst to category director are in the career paths of this role.

Competition and trading rules differ by place; each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

The competition and trading rules that reach category work are named side by side, each with its place: the EU UTP Directive limits certain practices of large buyers towards smaller suppliers in the agri-food chain; the German Bundeskartellamt enforces competition law in Germany; the US Robinson-Patman Act limits price discrimination between buyers; the UK GSCOP sets how the largest UK grocers treat suppliers; the Swiss COMCO and India's CCI oversee competition in their countries. The company's legal team says which apply.

One category strategy, step by step

  1. Understand: the spend or sales of the category, its suppliers, its users or shoppers, and its market.
  2. Choose: the aim for the next years, such as lower total cost, fewer suppliers or a fresher range.
  3. Plan: the actions: tenders, renegotiations, new specifications, range changes, promotions.
  4. Execute: with the buyers, the users and the suppliers, contract by contract or range by range.
  5. Track: savings or sales, supplier results and risks, and adjust the plan each year.

The hard part is rarely the negotiation; it is getting the users of a category to change what they ask for, or a store team to stick to the plan. A good category manager is trusted because the business sees the gains in its own figures.

Your CV for a category manager job

A category manager's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a head of procurement or of a retail range who wants to see which categories you ran, their size in words that fit, and what changed. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Write the work as the ads do: "category management", "strategic sourcing", "spend analysis", "supplier management", "negotiation", or for retail "assortment", "pricing" and "promotions". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the categories and say whether you bought them or sold them.
  • Show results finance recognised: savings booked, margin gained, supply secured, suppliers reduced.
  • A procurement qualification still under way goes on the CV as in progress, with the module you take next.

Prove each skill

A category line proves itself with a category, a decision and a result in the company's figures.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the category manager jobs in our job search (category managers in procurement and retail, category management roles and the German title Warengruppenmanager), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; buyer titles are counted on the buyer's page. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a category manager do?
Owns a category: in procurement how it is bought and from whom, in retail what is sold and at what price.
Is a category manager the same as a buyer?
Close, but wider: the buyer places and negotiates orders, the category manager sets the strategy for the whole category over years.
Do I need a degree in business?
Many have one, but a record of categories that improved counts for more than the subject.
Is a certificate required?
Some ads name one, though most do not; results in your categories count for more.
What should a category manager's CV show first?
The categories you ran, whether you bought or sold them, and what changed in cost or margin.
