What a supply chain manager does

A supply chain manager runs the flow of goods through a company: what to buy and when, how much stock to hold and where, how goods move to customers, and what to do when a supplier, a port or a forecast fails. The heart of the job is a monthly planning cycle that brings sales, production, purchasing and finance to one plan, and the daily work of keeping that plan true.

The role sits between the planners and the leaders of the business. It is measured on service to customers, the cost of the flow and the money tied up in stock. The steps from supply chain planner to chief supply chain officer are in the career paths of this role.

Forced labour rules: the US Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, the UFLPA, lets US customs hold imports linked to forced labour in one region of China unless the importer shows the goods are free of it, so US supply chain teams trace materials back to their source.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment, in manufacturing, retail, distribution and healthcare supply chains.

Tax and transport: in India, goods moving between states travel under the GST system, with an electronic way bill, the e-way bill, for most consignments in India, so supply chain teams plan warehouses and routes with tax rules in mind.

Planning tools and the due diligence rules

Most supply chains are planned in the ERP, such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics, and many add a planning tool for forecasts and scenarios, such as SAP IBP, Kinaxis, o9 or Blue Yonder. They are named side by side because ads name them side by side; the method of planning carries from one to the next, and interviews test the method.

Rules on human rights and the environment now reach into supply chains. The German LkSG and the EU's CSDDD ask large companies to find and act on risks among their suppliers; the US UFLPA and the UK Modern Slavery Act deal with forced labour; the Swiss Code of Obligations covers conflict minerals and child labour. Each country's section says more. This is a summary and not legal advice; ask your legal or compliance team which rules apply to your company today.

Your CV for a supply chain manager job

A supply chain CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of supply chain who wants to see the size of the flow you managed and what moved because of you. Give both the keywords and the figures.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the processes and tools as the ad does: "S&OP", "demand planning", "inventory management", "SAP", "Incoterms". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Give the scope: products, sites, countries, the value of stock or spend you were responsible for, where you are allowed to say it.
  • Write a training you are still doing, such as a supply chain certification or a Six Sigma belt, as "in progress" with the planned date.
  • Show the trade-off you managed: service up while stock went down is the line every reader looks for.

Prove each skill

A supply chain line proves itself with a measure that moved: service level, forecast accuracy, stock, lead time, freight cost, and over what period.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the supply chain manager jobs in our job search (supply chain manager and the German titles Supply Chain Manager and Lieferkette), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a supply chain manager do?
Plans and steers the flow of goods from suppliers to customers: forecasts, stock, purchasing plans, transport and warehouses, balancing service, cost and the money tied up in stock.
What is the difference between supply chain and logistics?
Logistics moves and stores goods; supply chain management also plans what to make, buy and hold, and brings sales, production and purchasing to one plan.
Which tools does a supply chain manager use?
An ERP such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics, often a planning tool such as Kinaxis or o9, and Excel and dashboards for analysis.
Do supply chain laws affect the job?
Yes: due diligence and forced labour rules differ by country and are named in each country's section. This is not legal advice.
What should a supply chain manager's CV show first?
The scope you managed, the planning processes you ran, and measures that moved, such as service, stock, forecast accuracy and freight cost.
