What an FP&A manager does

FP&A stands for financial planning and analysis. An FP&A manager looks forward: what the business will sell, spend and earn next month and next year, and what would change if prices, volumes or costs moved. The work runs in a cycle: the yearly budget, forecasts that update it, the monthly comparison of actual results with the plan, and the analysis that tells leaders what to do about the difference.

The role sits between three others. The financial analyst builds much of the analysis and is often the step before this one; the controller closes the books and reports the actual figures the plan is compared against; the treasury manager turns the forecast into cash and funding. In German-speaking countries much of this work is called Controlling, the German word for management accounting and planning. The steps from FP&A analyst to VP of finance are in the career paths of this role.

Planning is the same craft everywhere, but accounting rules and titles differ by country, and each country's section names its own. Accounting qualifications are named there neutrally; many FP&A managers have none and come up through analysis.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

The planning cycle, step by step

  1. Budget: set targets with leadership, collect plans from each unit, challenge them and agree one budget for the year.
  2. Forecast: update the year's outlook every month or quarter, often as a rolling forecast that always looks a set number of months ahead.
  3. Actuals: compare the closed month with budget and forecast, with the controller's figures.
  4. Analysis: explain the main differences by driver, such as price, volume, mix and cost, and say what they mean for the rest of the year.
  5. Decisions: take scenarios, investment cases and the board pack to leaders, and follow the actions agreed.

Around the cycle come the projects: a new planning tool, a model for a new business, a cost programme or a price change to evaluate. A good FP&A manager is trusted by leadership for a realistic outlook and by the business for numbers that help them run it.

Your CV for an FP&A manager job

An FP&A manager's CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a director of FP&A who wants to see which plans you ran, which decisions your numbers supported and how accurate your forecasts were. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as the ad does: "budgeting", "forecasting", "variance analysis", "financial modelling", "business partnering", and the tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say what you planned for: a company, a division, a sales region or a cost area, and its size in words such as "a division of a listed group".
  • Show results as your company measured them: forecast accuracy, a shorter budget cycle, a decision your analysis changed.
  • Name an accounting qualification in progress, such as CIMA or ACCA in the UK, as in progress with the month you expect to finish.

Prove each skill

A planning line proves itself with a decision or a better process: a forecast that held, a cost programme you sized, a budget delivered faster than before.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the FP&A manager jobs in our job search (FP&A managers and analysts, financial planning and analysis, and the German titles FP&A Manager and Leiter Finanzplanung), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; financial analyst and controller jobs are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does an FP&A manager do?
Runs the budget and the forecasts, compares actual results with the plan, explains the differences and supports leaders' decisions with scenarios and models.
Is FP&A the same as controlling?
They overlap. FP&A looks forward at plans and forecasts; controlling in the English sense closes the books and reports the actual figures. In German-speaking countries one Controlling team often does both.
Do I need an accounting qualification?
Not always. Many FP&A managers come up through financial analysis; some ads ask for one, many accept experience.
Which tools should I know?
Excel well, the planning tool of the company you join, and a dashboard tool; the method matters more than the product.
What should an FP&A manager's CV show first?
The plans you ran, the decisions your analysis supported and how accurate your forecasts were.
