What a contract manager does
A contract manager makes sure that what a company agrees in writing is clear, approved, signed and then actually kept. The work follows the contract lifecycle: a request from the business, a draft from a template, negotiation with the other side, internal approval, signature, and then the years of obligations, changes, invoices, claims and renewals until the contract ends.
The job sits between two others. The lawyer advises on the law and drafts the difficult clauses; the contract manager runs the process and the many contracts that follow standard positions, and knows when a question must go to a lawyer. On the buying side the buyer chooses suppliers and prices and the supply chain manager plans the flow of goods; the contract manager turns what they agreed into terms that hold. German ads say Vertragsmanager. The steps from contract administrator to commercial director are in the career paths of this role.
Contract law and the rules for electronic signatures differ by place, and each country's section names its own. This page describes the job and is not legal advice; a contract manager is not a lawyer unless qualified as one.

A contract, from request to renewal
- Intake: the business asks for a contract and answers a few questions: who, what, value, dates and risks.
- Draft: the right template, with the company's standard positions and the fall-backs allowed in the playbook, the guide that says what may be changed and by whom.
- Negotiation: the other side's changes, shown as redlines, answered clause by clause; anything outside the playbook goes to legal or the budget owner.
- Approval and signature: the agreed approvers, then signature, often electronic, and the contract stored with its key dates.
- After signature: obligations tracked, changes agreed in writing, claims handled, and the renewal or notice decided in time.
Around single contracts come the steady tasks: templates and playbooks kept current, the contract repository kept complete, training for the business, and reports on renewals, risks and claims. A good contract manager is trusted by the business for speed and by legal for care.
Your CV for a contract manager job
A contract manager's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of contract management who wants to see which contracts you ran, what you negotiated and what you kept from going wrong. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Name the work as the ad does: "contract management", "contract lifecycle", "negotiation", "supplier contracts", "customer contracts", and the tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say which contracts: buying or selling, services, IT, goods or construction, and the countries.
- Give your results the way your company measured them, such as time to signature or claims recovered, without confidential figures.
- Name a certificate in progress, such as one from WorldCC, as in progress with the month you expect to finish.
Prove each skill
A contract line proves itself with a process that got faster or a risk that did not happen: contracts signed sooner, renewals caught in time, a claim recovered.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Contract lifecycleRun a contract from the first request to renewal or end: drafts, approvals, signature, obligations and changes. | Managed contracts. | Ran some two hundred supplier contracts from intake to renewal; no contract renewed without a decision. |
| NegotiationPrepare positions and fall-backs, trade terms calmly and keep the relationship working. | Negotiated contract terms. | Negotiated liability and service levels for an outsourcing deal within the playbook, with legal only on two clauses. |
| CLM toolKeep templates, approvals, signatures and dates in a contract lifecycle tool and keep its data clean. | Used contract software. | Moved the contract archive into a contract lifecycle tool with key dates for every contract. |
| RiskSpot the risks in a contract early, rate them and agree who carries each. | Reviewed contract risks. | Built a short risk checklist for intake; high-risk requests now reach legal on the first day. |
| Supplier claimsWork with buyers on supplier contracts: tenders, prices, service levels and exit terms. | Handled supplier issues. | Recovered service credits from a supplier that missed its service levels for a quarter. |
Keep confidential terms out: no prices, no names of counterparties without permission.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the contract manager jobs in our job search (contract managers and the German titles Vertragsmanager and Referent Vertragsmanagement), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; lawyer and buyer jobs are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
